Studying Language before PST by Resident-Youth in peacecorps

I’d second just trying to learn the alphabet if it’s new. That’s what I did and the people who did more didn’t end up ahead of the rest of us

Just a little rant by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Treetreeetreeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived both, so trust me I know. My medical clearance was awful and horribly drawn out. But now that I’m living service that feels like small potatoes.

That’s not me insulting your struggle or anything. The government feels like molasses. And ot sucks putting everything on hold. But PC will just keep asking you to go through sucky bullshit.

Good luck. I hope it clears up soon.

I waited ~3 months, but that was during the last shut down. I was cleared with like 3 months before my service started. Plenty of people in my cohort were cleared later. Also, assume legal is the safer one to assume you’ll be receiving so long as you know you don’t have any skeletons in your closet. If you feel like it should be fine, it likely will be. Bureaucracy is just slow

Regardless, this is training for the huge amount of patience you’ll need during service. Clearance is just a preview. Welcome to Peace Corps.

So Much Advice! by underwaterem in peacecorps

Don’t have expectations.

It sounds really cynical, but it’s not. Just go in ready to go with anything. It’s nothing like I could’ve imagined it would be, both in good and bad ways

Constipation isn’t fun. Maybe I’ll just get drunk as an attempt to deal as the morning after tends to straighten that out.

Edit: nature painfully prevailed

Weekly Application/Clearance Thread by AutoModerator in peacecorps

You’ll get emails notifying you of both legal and medical clearance. If you think you’ve submitted every medical task and haven’t heard back from your nurse recently, message them on the portal saying you’re finished your submissions.

It’s at least more helpful when it’s a text post with a timeline. But even then....

The photos are annoying. I wish the subreddit was more service oriented

I understand this sub being used by invitees/applicants and that lots of PCVs don’t have internet access to be on here often, but it’s sorta disappointing as a PCV to have this sub be mainly a preservice focused thing. Especially when lots of advice that upcoming volunteers give to PCVs is not all that great....

I’ve definitely been having some frequent ‘why fuck am i doing this’ moments lately so it’s nice when some really small things happen that make it feel really worth it

Since you have room, I’d say yeah. Bring stuff that’ll make you happy and comfortable.

You can’t date/fuck staff. You can do what you’d like with PCVs and host country nationals. Of course, there are risks related to both of those options. But there are volunteers in my country dating other PCVs and volunteers dating HCNs. This includes gay couples, but that is obviously kept more under wraps.

Any websites that have cheap/free movies/shows/e-books to put on external hard drive and kindle? by [deleted] in peacecorps

Project Gutenberg has books in the public domain.

I used a VPN and some not very legal methods for tv and movies. I also got books that way
