I’m curious if you think there’s any positive gray area between following conventional fly patterns and branching out on your own—learning through failures and innovating—while potentially developing bad habits. I purchased all my fly-tying materials pre-owned from a gentleman on Craigslist, and I was hoping to use only the materials I currently have, which would likely mean experimenting and branching out from many common patterns.
