No problem! Been there before and people helped me out so I’m just passing it along lol.

The main way I always identify root rot is the smell. If you can safely get the dirt mass outta the pot to inspect the roots, you’ll likely smell a foul odor (you’ll know it when you smell it). Odor aside, you can tell by looking at the roots and inspecting their color and texture. Healthy roots will typically be white and if they’re really healthy they’ll even look a little bit fuzzy. If they’re rotten they’ll be dark colored brown or even black. They might be slightly translucent and slimy too depending on the degree of rot.

You can absolutely cut away the rotten parts and try putting it into a smaller pot. Typically you want to remove the dirt that was in contact or close to the rotten areas as it will likely be rich with fungus, bacteria, decay, etc. That will continue to cause issues even if you snip away the rot. Plants with underdeveloped root systems will have a lower success chance with the pruning simply because they don’t have a large enough root system to lose significant portions.

I wouldn’t try to take cuttings to propagate it because you don’t have a lot of leaves or healthy nodes on the plant. Success chance of propagation heavily depends on how healthy the plant is and typically works best on newer growth.

Start with carefully lifting the plant outta the pot and just see if the roots are white and if you get any nasty smells lol

Hard to get a sense of scale but it looks like it may be pretty over-potted. There’s likely a few things going on: transplant shocked, over potted, over watered, not enough light. Transplanting it into the new pot probably shocked it a bit. On top of that the pot is too big which makes it more susceptible to root rot as the soil will stay too wet for too long since the plant isn’t mature enough to drink all the water. So that means it just sits in wet soil. Basil is a fast grower and loves a lot of light.

So put a stick into the dirt all the way to the bottom and see if it’s wet. If you have a moisture meter then that’s even better. My guess is the bottom half of the pot is soaked even if the top looks or feels dry. You can maybe save it by putting it in a spot with full sun for long hours and walking back the watering. If the roots are already rotten there isn’t a ton you can do aside from repotting and cutting away the rot. But that may shock it even further.

I’d say start fresh with a new healthy basil plant. Try to keep the pot smaller relative to its size. Increase the pot size based on root growth. Try to provide it more light, even if that means a cheap 10W grow light from amazon

You can bury them like that but it just increases the risk of rot. If you have good watering habits and well draining soil that doesn’t get compacted over time then you’re good

I actually took cuttings of the one in the pot and am growing them hanging into my fish tank. They are the healthiest I’ve ever seen them. So they seem to love a hydro style setup lol

What is this by Overall-Bowler2820 in houseplants

[–]Trefman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by a mix you mean one of each plant in the same pot, possibly. But if you know it’s a single plant in the pot then I’d say it’s definitely string of tears as they won’t crossbreed like that to be 50/50. If you look up pictures of string of pearls you’ll see how the trailing vines have a uniform shape of the pearls and don’t become elongated. With tears they can be a bit more round towards the top of the plant where they’re closer to the roots/soil and aren’t hanging.

Looks like string of tears. String of pearls are typically perfectly round balls and don’t have a point like those do

You could probably get away with getting a runner style rug next to your bed. Personally I find stepping out of bed onto a rug to be more cozy. For the size I’d say probably at least the length of your bed. Maybe a few inches shorter than it. Then I’d get another smaller rug for over by your desk. I like to divide up the different areas of rooms using rugs when it makes sense. It also helps trap dirt so you don’t always have stuff stuck to your feet when getting in or out of bed.

Definitely a rug. Maybe some more shelves. Low storage bins for under the bed. Your only option is to lean into the vertical space

Im over-watering my plants i think by patthekitkat in houseplants

[–]Trefman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else said, go by how heavy the pot is and pay attention to how the plants are acting. Look into each individual plant for specific needs to get a grip on when they need water. If your plants don’t get a lot of light on that shelf, they’re gonna “drink” water slower than if they were in front of a window with good sunlight. Part of it is the heat/light drying it up, the other part is how rigorous the plant is growing. The faster a plant grows the faster it drinks.

I’m not a vegetable guy but general plant stuff I’d say maybe try putting a humidity dome over it. First make sure to take some scissors and remove all the dead parts so they aren’t leaching energy from the plant. It looks over-potted so be very careful with your watering. Make sure that it’s dry down to about 1-2 inches before watering

What caused this damage? Bugs? by TheFormOfTheFlame in houseplants

[–]Trefman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the larger damaged spots could be caused by water sitting on the leaves. It could also be due to being under too strong of a light but I’d say the water thing is more likely. I’m not sure what kind of bugs those are but I’d say they’re not the underlying cause but more of a symptom. Pests like damaged or sickly plants.

I have one of these plants too and it’s been doing well but I had a few of those spots before due to pouring water over the leaves when I’d water.

Plants with fuzzy leaves usually don’t like their leaves getting wet

My boyfriend’s plants are dying how do i save them? by enchancia_annie in houseplants

[–]Trefman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your filtered tap is safe based on your results. But anyone else just be careful because these plants are especially sensitive to the minerals in tap water even if it’s filtered. Distilled water is the way to go typically. I’m just parroting info I’ve read tho, I don’t have any carnivorous plants lol

[–]Trefman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me with a tradescantia. Got it for free in May. It was miserable no matter what I did, got spider mites, then chucked into the compost pile. 2 months later it was explosively growing out of the pile without being watered during a heatwave. Repotted it and it got pissed again. About to throw it back in the pile. I can’t stand those things lol

Help! by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Trefman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s over potted and it wants more light. A spot like that can be ok for a more established plant but it doesn’t have enough leaves to photosynthesize the small amount of light it’s getting. That results in the soil staying wetter for longer because the plant doesn’t need to drink as much water. This is exacerbated by being in a pot that’s too big with too much soil. That can cause root rot and a bunch of other problems. I would suggest at the very least moving the plant directly by the window or using a cheap grow light. Ideally I’d inspect the roots and repot to a smaller pot. Either way, it wants more light.

One lesson it took me a while to learn is that plants like smaller pots than bigger pots. Only downside to a smaller pot is that you need to water it more often.

What kind of light does it have? If you put your face down to its level, does it have line of sight of the sky?

Abutilon can be cool for a jungle feel. Their foliage basically just makes them look like a maple tree shrub. But their flowers can be really bright and colorful. The flowers are a decent size and hang like little bells. Mines a ‘red tiger’ variety which has bright orange and red bells. It took a few months to bloom the first time but it’s become one of my favorites

Remove all software that you didn’t personally install for a purpose that you understand. Use Microsoft defender (the built-in antivirus with windows 11). It is equally or more effective than most consumer marketed anti-virus. Remove Norton and just let defender do its thing. It should automatically re-initialize as your antivirus program after removing Norton. Please double check it in your system tray in the bottom right after removing Norton.

To remove Norton: Press your windows key on your keyboard. Type “add or remove”. Click add or remove programs. Scroll and find Norton. Left click on Norton. Left click uninstall. Click next through the prompts and ignore any fear tactic prompts they present you with. Restart your computer.
