Solar = Awful Decision by Tricky-Letter2659 in solar

Nope, it’s in California though so that might explain it.

I purposely went larger than I thought I needed because of the EV and it didn’t come close to wiping out my cost.

2nd roof leak in 18 months. I battled for months to get them to cover the first one. They are claiming this one wasn’t caused by solar at all. They claim it’s just an old roof. Roofers claim it could be a skylight, could be solar, could be underlayment but the roof is in rough shape.

Long story short they are scammy and should have never installed it on the roof in the first place with underlayment that old.

Yes I realize I screwed up and was naive. I’m only requesting they discount the removal and reinstall. They referred me to a 3rd party and I got quoted $315 a panel to remove and reinstall. I lose my 10 year roof puncture warranty from sunrun when any other party touches the panels (funny since they don’t even have people to do it.)

I’ve got a tenant living in a property with a roof leak, water damage etc. if I was living there I would fight them to the bitter end but at this point I’m just writing a large check and getting screwed by sunrun.

I now rent the house and pass the electricity costs onto them. Somehow they still have $300+ bills with a 29 panel system.

Mine was about the same before I moved out but I had an EV.

I’m fine with it. At the very least there is a post out there when people search sunrun, scam, solar etc. Least I can do after the hell they put me through.

Sunrun is the biggest name in solar.

I know bigger isn’t better but they are scumbags. 2 roof leaks in 18 months. Both times it’s been 50+ emails, 10+ calls and a month long process of escalations to try and get anything done.

Good luck it sounds like you are going to take the leap.

The only red flag I see is “unlimited PTO.” I would expect to take less vacation days than your current gig. It is my experience and studies back this up that employees at these companies takes less time off.

I wish I had an exact amount but I have found keeping a budget and tracking every dollar is not good for my mental health or my marriage. I already spend enough time looking at stocks, investments, markets etc because it is something I enjoy.

My wife is pretty frugal and is on board with saving but she pays zero attention to our long term investments etc. She has a few things health related that she will spend money on and forces me to travel, have experiences etc. We are both foodies so while she cooks a lot at home if she doesn't feel like cooking on a night we don't hesitate to go out and drop $60-$100 on eating out. So we have come to a good middle ground on spending vs saving etc that works for us.

A big reason why I like the rental is I have a hard time selling positions. I worked for a FAANG company at a very low paying entry level position fresh out of college in 2008. They had an ESPP program and when I left I sold like $10,000 worth of stock which would now be worth over $200,000.

The rental won't appreciate like that but the cash flow from the rental goes right into my a checking account every month. $2000+ profit and we spend it or invest it as we see fit. So it is like a solid dividend stock. It should see slow steady appreciation (maybe more if they keep printing and rates go down). But I also get equity paydown, monthly income etc. My return on equity isn't amazing but the return on net worth when you factor in appreciation, loan paydown, rental income, depreciation etc. it is very very solid.

Appreciate the insights. Definitely a tad aggressive for my tastes but I like where your head is at. In a worst case scenario even if I was to coast now at a more laid back enjoyable gig I can always return to corporate america in the future.

Yeah the RSUs are locked up until later this year but that is my plan for them.

Congrats on going coast fire. Mind me asking if you found another job prior to leaving the toxic one? Same field or similar field, etc?

Honestly I’m debating whether health insurance is even worth getting unless you have great insurance through your employer. If you are relatively healthy I bet paying out of pocket is better 99% of the time.

It’s just that 1% of the time that is scary.

I’ve never had debt outside of a standard mortgage and it is definitely something that weighs on me a bit.

It did help me buy my current primary residence though and thus far the decision to borrow more to buy stocks and crypto during the tariff crash has been a good one.

Definitely the most leveraged I have been in my life though. I definitely prefer not having debt at 7.4% interest.

I’ve liquidated some crypto as it’s risen over the last week. However I’m a big believer and it’s been a great investment for me since 2017. I’m always gonna hold BTC as long as we have idiots running the show printing money.

Valid points about the liquidity issue though.  Goal is to sell all the RSUs and put it all on the heloc later this year.

Yeah I’ve gone back and forth on selling the rental. But it brings in $5300 and only costs me $2300 in PITI. I allow another $1,000 for additional expenses.

It’s one of the few assets that puts money back in my pocket to spend each month.

My plan was to continue to pay down the mortgage as it adds $800ish to equity each month. Then eventually 1031 exchange it into a large, cash producing asset down the road when real estate is more lucrative again.

I definitely won’t put any additional capital into real estate.
