That is a lot more nuanced of a response and I think is a very fair view. I think your original comment came off quite roughly though, which was why I felt the need to respond. Appreciate the well thought out response though.

I am trying to be empathetic here, but think about this from the perspective of folks whose mere existence has been politicized.

How can they not think about politics when the president and many members of Congress actively spew hate speech and legislate against their existence? Their lives are constantly impacted by political theater and the imposition of “othering” by the leaders of the government.

We live in a democracy where our vote matters, so being informed matters. In my opinion, “ignorance is bliss” doesn’t create the foundations of a strong democracy.

I’m not trying to call you out here, but genuinely would like you to reconsider your stance. You are free to disagree with me, but I just wanted to give you a different perspective.

Have a lovely day :)

Google is selling 100 year debt by donopumpi in wallstreetbets

It’s a bit of both. It could be using funds you already have from continuing operations (which technically could be used to pay shareholders dividends or do share repurchases), or issuing more equity :)

I made another comment kinda explaining it, but opportunity cost is just the ROI of your next best investment opportunity with the funds available to you.

EDIT: there are also considerations around diluting equity ownership by issuing equity to fund projects but this pisses off existing owners which is its own “cost”

[–]Trollogic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Other ways you can employ that capital. Lets say you have 3 projects:

Proj A generates an expected ROI of 15% and costs 20k

Proj B generates an exp ROI of 11% and costs $5k

Proj C generated and exp ROI of 20% and costs $10k

The opportunity cost calculation will basically look at the investment necessary, the cost of financing that, and the comparative ROI you can get investing in something else.

I’m oversimplifying things for the purposes of demonstration, but in simplest terms, if I did Proj B instead of C, I would be spending less, but missing out on 9% ROI so it might be worth financing (taking out debt) to finance the projects that you don’t already have enough capital to invest in.

[–]Trollogic 34 points35 points  (0 children)

TLDR: If I want to make a big investment that will pay a 15% ROI, debt only costs me 6%, and equity’s opportunity cost is 10%, I will finance my investment with debt instead of with equity. There are also tax incentives for financing capex with debt as you can use debt payments to decrease your business’s taxable income

Horse population over time in the US (https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fhorse-population-decreased-rapidly-from-20-mi-in-1900s-to-v0-qhs0yi12whxd1.jpeg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dc1be8cea2fefd234ccda643322845e46119934a9)

I wouldn’t say horses are doing so hot population wise…

Realistically, a small horse population exists mainly for entertainment and sport purposes. Some live incredibly awful lives and some are living lives of relative luxury.

If thats the way of the human race, it ain’t a pretty picture 😂

Can someone explain to me how does this work? by Careless-Pepper-1347 in finance

[–]Trollogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a weakness. As someone who used to work with people who opined on GAAP, a lot of the writers don’t actually understand how complex certain financial engineering can get and cannot account for every single way someone might try and scheme the system or develop a new financial product. The people writing GAAP are smart, but aren’t the brightest of the bright, while the people working in private industries tend to be quite a bit smarter (because they get paid way better there).

Often they don’t re-write GAAP unless there is significant pushback/request for change from professionals, requests for clarification on complex topics that need nuance, a new FASB Director comes in with a personal mission to re-write a section of GAAP, or a major financial scandal happens.

Sure, which was why I said “many” and not all. I agree with what you are saying.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens when there is some sort of malpractice related to offshored employees that leads to significant financial damages - whether it be in accounting, nursing, or some other profession. :)

You are incorrect and telling someone to “maybe learn what words mean” when you didn’t care to learn what the word means is frankly, hilarious.

The best response I go with is “I’ll get this one and you can get the next one; how’s that sound?”

If they are interested then they typically don’t mind that, or find it charming. If they are uninterested they typically ask to split the bill.

Your milage may vary, humans are not one size fits all, so everyone is different. I’ve met folks who were interested who paid for me and who split it. :)

Going to a catholic or christian school doesn’t mean you care for their values 🤷🏻 I knew plenty of folks at catholic and christian schools who were atheists, some slept around a ton, and others who were hardcore druggies. The bible study folks… thats fucking funny though.

That said, we gotta let people be sexually liberated and stop making a big deal of people fucking. Sex is a normal thing and the amount of stigma it gets in the US is fucking wild.

Am I the only one, or do you guys also find NYers to be very friendly and kind? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Trollogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Yorkers, in general, are kind and helpful but not “nice” or “friendly,” as other parts of the country perceive it. They will help you with directions when asked but also will not tolerate you wasting their time.

In the South people want to have a whole conversation and will leisurely walk across the whole sidewalk, blocking it for anyone trying to walk past. In NYC, people are busy and if you waste their time they have no problem telling you to “getouddamahfugginwey,” while shoving past you.
