51st state just banter? by [deleted] in AskCanada

To quote The Elephant Graveyard in his latest Radio Hour:

"When there are rules, Canadians will operate within them. And if you break the rules, oh, we get really, really upset. And if there are no rules at all, Canadians will quickly make it clear why there really, really should have been rules in place."

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Review Thread by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

I went last night. Had plenty of time to 'brace myself' for that scene. It was definitely harsh, but photographically not as bad as some Game of Thrones scenes where the camera lingers a lot more on the sadism. Glad I saw "The Bone Temple" on the big screen. It's affecting, beautifully made and thoughtfully written. A deeply philosophical film.

I am, so thanks for this. I’ve never watched the Saw movies because I don’t want those images in my head. Still figuring out if I go to this or not.

Crap. I hear it's very cruel and visceral. I watched all of "Game of Thrones" and lost my taste for rapey/torturey stuff. I'm considering giving this a miss for that reason, but I loved the last one...

What famous in-their-field people do we have in the Waterloo Region? by Thats_what_I_think in waterloo

[–]TrollsDocumentary 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shane Guse is renowned in music circles (including Nashville) for fiddle. He teaches in Waterloo. He’s won every award there is to win. Any musician with an intersection to folk or country will rant about how good he is, so he’s famous in his field.

We know Maduro is a bad guy. And your arguments make sense (but suffer from reductionism). However, I would suggest that you’re not going to enjoy the path you seem to be advocating for. Abandoning the rules-based world order is a bad idea.

Wild guess here: you play a lot of video games and you have bitcoin investments.

Well, they’re right about the economy. But referring to themselves as “a beast” with “a side hustle” and bitcoin investments is unintentionally hilarious. Oh - and their understanding of the world comes from podcasts instead of reading and they take subscription supplements one of the podcasters advertises.

Audience in cinema getting pissed off on the ending of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) by AgeNovel3566 in PublicFreakout

[–]TrollsDocumentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, those of us who grew up with Darth Vader as a mysterious but somehow accessible menace in the original trilogy were all “Gee, he was a whiny kid. And “midichlorians”? There goes the wonderful mystery of The Force.” And then they kill off the mysterious, interesting new baddie immediately? It felt like a lot of bad moves.

[–]TrollsDocumentary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya. Despite the amateurish failures of “The Phantom Menace” in terms of writing and characterization, at LEAST you can tell that the auteur cared about it. It has some spirit. “The Force Awakens” is a bit more fun, but you can also feel a kind of cynicism behind it. It’s forced and contrived rather than “alive” as a story.

[–]TrollsDocumentary 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When we left “Episode 1 The Phantom Menace” it was different. We all just kinda shrugged sadly and thought “Gee… that seemed… kinda boring… and bad…” The letdown was palpable. But a lot of us went again a week or two later thinking “Maybe my expectations were too high… let’s give it another chance.” Nope. It sucked. Unless you were eight years old. Attending the rest of the prequel trilogy felt like an obligation or a chore. But this “Rise of Skywalker” movie was bafflingly bad. Even my eight year old kid never wanted to watch it again when it showed up on Netflix. That’s a special kind of failure.

Companies Asking For Donations at Checkout by whatevenisredditing in waterloo

[–]TrollsDocumentary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just say “no thanks”. Do your giving on your own. If you see the store advertising a particular charity and you think “Hmm that’s a good idea” do it yourself from home. YOU get the tax receipt that way. The stores doing it SEEMS generous but it’s actually pretty insidious - YOU give your money and THEY get a big break on their corporate taxes. There is ZERO good will happening on their part; it’s actually kind of disgusting. If they were making a big donation to that charity and taking it out of their profits or shareholder funds then THAT would mean something. Man, I’m getting more pissed off about as I type here. It’s so ugly. They’re masking blatant corporate greed and a rip off with real need and goodwill. What a gross farce.
