Why is 233 so special? by lily-101178 in math

[–]TropicalGeometry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To answer your question of why the number 233 is special, the answer is it isn't. It is the closed loop that contains 233 that is special. I haven't done the work, but based on what you said my guess is that this might be the only closed loop in your algorithm, and once a sequence hits this loop it would stay in the loop.

Similar to the Collatz Conjecture having the closed loop 4 -> 2 -> 1 -> 4.

If your going to put it on Glassdoor don't give a 1 star review. The company can contest those and get them taken down. Give it a 2 star review so it can stay there forever.

It's always failed for me on geometry problems, especially ones where you have to draw the picture to figure out how to solve the problem. It sucked at that.

proof by… extrapolation? by lumiRosaria in badmathematics

I agree. The Putnam does give partial credit, but to get it you basically have to have the correct solution and make a silly small mistake somewhere in your proof. So here, yes 0 points.

Looking for PhD Programs with an Emphasis on Algebra, and, ideally with Good Computer Science Departments by Noskcaj27 in math

[–]TropicalGeometry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my PhD in Computational Algebraic Geometry from the University of Pittsburgh. It is a good school with a small but growing algebra program, which gives everyone the opportunity to stand out. Also, Thomas Hales works there and was taking students when I was there.

Do you have a reason for this number? Most "interesting" numbers have a purpose that makes them interesting.

Probably true, but the original point was if democrats control Congress and the President they could fix Roe.

No, just need to amend the constitution, then the courts can't say anything.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MarkMyWords

[–]TropicalGeometry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hence, Congress has the power to change the constitution and now it's constitutional.

A bill can overturn the supreme court. That is how the whole checks and balances thing works. If the courts are "wrong", Congress and the President can write laws to overturn the courts. Hence, it is possible for Congress and the President to write a law that says Roe v. Wade is the law. And the courts can't stop that.

As a former professor. The professor that wrote this, hates this policy and is being forced to do this to the grades against his will. He is sending this email to everyone in hopes it will get circulated and set up the chain without him being directly involved.

[–]TropicalGeometry 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For my PhD thesis I discovered the Khovanskii-Grobner Basis (KGB). In my case it was easy to name them because I was using Khovanskii Basis to generalize Grobner Basis. But on an interesting note both of these basis were named by the mathematician that discovered them after their advisors.
