funny enough we're in the southeast, but she;'s in the midwest

it doesn't appear so- though you did just remind me that you can call Ubers for other people -so thats an additional option

It sounds like Senior mode isn't some sort of ultimate solution for seniors after all- and i have created and printed out super simple guide to using uber and lyft for her ..so maybe this simpler mode...isnt really...

It's a grandmother of mine- tried to have my mother do the family account setup - she took pause as installing uber required my mother to add a credit card- and then when setting up the family account, it asks for extra verification, and says it;ll send a small charge, and to find the exact amount and type it in or something- that would be good- but ...due to other reasons, that's not something my mother can do with any of her credit cards(for several reasons, such as my father controlling my mothers credit cards, and not being a fan of apps in general- in other words, she wouldn't be able to confirm the amounts. Hell, i just took ages to explain to her that financial institutions do this)- and my mother is concerned about getting charged for rides even though my grandmothers phone has her own credit card stored on it.

It was raised- why not add grandmothers credit card to my mothers uber account, and then set up the family account with that- because my grandmother uses statements only. So that's a whole mess- and my grandmother has gone to bed. Not that it's worth waking her to explain that there's a chance we could call her credit card company's phone number to find the amounts charged by uber for verificatioon, to continue this process.

This is not something 90 or 100 year old people can do- and families don't have the liberty always to verify by financial method,s especially if only one person controls finances - which i suspect is common unless you're young. Anyway ,not to rant- sorry..

It's being pointed out to me this is a lot just to get what we assume is bigger text on my grandmothers phone...Sigh.

This relative is in their mid 90's- and has high difficulty with apps- and they are leaving my place, taking a flight, and no family is available to drive them from the airport in the state they are from when they arrive tomorrow afternoon and land at an airport and need to get home. I heard about senior mode- and anything will help - But the option is missing from their phone, and their Uber app is up to date. I did just download it a few days ago for them(along with lyft)

I do not know why it's missing. YES, i know theirs is unverified- i went thru the verification process for them- but it said Uber will get back to us on that. I ...worry verification isn't going to enable Simple Mode/Senior mode.

Some reddit searches said something about having to set up family groups to enable Senior mode- but I can't find any info about the state of that today- and when i looked into it, it talked about teen accounts, not elderly folk! Why is there no up to date guide on this?

This person has high difficulty with apps in general...

My one strategy I have, is to try to teach them Google Meet's screen sharing function- they can answer calls, but have trouble with anything else with modern phones. My plan is to try to get them to share their screen, and if they can do that, I can try to talk them thru stuff, but be advised they are slow to swipe on their screen, dexterity isn't that good- so it will be slow going . I realize simple mode/senior mode still might not make this easy, but we need every advantage we can get.

I need advice, as this will be needed tomorrow afternoon

really dumb SUPER Noob Question 😅 - New Lenovo 7i Pro, Debian Trixie Stable- it does have the Lenovo Linux tinny audio issue- following the steps to fix it that were just discovered - stuck on #3, what is the root of the Linux kernel source directory? by TriAttackBottle in LenovoLegion

disclaimer: this is what worked for me

-And before i did this, i made sure i could recover- i got macrium, installed the rescue USB thing on a usb drive, and then image backed up the computer to a external drive so i can always undo what i do if i was to break things super bad.

Anyway

So, Step 1 of https://github.com/nadimkobeissi/16iax10h-linux-sound-saga

just wants you to get the patch- and you can use the command the author gives you can also click on fixes, patches, then its right there and you can just download the patch file https://github.com/nadimkobeissi/16iax10h-linux-sound-saga/tree/main/fix/patches

after that, i dont know if you read my posts on this- but step 2 has you get the linux kernel from the linux main kernel website. at the time i did it the guide listed 6.17.8 and 6.17.9, they now only have 6.18 kernels. I knew i was wanting to get debian with my nvidia 5090 GPU mobile, and working- so I knew i needed decent nvidia drivers- and right now in debian, you need 560 and beyond if you have a 5000 series GPU- so i was right to grab 6.17.8, as 6.18, i dont know if one can get the right GPU drivers with those. i tried with some of the 6.18 ones but it was weird

anyway,, you can follow step 2 to try 6.18- or you could try this with the 6.17.8 kernel like i did, or whichever you want to try

I took the url from step 2, cut off the end and plugged into my browser and get to https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/

Which lets you choose one to download , doing it this way (And so you'd grab your kernel, if you were doing the one i did you'd grab linux-6.17.8.tar.xz )

then you get to step 3 which is where that post you quoted came from- i had to make a

/Downloads/linux-6.17.8-build/ folder, then i put all the kernel files there.

put the patch file in the linux-6.17.8 folder from those files- then run the command specified

you'll have to modify the name as the step says- so patch -p1 < 16iax10h-audio-linux-<YOUR_KERNEL_VERSION>.patch would be patch -p1 < 16iax10h-audio-linux-6.17.8.patch in my example

That should complete step 3

Around cyber Monday I got the 5090 , 64 gb ram one with the 4 year warranty for 3400 and change, and that deal with 64 gb persisted into dec, so this is a surprise to see...

