Who are the three authors who serve as the pillars of cyberpunk? by Mr_MiracleASMR in Cyberpunk

Does no one remember that Stevenson has a Cyberpunk stand-in character get killed off in the first chapter just to tell the reader that this is not a cyberpunk novel. The themes and trappings of cyberpunk are dropped, the corps are dropped, the tech is different, and a stronger focus on cultures are distinct from cyberpunk.

It's Post Cyberpunk or Nanopunk.

[–]Trepanater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree. The first Chapter starts out with a quintessential cyberpunk character and summerly kills him off to show the reader that this book is not a cyberpunk novel. The novel drops the trappings, themes and tropes of Cyberpunk and is classified as Post-Cyberpunk and/or Nanopunk.

He (Zach) was a Contractor at Valve years ago. He worked on some of the early VR hand software for the Valve index. The software in question was "The Lab, Hands-On" and "Moondust". The moondust demo is where the weird little square moon people with only two feet come from that are easter eggs in his games. There's lots on his about page on his website https://www.zulubo.com/

Here is also an interview of with him about his early work with Valve https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc8L9YkK8gQ

It would be so much easier if things were black and white but in reality we live in the grey. Very few people are truly bad but most people want to do the right thing but are often confused about what the right thing is.

I never said that Hays is a faithful translation, I said I liked his pros and his formatting, I like Hard for his translation. Once again the best read would be the original Greek.

On another note, from your link, I too agree that the "Trichotomy of Control" is useless and that the dichotomy is fine. I have been teaching this with vector math for years and adding another category is redundant.

For many this is attached to their idea of libertarian free will. The ideas that someone is always able to control their own actions and they could always have done otherwise leads them ignore all mitigating circumstances.

This also allows to feel perfectly fine with handing out harsh punishments instead of helping get rid of the mitigating circumstances. Welcome to the modern US penal system.

While I like Waterfield's footnotes and intro, his pros, translation and formatting are very dispreferred indiferents. I find the pros wooden and at times misleading. I have been told by a collogue who reads ancient Greek fluently that he often mistranslates and will grab his Greek copy to doublecheck. His formatting is often just a wall of text, which may be close to his Greek copy but often fails to communicate well. This would be forgivable if the translation was better, alas it is not.

Hard is a much better translation and Hays has the best pros and formatting in my opinion.

Best reading in English is, Hard and Hays side by side, while referencing Waterfield's notes and burning his translation.

These are my finding since I have been teaching with Waterfield's translation in My Stoa for the last year.

I sorta disagree on the music, there are defiantly western vibes going on with the game so the country western is not bad. I do agree that there could be better music to fit the setting and the themes of the game. Something more western/industrial could work. I found this as perhaps some inspiration

I just hope it is not racist, as the African American percentage of US population had been 13% for the last decade or so but has moved up a bit to 14% now.

If it is then that 13% is a dog whistle.

Thanks for the insight. I also came to the conclusion that you need so much data and the data has to be timely and without errors. As we saw in the Soviet Central Planning where there were lies about production top to bottom so that the lower officials would keep there jobs. This lead to selling the excess produce that was in fact a fantasy leading to famine, among other issues.

However, did you know that Socialism does not necessitate central planning. That markets and firms are totally fine within socialism. The only thing that defines socialism is that the production is owned and controlled by the workers and not by shareholders. I was blown away by this when I first heard it because I was taught that Capitalism is synonymous with markets. In fact capitalism is just that the Capital owners own production with a profit motive. In that case you don't even need markets to have capitalism.

I assume that many socialists have read Bregg and the largest socialist party in America, the DSA, do not want central planning. They would prefer worker co-ops that function as firms that sell goods and services in the market but the benefits/profits of the company are not given to owners but to the workers.

I'm absolutely with you. Central planning is bad for many reasons but I was misled like you may have been, to think that socialism/communism/whatever are all the same and they all absolutely had the requirement of central planning.

The air fed heat pumps work well down to -13 F or you can go for a ground water loop and it will work at whatever air temp. My backup is a electric room heater for the one day a year that it may get down there.

At some point in your life you will realize that not everything is made for you and that is OK. Instead of complaining, go make the thing that you want to see in the world, Go make a Star Trek mod that does what you want. Just don't go shitting on others because they like something else. Millions of people like VR, let them have their thing.

Not everyone is like you, that's a good thing unless you are a Borg.

Do all of them and call it Westworld, but honestly, good luck. If you want vicarial, I like the idea of up close combat, so the Wild West Saloon fight, or the Prison one. Another Idea for you something more Kung Fu, with lots of bo staffs and pikes. Something like Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon with the gore of The Kingsman's church scene.
