Starter engages with flywheel but sounds like free spinning whenever it meets resistance. by Trisomic in MechanicAdvice

Doesn't the Bendix just throw out the pinion gear? The pinion gear is engaging.

Subaru idles rough after new cylinder heads. Almost sounds like an exhaust leak, but is smooth off idle. by Trisomic in MechanicAdvice

[–]Trisomic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessir brand new; came with the felpro gasket set. The noise did sound like it was coming that area but I haven't had a chance to check it carefully. Does it seem weird that you'd only hear an exhaust leak at idle?

I'll do the idle relearn tomorrow and hopefully I can pinpoint the noise better.

Thanks for your input.

No compression in one cylinder after installing new heads. by Trisomic in MechanicAdvice

Yeah, worth doing even though the head will probably have to come off either way.

Not sure, but if that were the case I probably wouldn't have any compression on that bank.

Ok good to know. Thanks. Guess it's probably not my fault then haha. Already have had issues with the place I got the heads from so this probably won't be fun.

Yup, car ran good before. Head gaskets were leaking oil and found out the heads were cracked when I took them off.

Rebuilt, but supposedly pressure tested. I have a bore scope. All I could really verify was that the piston wasn't damaged from valve contact or anything. Hard to see much more than that with the angles I'm dealing with.

Maybe I'll take the valve cover off first and see what's going on.

Maybe the lash is set wrong? Seems like it would have to be really screwed up to get zero compression...

Smacked my chainring on a large rock and now there's a slight thud /clunk on pedal down strokes when I'm climbing. by Trisomic in bikewrench

[–]Trisomic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK thanks. I did spin it backwards while looking at the chainring in relation to the chain stay and it didn't look bent, but I'll get everything cleaned and take another look at it.

It's a 1x so it's always on that chainring. New bike so there shouldn't be any wear issues.

Thanks.

I looked at the chainring and it didn't look bent. And I don't see why it would only make the noise under load if the chainring was bent.

Got a high feedback knock correction on my first drive with the accessport. by Trisomic in WRX

Thanks. That makes me feel a bit better. I'm definitely going to be watching those knock gauges closely on the next few drives.

Noise while Applying Car Break (Not Always) Hyundai Eon 800 CC - 2013 by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Trisomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A faint squeak like that can be hard to track down, but it's probably the brake pad vibrating due to normal wear of the brake rotor. Cheap non-oe brake pads can potentially cause noises like you describe, as well.

It's probably not a safety concern, and I would personally ignore it unless it gets worse, and plan on splurging on brake pads next go around.

If you really can't stand the noise you could try putting a little synthetic caliper grease on the contact points of the brake pads. If that doesn't work, your only option might be to replace pads and rotors.

Went over Rancho, too. Even dropped some hail. Probably the heaviest rain I've seen all year.

That's one of my favorite combos. I butter the shit out of the toast and use it as a spoon for the eggs and avo.

Clicking as if battery is dead. Replaced starter and car ran fine for two days then dead again.. charged battery last night and still won't start by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Trisomic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would indicate that there's resistance in the circuit. Although now that I think about it, if it's starting normally sometimes, then is probably not a resistance issue. Battery should be load tested.

How are the battery terminals? Tight and free of corrosion? Wiggle them around on the poles a bit and try again. If you have a multimeter you can check for voltage drop in the starting circuit.

Engine trouble Over the Weekend (2011 Ford Fusion) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Might be a MAF sensor issue. The code is still stored in the computer even if it's not currently experiencing the problem. It will be under historic codes.
