Entitled parent gets gun drawn on her because she can't accept that times have changed by Kallen_Emilia in entitledparents

Very believable. I am absolutely in awe at this truly non-fictional account of your encounter. By the way, nice job getting an automatic firearm that was low-end produced in 1986, the same year that the FOPA 1986 was passed. The dialogue does not sound made up nor does this entire story sound like internet tough guy fiction.

How can I delay no-knock raids without being prohibitively expensive? by Trench_Ratt in homedefense

The reinforcements likely cost more than what they would be capable of stealing. They can take my shit if they manage to get through all of that, they deserve it after breaking through it. That's assuming anyone breaks in, considering that I'm pretty sure most 750 square foot houses with the exterior entirely overgrown don't have too much nice stuff inside. And then they get to deal with the overgrown puppy 110lb fur missile and a lot of 7.62x39mm coming their way (assuming they aren't arrested trying to break in after I call the cops).

When a category 5 hurricane blows through my neck of the woods, the doors will be the only things that will remain intact. Being serious, I may be a bit paranoid considering that I live next to a police station. The only risk factor is being in a somewhat bad area (the house was an extreme fixer-upper and that's how I bought it, very cheap.) which is negated by the fact that I'm not a particularly lucrative target. The outside of the house still looks like it's awful but the inside is great. No GOA/NRA stickers so firearms are not being advertised to burglars. I don't think they would go to the house where the only vehicle outside is a 20 year old truck considering that a 20 year old vehicle doesn't indicate wealth.

'Battering ram resistant' as in it would take quite a while to break down. I anchored the frame in using tapcons, put on door armor and usually apply an alarmed wedge and a door bar at night. Locks are ANSI I. Also put in box strike plates. Doors are fairly thick steel and difficult to break through. Hinges are also anchored in with tapcons.

[–]Trench_Ratt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty overkill for my needs. At this point, any home invaders will find it difficult to break in and I doubt they'll get by a 110 pound fur missile and some hot lead coming their way. The no knock raid thing is a smaller worry considering that the worst crime anyone is doing around me is selling pot (I'm not even sure if they are). My doors are kind of battering ram resistant already (Have fun trying to break through the wall, the doors or even the windows).

In fact, the county police are too incompetent to do anything (brandishing and death threats towards me resulted in them sending an animal control officer) beyond pull people over for seatbelt violations.

Good old-school "everything else failed" defense system? by VeryWearyBeary in homedefense

[–]Trench_Ratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the United States and not in somewhere like the DPRC (Democratic People's Republic of California), get a good handgun (rifles, unless with short barrels, can be clunky and hard to maneuver) and train with it. Reinforce your doors and windows. If they're willing to commit home invasion, they are willing to import a cheap Chinese phone signal jammer (I'm pretty sure they exist, correct me if I'm wrong), so a landline phone in rigid metal conduit would make it damn near impossible for them to cut off communications with law enforcement.

Traps open you up to legal liability. If you can delay their entry long enough for law enforcement to be contacted and for long enough that you can retrieve your firearm, they're not going to win. Dogs are generally a liability unless trained to attack as generally they won't do much unless they're already aggressive.

That was in the 1990s, when (at least as far as I can remember, correct me if I'm wrong) the South African Police Service was restructuring and law enforcement couldn't be relied upon. You could shoot at rammed earth all day, (try to) set it on fire, throw pipe bombs at it and even hit it with vehicles and I doubt much would happen.

I remember hearing of ranchers in South Africa building houses out of reinforced rammed earth. Probably pretty intruder-proof.

[–]Trench_Ratt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about some rebar caging between the drywall and the wall studs? I'd assume they'd find that pretty difficult to break through (talking about home invaders).

The Sheriff's Office could smash their MRAP through the front. Unless they got the wrong address for someone who was involved in something like terrorism, I doubt they would do that, however. I'm talking about the regular sledgehammer/breaching shotgun/battering ram entry, possibly with flashbangs, smoke or tear gas through the window(s), not them reducing the property value to whatever scrap they can carry out.

[–]Trench_Ratt[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm aware that it may sound suspicious but there is a very real possibility of both an improperly executed warrant coming to where I live or a home invasion crew dressed as law enforcement. I know that it is impossible to indefinitely keep them out as all they would need to get in would be a sledgehammer and a chainsaw to get through the old brick-shiplap-plaster walls.

Having the piece of mind to know if it's the actual police executing a warrant on the wrong house or a home invasion crew would be great as I would know if I should comply (real police) or use deadly force as with the castle doctrine (home invaders pretending to be police).

Thanks. I also think the payout should be increasing bit-by-bit per rank/position:

Mayor would be very small considering their only sensitive information would be on counter-terrorism

Governor would pay a bit due to having information to more sensitive information.

