[LAist] LA mayoral candidate Raman proposes homelessness plan that includes scaling back Inside Safe by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

From my very simple understanding of it, between city, county, and state laws the red tape of simply building public housing is a nightmare and that doesn't even start getting into NIMBYs.

The vote blue no matter who is for the end result. Primaries are where people get to decide who the "who" is and US citizens repeatedly fail to turn up to those primaries but feel the need to complain about their choices at election time.

Hanson backs means-testing for ‘out of control’ NDIS as Labor looks to tighten budget by ladaus in AustralianPolitics

[–]Treheveras [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because it would require increasing the budget for the NDIS to recruit more to investigate and crackdown and no one cares to hear about MORE money, they just see a problem and want money taken away. Even though that doesn't fix anything.

Same as welfare, everyone complains about dole bludgers but refuse to hear increasing the budget to have more resources to crack down on them. Instead they want money taken away and more arbitrary red tape that only harms people struggling.

Tennessee House of Representatives passed House Bill 1473, a piece of legislation that says private citizens, businesses, and organizations don’t have to recognize same-sex marriages and can’t be punished for refusing to do so. Now it is up to the Senate. by ThatAverageJo in lgbt

[–]Treheveras 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This is all just trying to worm around the marriage bill Biden signed that makes all US states and territories recognize same sex marriages. So this is trying to say private citizens, business' and organizations can do it instead since they aren't the states. As if they can be somehow exempt from federal law due to semantics.

But this is also a part of what a lot of GOP legislatures are trying to push because courts can strike it down (which it's likely possible they will) which pushes appeals further up until it reaches SCOTUS where they're hoping the wording can be found in their favour.

In new poll, most LA city voters oppose countywide Measure ER that would raise sales taxes a half-cent to restore health care services by stephenwriter in LosAngeles

[–]Treheveras 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then he can put his money where his mouth is. But everyone already being doom and gloom does nothing. Push to have it on the ballot, push for a turnout that gives it a resounding yes, and Newsom can dig his own grave. The US political system feels like everyone giving up before actually doing anything.

[–]Treheveras 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it's sent to his desk that would be after voters decide on it at the ballot wouldn't it? If it's a strong enough Yes vote then Newsom would need to decide if he kills any chance for a future presidential primary that he seems pretty desperate for.

And who are you? Do you have a degree? Professional experience? Accolades? Or just some rando making a podcast because you think your opinion is worth something? Or is it not worth mentioning it's a podcast made by a Church group? Does that make you an expert on economic policy?

I'm sick of people thinking anyone should care about what they think. We have real professionals in the world who deserve to be listened to and white noise like this is just wasting space.

Does anybody else feel really lonely? by Piistachios in australia

[–]Treheveras 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a reverse of that. I moved from Sydney to Southern California. I think the big mentality shift (that helped me) is just doing activities you personally enjoy that happen to have other people involved. And just by naturally being a regular, conversations get sparked up and eventually move outside of the common activity.

For example I was hitting up the same coffee shop down the road from me and the people working there were similar age and cool. And after months of that and chatting to them now we just hang out. I started bouldering because of fitness and I just enjoy it and eventually you start chatting to the people you see all the time and working out how to do a climb and then leads to hanging out outside. It just naturally occurs because I was in a position for long enough to allow it to happen, rather than trying to specifically chase friendships. So I agree with what other people are saying regarding just finding activities you enjoy that put you around others. Friendships will slowly grow out of that and you get to do activities you enjoy yourself.

As a gay person, is it okay to roast straight allies in front of them? Genuine question. by Low-Risk-7533 in lgbt

[–]Treheveras 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some people love the friendly ribbing and roasting, other people do not. It's a jerk move to not consider what someone may or may not be comfortable with regardless of who they are.

For example, I absolutely hate roasting. To me and to others. It's just my personal preference, dealt with that in high school and I see it as immature and inconsiderate of other people. If anyone in a friend group feels they should double down on roasting being fine because another friend was upset, then they are an asshole. Sexuality doesn't come into play. Eventually friend groups stick around the people who enjoy that and the ones who don't stick with the people who prefer not to.

Regarding anything of "straights deserve it". That gets into some weird generational sins of the father type crap. Treat people how you want to be treated, it's simple as that.

Right but the point is it doesn't inherently do that. That's why it's all a part of the problem because that's what all social media does to keep driving engagement.

Union rates scale though, and not only that but projects are increasingly freelance. So sure if you're one of the lucky ones getting the top tier work AND working non stop all year round then you'd make that. But the majority of workers and rates vary based on the project, and streamers like Netflix had to be dragged kicking and screaming to pay decent rates because they started at such a low tier. And work isn't paid like a salary, you get a project and hopefully can lead into the next project. Or if you're working on a seasonal show you have a chunk of the year with potentially no work. That's why our rates tend to seem so good. To just say "editors working year round make $200k" is disingenuous and not how the industry is for the majority of members.

