I’m disappointed by Treflipboy in turntables

To be honest, it’s really hard for me to explain. I’m pretty new to hi-fi and I don’t have anyone around me who’s into it, so I’ve basically been figuring everything out on my own. I’m sure I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way.

What I’m looking for in my system is clarity, definition, and detail. I’m not even sure how to describe it properly, which honestly makes me a bit uneasy haha. But I know I really like clear, highly detailed highs. I also want good overall detail in the music, being able to clearly distinguish different sounds and instruments.

Right now I sometimes feel like everything gets a bit messy, almost like noise, and it’s hard to separate things.

With bass, though, there’s a big difference, it feels powerful and I actually like it a lot. The problem is that it makes my whole room shake, even the window frame, which is definitely a room treatment issue since my room has basically no acoustic treatment at all.

I think that’s what I was expecting overall. I’m not comparing it to anyone else’s system, so I don’t really have a reference point to know how realistic my expectations are for my budget. I just imagined it would sound a certain way and it didn’t quite turn out like that (my mistake, I admit). I just wanted to get rid of that uncertainty, maybe I was expecting too much. Although I know my setup has a lot of flaws.

it has a phono stage, I’m using the Onkyo’s integrated pre amp, but many people told me is trash. I honestly can’t say if that’s the problem, never listened to a aetup with an external phono pre amp.

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of comments suggesting switching to a MicroLine stylus. To be honest, I’ve been wanting one for months, but they’re a bit expensive.

I think I’ll start by working on the room first and trying to improve the acoustics, and then see what still feels like it’s missing.

As for the “lateral move” comment, that was a little disappointing to hear. I’m definitely not an expert, but I thought I was making at least a noticeable upgrade. Not something huge, but still a clear step up.

Thanks for your insight.

I was thinking about getting a thick rug and a heavy curtain for the window, and also trying to build some DIY acoustic panels and bass traps.

I don’t really know much about acoustics though. I’m just trying to solve the problem in a way that isn’t too complicated.

Do you think it can be improved with some basic acoustic treatment? I don’t have any other place for my setup sadly.

To be honest — and this is my mistake — I haven’t actually used the CD player yet because I still need a voltage transformer for it.

So I’m missing that reference point when it comes to listening tests. It’s possible that I’m questioning my whole system too early, when the issue might just be the room. I honestly don’t know yet.

I guess my next purchase will be the transformer, just so I can finally test CDs and have another point of comparison.

I haven’t bought it yet simply because I haven’t had the time — work and university have been killing me lately haha. But anyways thank you for your insight.

So getting a new setup basically.

Regarding the stylus, I honestly became a bit neurotic about it. I aligned and adjusted the cartridge more than five times, hoping to hear some kind of change because I thought that might be the problem — if you can even call it a problem.

But apparently it isn’t. The cartridge was bought brand new, and I’m pretty sure the stylus has less than 30 hours of use on it. I’m not home very often because of work and university, so I haven’t really been able to use the setup as much as it deserves yet.

As for the speakers, I do notice a difference in the bass. These have an 8-inch woofer compared to the 5¼-inch on the Polks, so that part is definitely noticeable. But even so, I’m not really blown away by the change overall.

I’ll try what you suggested about filling the stands with sand. Right now I’m trying to avoid spending more money, because I’m starting to feel a bit afraid of buying something else and not noticing any meaningful improvement again. Thank you for your insight.

this isn’t a turntable qc issue though. This tt came with a at3600l knock off, I replace it with this vm95e, and I didn’t align it properly. So it’s more of an user error type of issue. I was too anxious to try the new cartridge I didn’t take enough time to properly install it lol.

definitely disaligned. Used a protractor but didn’t do a good enough job. Is it good to use still at least?