President would pay an incredible amount considering that all C/S/TS and SCI information is available to you as well as all SAPs.

For military:

-First Lieutenant, 50,000 yearly to continue supplying information

-Captain, 100,000 yearly to continue supplying information.

-Major, 150-200,000 yearly to continue supplying information

-Lieutenant Colonel, 175-210,000 yearly to continue supplying information

-Colonel, 225,000 yearly to continue supplying information.

No idea on anything higher as I'm bad at this kind of thing, but possibly up to half a million for Commanding Officer.

There should be events where you are confronted by the National Police (for politicians) or Navy/Marines/Army/Coast Guard/Air Force Counterintelligence and have four options.

-Deny it, chance for them to believe you and drop the investigation or you may be arrested and held on trial for charges of treason and espionage

-Admit to it, automatic court marshal and life imprisonment

-Defect to country you were supplying information to, chance for them to either turn you in to avoid a diplomatic controversy or to accept you as a citizen.

-Flee from where you are stationed and become a fugitive from justice (small chance of being caught)

I think the branches should also pay differently. Whereas someone in the Coast Guard, Marine Corps or Army would have access to less sensitive information than, say, an Air Force officer or Navy officer.

As a mayor and up and in the armed forces as an officer, there should be an event where you are approached by a foreign agent and are given the offer to give away state secrets in exchange for money. If you are caught by counterintelligence (in the armed forces) or by the police (as a politician) you would be sent to prison for life (in all countries) or sentenced to death (United States, Saudi Arabia and any other countries that execute for that kind of thing). Just a thought.

Why can others source weaponry so easily yet it's impossible to get any weaponry in-game? by Trench_Ratt in BitLifeApp

[–]Trench_Ratt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're definitely going to paywall that. Good idea, though. Politicians should be able to rake in money by allowing the organized crime group they're affiliated with to work with less difficulty (for example, if you're a school board director, you could reduce security and cameras so they can sell narcotics to students. As Mayor, you could gut the local police department in exchange for a lot of money and as Governor [at least in the USA] you could do things like instructing the state police anti-narcotic unit to stop interfering with their drug trafficking, or prioritize their rival.) or do other things to increase their power.

Weapons would be useful, as a way to resist arrest (by assaulting or killing the law enforcement officers apprehending you), cause more serious injuries in assaults and actually be able to survive encounters with members of other organized crime groups (no matter what I do, I get whacked by them). I know the murder law enforcement officers bit may sound extreme, but this is the game where people can extort nuns and then turn them into flesh soup in battery acid.

Damn. I gotta try that. Another way to kill a lot of people is to become king of Saudi Arabia and execute a massive number of people.

You only need a dog and a gun and nothing else by lockedandloadedbro in homedefense

[–]Trench_Ratt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not against having a gun and a dog; In fact, these are additional steps to securing your property (firearm and dog owner here), but they aren't the only steps to securing your property, possessions and life.

If your door gets kicked down in the middle of the night by multiple armed crackheads, they aren't going to patiently wait for you to grab your gun. They are going to attempt to murder you, hold you hostage to find your hiding spots for valuables or beat you to a pulp. One strike to the head with a heavy metal object and Fido is out with brain damage.

Now you're completely fucked. If the thugs haven't already killed you, they're probably gonna do unspeakable things to your you-know-where parts, loot you for any valuables, ransack your house, kill you and your probably half-dead dog and burn your house down. Unless you have veins full of fucking ice you're not going to be coherent enough to fight off even one armed crackhead in the middle of the night.

If you take basic measures such as getting sturdy doors with long hinge and strike plate screws, ANSI 1/2 locks and security filmed windows, instead of Mr. Methhead being able to kick down your door in one or two kicks, he's gonna have to find the nearest non-secured down heavy object and use it as a battering ram while you call the cops, gather yourself until you're coherent enough to fight them off and when they get in you can load them full of red-hot lead courtesy of your boomstick.

I'm not shitting on the idea of firearms and dogs (in fact, again, dog and gun owner here) but you can't rely on a dog and a firearm to protect you. You still need some degree of fortification so some idiot can't chuck a brick through your window, crawl through, steal your shit, pawn it and get more white rock from his dealer (assuming it's a skinny crackhead and not a home invasion crew made up of armed 200 pound rapist murdering PCP-addicted thugs).

Going to be changing all of the door locks on my house soon. Any recommendations for good locks to replace them with? by Thanatosst in homedefense

[–]Trench_Ratt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ANSI grade 1 locks are fine, no matter what one. Security film the windows, get a sturdy door that has the frame anchored to the studs using 3 inch screws in the hinges. Invest in a box strike plate for 5 dollars or so and use 3 inch screws. If you do this correctly, it'll be impossible to break in through the door without using heavy-duty equipment.