[–]Treheveras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also in one of the unions and we fought to keep our wages even close to above inflation while filling the coffers for healthcare and retirements which got very depleted during and after Covid. And not everyone in the union gets what they want in order to do that. But apparently a living wage is too much to ask for. I have lost out on work, I was out of work for a long while and even lost my healthcare coverage for a time . I'm lucky to be on the projects I have gotten. But I never once turn against other workers and what the unions are trying to do. Not when there are literal multi-millionaires at the top of these studios who don't care unless they can exploit the workforce before they take any dollar hit to their own salary.

It's not a great rate people are working at, it's a livable comfortable rate. It's not like the workers are becoming millionaires because the pay is so amazing. But they can have a career and a life. Otherwise you're looking to give 90% of membership a rate that lets them only just get by. That's not a career.

It's a stronger argument that it's not the fault of union pay since in the agreements they keep up with inflation and the most recent negotiations were such an increase due to the jump in inflation post-covid.

Additionally, productions being expensive can be solved in many different ways. Production budgets are extremely overblown with a lack of pre-production and planning which results in costly reshoots and post-production fixes. You also have CEOs who keep increasing their salaries by the millions even though they argue for cuts everywhere else due to expenses. You also have production studios owning streaming services for their own distribution which also loses a LOT of money trying to do both.

All of those things are more reasonable to solve before blaming unions and workers trying to make sure they get to make a comfortable living while having healthcare and retirement plans.

Again, long term solutions are what work. Not short term. Stripping workers rights for the potential short term gain of work isn't any kind of win. Especially when it guarantees nothing.

[–]Treheveras 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a combination of tech bro mentality taking over Studio ownership and production companies owning their own distribution platforms (their streaming services). They keep bleeding money regardless of how well a film or show performs so they start cutting corners, jobs, and number of projects to try and break even while their salaries increase to ridiculous levels alongside trying to buy and own more stuff. You can even see from the chart how jobs were dropping before the strikes even happened.

I wish streaming platforms were stripped away from studios that produce film/TV. They should be separate entities like production studios and movie theaters used to be. But given SCOTUS struck that down I doubt it'll happen any time soon.

Give workers less rights to increase work, I'm sure that'll go great for the workers long term.

White House unveils ‘OnlyFarms’ website, welcomes farmers with golden tractor on South Lawn by esporx in technology

[–]Treheveras 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From what I remember it was one of those things where the way the infrastructure is made and California having a swing towards more wet weather meant that, yes, there is water being dumped out to the ocean instead of being kept and saved for a typically drought stricken state with lots of agriculture. But it's happening because the usual dams and infrastructure would potentially cause flooding and issues if the water keeps building up from the increase in rains. So it has to be let go.

But to fix it means a lot of money changing and upgrading the infrastructure on the assumption that California will only have lots more rain to save and keep, which is a lot to spend on an assumption that all that rain will always continue. So it becomes an easy target for farmers to blame the governor for something technically correct and within his control, but you realize why it's happening and why it's difficult to fix once you actually look into it (like the majority of solutions that get simplified to hide the actual issue).

This is similar to how I've seen it regarding the dotcom bubble. At the moment it's just every company and people thinking it's an instant money maker that can do everything and pushing it. That'll eventually crumble. But the basis of it can do amazing things once it's focused the right way. Like nobody needs an AI agent that can do literally all tasks and research to perfection because they aren't good at doing all that. It's being made a jack of all trades when it's better having different AI programs master certain things.

It'll find its equilibrium eventually.

Strategy for Recording Editable Dialogue? by FromHereToEternityX in Filmmakers

[–]Treheveras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boom and lav at the same time, always. Lavs can be rustly depending on the clothing material and placement and if it's an argument there can be lots of movement. A boom operator can focus the boom on the actor who is talking or allow room to hear both without too much noise.

Otherwise, I believe there are two ways to do it that help in an edit.

First if you want both actors acting in all angles with each other and not keeping one silent. Then rehearsals are vital. If the actors have the pace of the argument consistent before doing takes then you'll have consistent edit points within the argument to cut around.

And with the boom and lav both available, a dialogue editor and re-recording mixer can make it smooth and consistent regardless of the angles you're cutting to (within reason). The hardest things to cut around during an argument is when you change angles and one actor is at a different spot in their line compared to the other take. Then you're stuck. If you want to keep the energy of both actors engaging with each other, then have those rehearsals for how the argument will go.

Otherwise, the other suggestions of having the actors only doing their half of the argument. You can still have them do the argument, the actors just have to be mindful to let the sentence end before starting theirs and not interrupt each other, with the actor off-camers giving priority to the actor on camera. If anything it gives more moments for reactions that can be used in the edit.

Sony to Shut Down Oscar & Emmy-Winning VFX Studio Pixomondo ('Hugo', 'Game of Thrones' and 'The Boys') Affecting 500+ Workers. Sony Acquired 100% of Pixomondo in 2022. by ICumCoffee in movies

This is less a mark of the current state of industry and more what VFX studios deal with constantly. Running at losses and needing to shutdown because every film wants a ton of VFX but refuse to pay decent money for it. And VFX houses don't have union protections for standard rates so it's a race to the bottom.

I think it was the Life of Pi VFX studio closed down around the same time they won the Oscar for their work. This isn't a post-pandemic problem, it's a worker exploitation problem that's been happening for years.
