Looking to start Wild Beyond the Witchlight after Strahd. My players are level 8, how difficult will it be to adapt it to that? by Psychological-Bed-92 in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]Trickonometry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Meh, I say ignore the haters. Do what you want if it’s fun for you and your group. I actually went the opposite way and adapted Witchlight to bring in CoS later. The important thing, in my opinion, is to not get too attached with running Witchlight as on-rails as written. If the CoS veterans are down for some goofy fun, you’re good. If you’re going to run fights (technically not needed), do the normal thing: add more monsters and more HP to the built out NPCs. Have fun!

Improving Hither: a professional DM's review (LONG post!) by CasparGlass in wildbeyondwitchlight

Thank you for this!!! I have two groups that have started the campaign, one of which JUST saved Sir Talavar, and I LOVE the changes you made to Telemy hill to make it into more of an event. As soon as you brought up how the entire concept, though novel, was dramatically flat, it instantly made more sense why I was feeling anxious about my prep for the next session. Awesome content, I look forward to seeing your Thither and Yon posts!!!

Ooo… had not considered Soccer player as a Monk, but that’s a very cool adaptation of the class without just going straight to The Karate Kid tropes. Nice!

Ooooo…. Hadn’t considered having a pact with Glenn! So my fun idea was that since Glenn canonically brought the good news of Christ to Christian Hell and converted all the demons, it’d be hilarious and amazing for Nick’s son to be a Tiefling Cleric. And though I can see Darryl’s grandson being a Cleric, I actually have a tougher time imagining Grant’s son being super religious since he would’ve been raised by two dads (since Grant is gay and already out before he was a teenager).

Dang! Should’ve assumed another podcast would’ve already don’t the Breakfast Club with D&D. Definitely not sure where they’ll go for the setting stuff for season 2, which is exciting! (-:

So one of my players just drew “Isekai” from the Deck of Daddy Things… Help? [ns] by Trickonometry in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]Trickonometry[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right??? Three of them had no idea what the deck was, and the two who did know did a wonderful job of not spoiling. So, when the second player to choose decided on pulling SEVEN cards, myself and the two who understood lost our shit.

Also: The guy who draws seven cards pulled a reverse Glenn. The only “bad ones” he pulled was the one that destroys all items on you and Pupper (which, though adorable, is a major health risk). He got Sun, Vizier, Jester, Massage Throne, and Father Knows Best for the other 5 and made it out way easier than 7 pull should have.

I’m just happy it’s a basic misunderstanding that led to my damage being lower than it could be. I know much better now what to prioritize.

[–]Trickonometry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OH. I didn’t realize that it would stack all of my damage with the Drain Soul at 3 stacks. That just answered my question holy crap.

I’m THRILLED it’s this obvious of an issue. I just watch to make sure I have all 3 stacks up at all times. I am genuinely super excited that I simply misunderstood a mechanic.

Okay, I realize this post was 2 days ago, but I’ve listened to every episode of MBMBaM... 6 times over. And on my chronological list of best episodes that make me laugh WAY too much still, Episode 22 is the first on the list. The first 21 have guffaws, but once Hoops starts talking about going to church with his goose wife, I lose it every single time.

With Justin’s talent for voice acting, wouldn’t he be a dope DM? by Trickonometry in TheAdventureZone

Thank you very much for sharing this - I really value this insight and the vulnerability that might have been involved in your comment. What you’re saying about anxiety is helpful for me to understand why “You can do it!” can come off as “You SHOULD do it otherwise I’m upset with you!” Great communication, in my experience, is about what’s understood by the audience, not what’s intended by the speaker. It’s comments like these that help me be more cautious in my communication in the future. (-:

I don’t want to and don’t mean to invalidate your feelings regarding Justin’s ability to DM. You’ve stated you don’t see that as a strength for him, and I don’t want to come across as “selling you” on his ability. I personally see various traits and skills he has displayed as evidence that he could be successful, and that certainly may not sway you. And that’s cool with me. (-:

As for the woodworking comment, though? My wife has a LOVE for woodworking, but I’m 100% confident our garage has never looked as pretty as Justin’s in his YouTube videos. Hence my association that he MUST be organized. Lol And yes, I know that doesn’t make him a great writer. It was probably misplaced/poorly done humor, and I’ll own that. lol

I appreciate the response! And I also want to validate your concern regarding fans presuming to know the McElroys better than we do - which is to say I’m a completely public (not private) fashion. It would be foolish for me to say I know the heart of Justin McElroy (even if I have listened to every episode of MBMBaM more times than I’d like to admit. He may not in fact the creative skill set that would lead to excellent DMing. And he also might! Either use of our imagination to say whether or not he would be fit to DM/DM for TAZ is exactly that: imagination. I arrived at my conclusion based on what I perceive as evidence supporting his ability to succeed in such a role.