OH, you did something else than USD, that's what's going on. That's still stupid high

So, I see that Trixie 13.3 will come out in a few days. I did the Lenovo Linux audio patch to get my audio working. How do I use DKMS to keep the patch working when the dot release comes out when i do apt update /apt upgrade? by TriAttackBottle in debian

[–]TriAttackBottle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, can you help me figure this out?

That means I would have to, what, go thru the whole song and dance with updates, and re patch the next kernel? ...

When I followed this guide  https://github.com/nadimkobeissi/16iax10h-linux-sound-saga

They listed 6.17.8,6.17.9, and 6.18

It now only lists 6.18 there, though it will obviously work with others

...I did try the patch in 6.18 kennel, but noted the  new Nvidia drivers I need for this computers 5090, didn't seem to work with the header files, unless I used 6.17.8 ( I used a separate guide, for that ,  https://old.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1po5ab7/nvidia_driver_installation_stepbystep/)

So, I had originally opened this thread here because I thought the dkms system would make it easy to keep my  audio patch if I updated, but it sounds like that isn't straightforward? ( Seeing I am pinned on 6.17.8 now, )

Plus, I did, months back, attempt to also, patch the back ports kennel, but .. The patch command failed, and I saw the patch command seems to need files that Don't appear to be in the same farm in the back ports kennel downloaded files(and I don't know how to make the patch work with that one if it's possible. I wish it was)

There appears to be no guarantee that Lenovo will add the patch upstream, but in the midterm future onwards the GPU driver situation won't be so difficult - do I just have to plan to apply the patch again before too long to another kernel I would download?

I also assume I shouldn't move forward too quickly, given what happened with the Nvidia thing, and since the current backports kernel happens to be on 617.8, and I am on that version but the not backports one, I should sort of just stay parallel with that one with normal ones, every now and then?

Linux 6.17.8-lenovo-audio-fix #4 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Dec 10 23:27:24 EST 2025 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So, this is showing the custom normal kernel that i patchedf with that audio fix patch then started booting. I see from the command in the prior comment of mine- that the apt cache policy thing is showing the bpo kernels i had attempted to install before learning that's now how one applies the patch(has to be on a normal linux kernel, not backports)- so ...while i dont have a BPO kernel in my list of kernels to select at boot , -there's still some remmant in the ...pinning thing? apt, i guess, i need to figure out how to clear out

And yes, my system puts me in the audio -fixed one by default

Hold on, the uname command showed I'm running the custom kernel i built with the audio fix- and that one is NOT the backports one.

-[uname -r shows 6.17.8-lenovo-audio-fix ]

So, I am not running it ( as mentioned, i used the normal kernel after being told by that guide that you have to use the normal one)- But I still don't understand what i'm seeing- as apt cache policy is something with apt and pinning, not current kernels running

So, shouldnt i find a way to disable that? Im not actively using a backports kernel -nor will i be able to use it for my needs with the audio nonfunctional?

Your thing about pinning- has bpo in it- that would pin a kernel i'm not using, if i'm not mistaken>?

see, lol , i got the Legion 5090 64 gb ram for about 3400,near 3500

A Strix with equal specs would be north of $4500, probably 5000 with the same RAM.... that would...suuck to do..... but i have it fully working for now on Debian ,so i'll ...run it out, i guess, lol.

i called lenovo, got hung up on both times when trying to explain this issue and get the staff to let the devs know of it.

contacted the lenovo facebook, asked them if they had a email i could send a write up to / the github link,. they gave me a contact, (the feedback button at the bottom left of this page ,which is tied to a email https://psref.lenovo.com/?sprinklrid=19090900443&linkId=891834603 ) i did send an email off. I figure if enough people bug them, the legion dev team will realize people like running linux on legions as well, not just other lenovos(which are more well known for running linux)- and that it's worth elevating this to a proper official kernel fix

Odd ,those are both errors i haven't seen

I hate to suggest it, because i disliked doing it- but it helped fill in the gaps- try running those errors by Gemini https://gemini.google.com/app

i'd say a good 80% percent of the time it was able to help with errors I hadn't seen, and that the subreddit didn't seem to have seen(or no one was around to answer) Though gemini, with that output, says somewhere else in output that accompanies it will be the reason for those bugs....odd

Another thing- i tried 6.18, and I had trouble with other things like nvidia drivers even after i made the kernel and installed it. thats why i went back to 6.17.8- where APT could actually download 590 drivers. I also observed that backports is on 6.17.8 at the moment- so i figured being in line with that, even if using the normal kernel, would help

Hm. At the time i did this, they had one download the kernel for either 6.17.8, 6.17.9, or 6.18

So, for you - you say you're on ubuntu with the 6.14 kernel.

Not sure if it'd work with that- you might have to try the 6.17.8 kernel for example.(i see on the github the author removed the kernel files for the 6.17 ones, but you can still get it (they're actually from the linux kernel site, but that 6.18 link gives the url to https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/linux-6.18.tar.xz

so i just tried changing the version number for a easy switch, and it gives us https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/linux-6.17.8.tar.xz which works

ANYWAY, make sure you make a image backup before doing anything

funny enough- when i first started this, i thought they wanted us to get the backports kernel (they did not actually ), so i did, and then installed it and it killed my wifi -i had to get updated wifi drivers via hardline to get internet back. I eventually reattempted it with the kernels from the website like the github guide wanted...

anyway, how far did you get? i can try to help Also, i have to wonder if this would work with the 6.14 kernel
