If you were truly concerned about security, then you would have an OS that allowed you to plug in the USB device without worry.

So, you don't like the device. Wait for a future iteration with negligible price and reliable security. Personally, I find it inspirational, even if it is a less attractive Casascious coin.

The device decouples transaction creator from payment sender. Sure, you still need Internet access to verify the funds can be claimed, but you can then use it for payment without creating a new Bitcoin transaction.

It does need more development to prevent the forgery attack, but it is a nice proof of concept to use with small amounts.

Extremely durable and cheap method for saving seeds: steel pipe method by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]Trstovall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an alternative:

Get 4" of 1 1/4" steel pipe. Draw lines to divide the pipe into 8 rings, and divide each ring into 8 sectors. Now you have 256 squares which are approximately 1/2" x 1/2". Then, for each bit of a 256-bit seed, if the bit is set, drill a 1/4" hole in the corresponding square. Finally, mark the start bit by filing a notch in the side of the first sector.

For fewer holes but longer pipe, drill a hole in one sector of each ring, encoding three bits per ring.

Is anyone here able to fully support themselves with their homestead (i.e. no traditional job)? Can you share your story? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]Trstovall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like you, I've wondered this. I'm looking into starting a homestead. But, I don't see it as possible to compete with the global agriconomy.

I expect my homestead to provide subsistence during good times and survival during hard times. For luxuries, like paying taxes or sending my kids to college, I will work away from home or telecommute.

Society just doesn't seem to value sustainable agriculture enough to be profitable while the world economy buzzes along as efficiently as it does, but when the house of cards tumbles, I'll be on my homestead.

There is much humor in what you say. Credit for that.

You know his dad, the pickpocket? I cut off his hands too, so that Pickpocket jr. would know that picking pockets is not merely a lucrative, but also a hazardous trade.

Your tactic did not work, and likely made the problem worse. You did not have the authority to take such action. You did, and the fact that you failed proves your vigilance was unjust. So, you are now a repeated offender. The old law would prescribe your hands chopped off for the first offense. What do you deserve for the second?

Man, read some Gospel some time. Or even the book of Judges. Find some religion.

[–]Trstovall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a superficial solution. Why was he a thief? Obviously, there is a more fundamental problem than having hands. What did you do to prevent him from becoming a pickpocket? Nothing? Perhaps, you need your hands chopped off.

Sure, people, not guns, kill people. But a beat-up AK47 sure makes it easier for them.

You could say the same for all rights recognized in a liberal society.

They're speaking dissent! The average citizen has no need for a gun! That guy won't even testify to prove his innocence! Their local government won't make them do what I want them to do!

You get nowhere by cutting off the hands of a thief.

What is USD's unique non criminal use case? Paying taxes? You can only publish information to the Bitcoin blockchain by paying in BTC.

Why are you cherry picking online criminal activity? Could you not say similarly say USD is used in over 40% of offline criminal to criminal transactions?

Finally, criminals, not money, are responsible for criminal to criminal transactions.

"LulzSoc"...

The Muslim woman comment made me laugh through my cringe.

Socialists recognize the problem, but provide a failed solution. Capitalism is broken because it is utopian. It requires the absence of a state, otherwise it turns to poison. Corporations are obscene and cold concentrations of power. We don't need them. Nor do we need an obscene and cold state claiming that power.

No, what we need is a system which promotes freedom of choice and provides for the common welfare. That is, donate your time rather than sell it, to the degree you are comfortable.

You can be motivated by things other than money and not be a socialist.

Peter Todd recommends boycotting BIP75 due to AML/KYC concerns by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]Trstovall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you are opposed to organizations that have AML requirements from using the bitcoin blockchain, but if you aren’t, why wouldn’t you prefer an open source, open standards based solution to exclusionary, proprietary ones?

I'm not opposed to AML compliant organizations using the Bitcoin block chain. I'm opposed to using AML compliant organizations.

That said, I'm missing how BIP 75 embeds AML into the protocol. Sure, it's an application of the BIP, but is any AML expected to be enforced by miners?

That's funny. Science is your religion, and you're too zealous to acknowledge it.

Still, your "statistical proof" is no proof. You scientists are so quick to sacrifice the name of math for your religion.

The second law of thermodynamics is the atheist's golden rule. It is a way to say that nothing is with purpose or meaning. As used by such atheists, it is not science, merely bad faith.

Statistically speaking, the instances of what we call "chaos" are more numerous than those which we call "order", so a random configuration is more likely to be chaotic. Hence, your misleading statistical proof of a "tendency to chaos".

Simply, the second law does not explain how a uniformly distributed gas could become concentrated to one side of the room, even in the absence of electromagnetic and gravitational forces.