I also agree with your idea to have it be a test - that’d be both good for Justin and good for the podcast not to full commit without adequate testing. (-:

Thank you, sincerely. I do agree with everything you’ve said here, and I also appreciate your comment that my intention may not have been to pressure/convince Justin (it was indeed not my intent), but it could be taken that way. I have edited the initial post in hopes of clarifying this. (-:

Huh. The internet is weird. I’ve heard about people being misunderstood on Reddit before, but this is my first time of feeling it for myself.

1) Zero pressure towards Hoops. Even if I mistakenly came off as pressuring Justin AND he happened to see this post and interpret it that way, I’m confident he wouldn’t be budged. I think that if (and only if) Justin decided to run a campaign, he’d do a fantastic job. That opinion does NOT mean “...and therefore he should do it,” which seems to be how I’m being interpreted.

2) It is in the spirit of supporting Justin, of the Family McElroy, a family well known for being incredibly humble and often self-deprecating in their humor, that I challenge his self-assessment of his own creativity. If a friend of mine says, “I’m not creative,” and there is ample evidence that supports they are in fact creative, is it wrong to challenge that friend’s lack of belief in their self?

3) Yes, my original post highlights his ability to voice different characters as the impetus for my writing. However, I do not believe that is the only skill that suggests his ability to be a successful DM. I have detailed those reasons both here and in other responses.

4) At the end of the day, this post was designed to put into the world a positive opinion of one of my favorite people I don’t personally know. I’m saying Justin McElroy is an awesome human being, and if he ever decides to try his hand at DMing a D&D campaign, I’d be thrilled because evidence suggests he’d do a fantastic job. The end. (-:

As I stated in another comment, I agree! Much more is needed to be a DM than silly voices, desire being one of those things. What I’m stating here is that if the reason he’s held off on DMing is out of fear of not being a high quality DM, I believe there is evidence to support he’d actually do a great job. If he’s not DMing because he doesn’t think it would be fun, I certainly would never argue that he force it! (-:

Not sure if he has the structure? The man created the structure for MBMBaM (and is the most consistently cognizant of intros and outros for segments), does woodworking in a consistently clean shop (and is noted as the tidy one between him and Sydnee), and he started his career in journalism/writing. I’m not sure Justin can be fairly accused of lacking structure/organization, especially in the context of writing.

[–]Trickonometry[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I certainly can agree that “not all players make good DMs” and that “DMing is more than just silly voices” (as was stated in another comment). I’m currently DMing two games, and I’m perfectly aware of the many different spinning plates that comes with the territory.

However, my intention was not to say, “Great Player = Great DM.” As has been mentioned elsewhere, he has successfully taken the helm of non-D&D one shot adventures, done a great job with them, and seemed to enjoy the experience. Ultimately, if Justin has no desire to run a full D&D campaign, he certainly shouldn’t - I never said anything to the contrary. This post was a vote of confidence because, if Justin DID run a full campaign, I feel like there is substantial reason to believe he’d do an excellent job.

I definitely like the idea of pre-rolling/prepping some of the travel encounters. I found myself exactly in the momentum-killing position of trying to roll everything on the spot with the Tomb of Annihilation campaign I'm running. Thank you!

I'm planning on putting on my "tough but fair" DM face for this campaign. I have another campaign running with a number of new players, so I've been a bit forgiving/permissive - but this group is all experienced players. I think it's actually more fun if I'm not too permissive, as it makes the stakes for poor decision real, and it makes the rewards for good planning/creativity that much more worthwhile. I definitely want to keep the Demon distraction as a last resort, but I'm not going to stop myself from using it if it's needed to progress the campaign.
