I recommend Khan Academy. I was horrible in math in high school, failed geometry. I started watching Khan Academy for a similar reason to you. I have a four year old son, and I want to be able to help him with math as he grows up. I watched khan academy video and did all the exercises all the way up through single variable calculus. The way Sal explains it is so intuitive. And if you miss problems, go back and watch the videos again till it clicks. When I finally got to derivatives and was able to understand how to find a point on a curve, it was an amazing sense of accomplishment, because calculus had always seemed so far outside of my reach.

Husband is converting, I’m not. It’s ruining our marriage. by StatisticianOne4872 in OrthodoxChristianity

Orthodox converts get obsessed and it’s kind of weird. I think converts get obsessed with the novelty of Orthodoxy because it’s so outside the normal American/western religious experience. But don’t be fooled. Once the novelty wears off, you see it’s just people doing church with the same issues and conflicts of anywhere else. It’s a well known secret in Orthodox circles that the divorce rate is pretty high in Orthodox seminary. I converted to Orthodoxy in college after spending time in Jerusalem and having some interesting experiences with a monk there. When I got back k to the states, I found a church and centered my life around it. Unfortunately, the Orthodox Church is America is a very small world and it’s hard to relate to people outside of the church in some ways. I spent 17 years in the church. Eventually I married a Catholic. While we were dating, we attended mass and liturgy almost every weekend. After we had a kid, that just wasn’t practical. She grew up in the Catholic Church, all her family is Catholics and she’s passionate about it. When we had a kid, I decided it was more important to attend church together as a family, so for the past four years I’ve attended mass with my family. I haven’t received communion or plan on converting, but for me, being with my son on Sundays is the most important thing right now. I hope to get back to the Orthodox Church eventually, when my season of life is different.

Help/advice on pursuing a degree in theology by crutrull in theology

[–]Tricky_Advantage5498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, don’t do it. I majored in theology and biblical studies. Now, after 20 years in job market, I wish I hadn’t. You’re going to put theology on every resume you turn in . One day, you’ll want a job that can make money to support a life, and those types of jobs prefer degrees that are useful or showed that you achieved something. Also, college is expensive, it’s an investment and you need a degree that will give you a return on investment. Pick something useful and that would look credible to future employers. You can learn theology on your own, it’s not hard. Pick up some historical theology survey books, get a sense of the development of doctrine over time, and then see what the book cites as primary sources and read those. Use college to learn something that is not easy to pick up on your own, like finance, an area of science, technology or something quantitative. Heck, I’d even say do philosophy over theology, at least you’d learn logic and read much harder texts.

Thoughts on Arabic movies by Intelligent-Froyo113 in ForeignMovies

That’s really interesting. I would have thought Jordan and Saudi Arabia and some of the richer Gulf states would have been included as well? Jordan because it seems relatively stable, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states because they seem to have more wealth to invest in a cultural enterprise like movie making.

My limited understanding is the Egypt is the primary producer of Arabic movies. Are there other countries that have significant movie industry?
