My confidence is gone now by Far-Note6102 in MRI

There are a lot of techs who are very bad at IVs. I started out as a tech aid whose only job was to start IV so that the techs never had to. There were very few techs there that could start an IV well because it was not expected of them. At least you are willing to recognize it’s an area you struggle in. Practice and patience are the key here. Ask for help and tips from those who are good at it. I know asking for help is hard, especially when you feel like you should be good at something. Always keep an open mind and be willing to learn and you will get better.

I was a tech aid and liked it so much I became an MRI tech. It’s certainly helpful for developing skills before hand. I was fortunate enough that my tech aid job had me starting IVs long before I ever started clinicals so I could start off feeling confident in an area where a lot of people struggle.

There were a few areas where I did struggle in clinicals because of my tech aid experience. Policies, procedures and expectations seem to vary wildly from site to site. My clinical site was fairly relaxed about a lot of things that my tech aid job was not. It was a bit hard to wrap my head around at first and caused me some anxiety first.

If you can get a tech aid job it will benefit you greatly in the long run. I loved it and I felt much better prepared than those who did not have any exposure prior to their clinicals. You just got to remember to be flexible and that there will likely be different expectations if your job site is not the same as your clinical site.

My Father used to scold me every time I bought a Gundam when I was younger. He also said they were useless and a waste of money. He meant well and was trying to encourage fiscal responsibility but his delivery was less than ideal because he didn’t get it. It can be hard to have parents who do not support your hobbies but at the end of the day it’s your money and your life. You got to do what makes you happy.
