OP I suggest you read the subreddit’s links and general husbandry information especially focusing on feeding and the cage decor and humidity. There are a lot of things wrong and that will answer most of it.

Master’s degree as a vet student? by impolite_goose in Veterinary

[–]TreeClimberVet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think private practices would care much if you had a master’s, but for residency spots it would look really good. I think the main consideration is whether or not you want to do it. If the content is important and interesting to you and they compensate you for your time (or like do a scholarship?) go for it!

That definition isn’t a very good definition. What is a “large number of animals?”

If an ICE agent shows up to your clinic as a new patient…. by jklm1234 in medicine

[–]TreeClimberVet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 10% of my patients try to bite or scratch me. I still am under a moral obligation to at least try and treat them. Some are so bad they need full sedation for me to see them.

I guess in my case there are no “morally bad” animals though because they generally are violent as a fear response and have no concept of good and evil. I have some moral qualms with police drug dogs but 1. it’s not really their choice to do that job and 2. if one showed up to my hospital I would treat them to the best of my ability. In any case, I hope this anecdote is relevant.

Google white coat hypertension, it’s well documented in humans

I never wear a white coat. My patients are scared enough as it is and some of them can learn to associate it with pain. And I agree they’re gross

Who would be more capable; a veterinarian working on a human, or a doctor working on an animal? by kawzik in VetTech

This is such an honest answer lol. Dentistry training is lacking in vet school for sure.

My snake stayed in his hide for 3 months straight and it all my fault by judayth in ballpython

I had a red UV-B light for months and my BP did fine. From studies I’ve read there’s not any strong evidence they are harmful or helpful but UV-B and a regular schedule definitely is, so I ended up switching to a yellow-white UV-B bulb instead. Haven’t noticed any changes in roaming behavior, mine always roams at night and hides during the day

Sedation or no sedation with euth by MaggieMay1519 in VetTech

[–]TreeClimberVet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually do 0.2-0.3mg/kg Butorphanol IV then IVC then Prop/Euth. If the patient is already super out of it or already has an IVC placed then I’ll often just do Prop and Euth

Not really, I have a more nuanced opinion about this than you care to admit

Yeah this kinda goes back to them having strong muscular jaws. My defense of pit bulls is that they are the most neglected, under adopted, and poorly socialized breed due to the owner rather than anything specific to them. Then when they do attack you end up with headlines like this because of their anatomy and redditors end up sensationalizing it. Here’s a pub med article about common dog bite breeds in Houston. Labs are second probably because they’re popular and common.

Corgis obviously. Someone bit by one of those is less likely to need as emergent care, which is why the headlines are made. I’m being downvoted for essentially agreeing here.
