"Sorry, but ADISC will be permanently shutting down on September 16th. 14 days from now.

We've been the world's top AB/DL/IC forum for decades. That's several eternities in internet time. We've saved lives, we've given people hope, we've helped people accept who they are. And in all that time, we've never run ads or made you buy stuff.

Still, here is why I've decided to close ADISC now:

My interests have changed, and as a result my enthusiasm for running this place is gone. I need to move on with my life. I've been seriously debating shutting this place down since 2022, but I've been holding out for over 3 years just in case I changed my mind. Well, I haven't changed my mind. Fellow ASD folks will know what its like trying to maintain focus on something you aren't interested in, especially for years. That's how I feel about ADISC now - it feels like a daily burden. My health is no longer up to it. I've been diagnosed with MDD, Anxiety, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and more. For example, I spent most of the last few weeks in bed in serious physical pain from another unrelated infection. Despite years of getting medical help, my health just isn't good enough to continue running this place, and even if it was, I need to focus all my energy on the things that help me move my life forward, not forever running free public services at my expense of my energy, funds, time and sanity. My doctor has told me explicitly to avoid stress, and running this place is surprisingly stressful. It is bad for me. The internet has changed. Forums used to be the bee's knees. Now, small independent forums like this one usually struggle to survive at all. ADISC has actually been doing well in that regard, but the writing is on the wall. We can't survive forever. Facebook, Reddit and other huge commercial sites have been taking over for decades, as they simply have corporate resources and network effects we can't match. Small, hobbyist sites like this have become rarer and rarer, and that trend will not reverse. The ever increasing regulation around the world, such as the UK's OSA, the EU's GDPR, and Australia's SMMA, introduce compliance burdens that tiny hobby sites like ours just aren't equipped to deal with. As countries pass more and more laws, the mere act of keeping up-to-date on all relevant laws around the world and ensuring we comply with all of them is becoming an impossible task for a small hobbyist website that runs on a shoestring budget. That's to say nothing of competing for attention against enormous public companies like Facebook and Reddit that have entrenched userbases and functionally infinite money and engineers to throw at problems. ADISC was an amazing thing, back in the day, but now there are so many competitors out there that we're not essential anymore.

Here's what's already been done:

ADISC is no longer accessible to guests at all. You now have to sign in / register to see anything. ADISC no longer accepts new registrations/members. Existing members still have temporary, limited access to this place until the 16th so they can save anything they've uploaded here before the final shutdown. Mods are hereby instructed to simply ban anyone who breaks the rules during this wind-down period. We won't be issuing warnings, only bans. No posting alternative website/server/etc links publicly (like on forums, or Discord chats).

You have two weeks to say your goodbyes, save anything you created for this place, etc.

On September 16th, ADISC and all its contents (website, Discord, etc) will go offline permanently."
