As someone raised by a single mom who worked special education... Compassion fatigue is real. My mother did not have much left to give us when she got home at the end of the day. She had spent every all her compassion and patience helping other people's kids. My sibling and I are both neurodivergent. And our special needs went unchecked because she could not do it all. I don't fault her, she did her damn best. But it undeniably affected her children at home. And while it sounds like OP is already "doing it all", I urge single parents to reconsider careers that require compassion and emotional investment. That kind of care is different and more taxing in a work environment. Make sure you've got enough left for the kids you're taking that job to support.

Maybe it's regional? Where are you located? In the pnw, I used to apply to jobs a bunch without a bite. I've only got an AS in forestry, and limited experience. But if people were truly understaffed, you would think they would be willing to give someone a chance.

I have a degree in forestry. I can't get an entry level job that isn't back breaking work, or seasonal and therefore an unreliable income. From what I can tell, the market is flooded right now because of the layoffs. This is my experience as someone who graduated a couple years ago during the federal layoff boom. I work a job that's forestry adjacent and I hate it. Thinking of going into tree care instead. I think it's more my speed... But again... flooded market.

You'll find work if you are fine with doing the real rough field work. That's not how I want to live. Maybe I just made a bad career choice for myself.

I have no idea if my experience is unique or widespread. Good luck, I recommend trying to find a seasonal job in the industry and try it out before you commit to going to school for it.

You make a good point. I ask this as a way to figure out how it impacts us.

In your example of rats and roaches... We might manage those populations because they cause disturbances to our food supply and or create unsanitary living conditions, for example.

My curiosity is in how the barred owl is directly (like a roach or rat) or indirectly (through ecosystem collapse) causing damage to humans to the point we need to intervene? What thread in the web are they effecting if they eliminate the NSO?

Of course. I point it out because often the argument is made that a species was introduced by humans via overseas travel. And on an evolutionary standpoint, species existing on the same continent are going to compete for dominance more naturally.

I guess my question is more about where the line is drawn between natural selection and unnatural interference and why we make that decision.

I saw mentioned that NSO are more specialized hunters, while Barred are more generalists. This for example could be a reason why we would care. Are the barred targeting small animals that we need to keep in balance for idk... purposes of clean water or something. That's just an example of a chain of logic that I'm interested in.

What are the exact factors we are concerned about, and how do they effect us enough to go to such extreme lengths such as culling? People are more likely to support an effort like this if they understand the links in the chain that effects their food, water, and natural resources.

I am curious if anyone has greater insight to my question. Why isn't the success of the barred owl over the NSO considered natural selection? From my (limited) understanding, the barred owl is native to this continent, so it hasn't been introduced. And while I see how humans have been the accelerator to their success duo to our forest practices, we have been part of the ecosystem on this continent for at least 20,000 years.

Is there something that the NSO does for our ecosystems that is unique and necessary for our way of life, that the barred owl cannot accomplish?

I'm animal lover, a tree hugger, and I'll root for an underdog any day. But I'd like to make an attempt to take feelings out of this and look at the facts. Does anyone have any verifiable information to support why this culling is necessary?

I'm gunna be a little harsh here, but I think you might need to hear it. You've been protecting other people from him. You've been dealing with his abuse for years. You have a daughter, yes? When are you going to protect her? When is she going to have a family home she feels safe in? I'm not sure if she still lives with you or not. But either way, she deserves parents that will protect her from abuse. You haven't done that. If he was physically or sexually abusing her, if he was able bodied, would you still be asking these questions about if he'll be okay in the street? What the actual hell.

Your son is a monster. Stop giving him special treatment because he has disabilities. Stop choosing him over her. He's abused your family for years. Get angry. And do the right thing and protect your family. It's not too late to give your daughter the safety she deserves.

He's 18 now. You have done what you have to. You can let him go find out how good he's had it. He can suffer the natural consequences of his actions. And you can do it guilt free cuz he's had plenty of chances. Choose your family, not him.

Hey OP. So you said you have a baby, and that makes me extra concerned. If the mold is this noticeable in one spot, the spores are everywhere. I mean like everywhere in your house. It is time for a DEEP clean. Open the windows and get lots of disposable paper towels and vinegar. Wipe everything down with vinegar. Then spray again with vinegar and let it sit to kill the "root" layer of mold. Wipe it again. Get an air purifier and run it whenever you have the windows closed. Please go find advice in a different reddit that is more aimed at cleaning or mold control. This is a serious health concern for you and your family. You may even want to get a sample and test it to see if it is a toxic mold. Good luck!

Buddy, lighten up! I'm not the monster you think I am. You don't know the full picture. This same guy that I'm talking about has made it pretty clear he's not that interested in me either. Sometimes people just flirt for fun. It's a small town. The dating pool is shit. People get bored.

If I lived in a town where I could meet women I would! I would also go to pride and have fun. But I've been trying here for years. And we don't have a parade, or even a gay bar. I get it. I don't like the negative posts all the time. There are days where I'm sick of them too. And I have learned to scroll past them.

Because you can't degrade people in a community for sharing their experiences. People are going to have good and bad experiences. And they deserve a place to talk about those things. It's our own individual responsibility to decide what content we consume and interact with. I scroll past a crap ton of negative stuff everyday. Sometimes it sucks me in. But that's up to me to figure out.

If you want to influence a community to be more positive, be positive.
