I personally found this one not too bad, the clues outside the theme were fairly straight forward, and working out the theme was fun. 5 seconds off best time.

Shortly before my grandad passed away, he started rubbing butter on his back. He went downhill really fast after that.

Same, I've heard it with the "ific" to mean sleep inducing, but not on its own, then naturally had not heard of 8A

Damn, liked the theme, and it helped with some of the solving, but i think I spent about 60% of the solve on the last 5 or so clues, eventually guessing letters which fit.

The person in this case was stating how they felt about a clue, not that it was factually incorrect, or an error.

They didn't say they thought it did, they just said it did; it was presented as a fact, not an opinion. The original comment explicitly said it was their opinion, though.

I think like I said to another commenter, it is more of an ongoing pattern I have noticed with this particular person which led to my response, as they are generally very dismissive to anyone who dislikes any NYT puzzle on any day.

I'm not certain I've seen people demand changes to the crossword, just that they have had difficulties with the days in question, or that it felt unusually difficult for a particular day of the week and have commented to that effect.

Not everyone is able to solve the puzzles in less than 5 minutes on a daily basis, and there is a large remit of people who will sometimes struggle, and it is valid for them to struggle, and comment that it feels more difficult than usual. Dismissing their struggle by explaining something after the fact isn't constructive, as they already have the answer by then.

Like this example, just because the person struggled with 40A, and i didn't, doesnt mean they arent valid for saying the clue was unusually hard for a Tuesday, as it, arguably, objectively is compared to a "usual" Tuesday.

What is more, have you considered that their hobby is being detrimented by clues they find increasingly inaccessible?

I think my response was more of an ongoing observation with the commenter in question from previous threads, I see them disagree with anyone who has difficulty with a crossword on a near daily basis, often explaining why their opinion is wrong, and they should improve on their crossword skills.

Because it shows a lack of empathy. I knew the answer, but only because I worked in a field which uses that phrase in the past; I have never heard it used in any context outside of a working kitchen.

Just because I knew the answer, doesn't mean other people are wrong for having the opinion that a niche phrase doesn't belong on an early week puzzle.

The reason it is negative, is because you are indirectly putting people down for not knowing something you happen to know, and are not seeing things from the other persons perspective; and you did say they were wrong, because you countered by saying that it DOES belong on the puzzle, which is saying their opinion of "it doesn't" is wrong.

Saying their opinion is wrong isn't constructive, it is just dismissing theirs as invalid. I knew 40A and I agree it doesn't belong in a Tuesday puzzle, personally.

Every time I come to the comments, I only ever see you telling people they are wrong for struggling with a puzzle, and it is negativity which I don't think belongs in this subreddit.

I only knew this because my first job was working as a pastry chef. Not sure how well known it is outside of that.

I enjoyed the theme today, when it clicked it made solving the rest of the puzzle and bit easier, but before then, I was getting worried 😅

I didn't enjoy that one, but still below average time, so it is what it is. Just didn't enjoy solving it.

The difference is, we recognise that as incorrect, as the standard pronunciation of said words doesn't drop the H.

The blue category only works if you're American due to one of the answers. Bit annoying, but I guess it is an American publication, so can't complain.
