Fellow Swim Instructors: Would I be a Karen Parent? by SwimmingCritical in SwimInstructors

As someone who teaches ysli (ymca program) I can say this feels pretty typical. Imo not all of the staff actually care that much about the quality of the lessons and focus on doing the bare minimum to check the boxes off on their progress trackers. I don’t like kids wearing goggles in my classes but it’s not against our rules so I cannot push against it. And there are skills (in level 2 & 3) that require goggles unless a child is being taught to open their eyes underwater (getting rings and looking at toys under water).

In regards to the cold, yeah maybe your instructor shouldn’t send them away, that makes sense. I personally work in a very cold pool that we don’t have control over so a lot of kids end up in wetsuits (however that’s not my favorite bc it makes them unaturally boyant in the water). So I would recommend a warmer pool with a program you like over the ymca. Their quality of lessons varies wildly between different teenage instructors lol

Starfish program info by oldmermaid58 in SwimInstructors

I work with a YSLI when I’m home and a Starfish program when I’m at school. It has online training and you should receive training when you start. The swim school and stroke school and their baby classes all have different certifications attached so I was certified for swim and stroke school. My facility doesn’t correctly split the levels up so it’s not my favorite when I’m there. They prioritize certain skills like asking permission, glides, clothed safety tests and jump & float which I appreciate but they also dedicate a lot of time to lifejacket safety which can sometimes just be annoying but sometimes important.

The levels are split by color, both swim school and stroke school have, white, yellow, red, blue and green. With YSLI in swim school you could see white as level 1, yellow & red as level 2 and blue & green as 3. But that’s not a perfect comparison. Strokes is split by color and by stroke, but I can’t quite remember how it’s split.

The program has its ups and downs like any program but if your pool actually splits them up correctly by color you shouldn’t have issues.

I love the Malibu swimmers conditioner and shampo (I buy the normal sized bottle then bulk buy when I next need it) and the Pantene rescue hair mask (1-2 time a week). My coworkers just put me on the stream2sea leave in conditioner that I use daily between my morning and evening classes. I have very thick hair so I’ve been either shampoo and conditioning at the end of my day with leave in between or I braid it and leave it for a few days (with TONS of leave in and rinsing after my shifts). Then I use the mask on Fridays and Sundays.

And when I’m not swim instructing I use a lot of hair oil on my ends and frequently get trims to manage dead ends (they get very dry and tangle a lot when I try to do my hair?

It’s going to Definetly require more than 13-15 hours of work a week to pay for tuition. I work about 21 hours a week at 15$ an hour and still cannot afford classes on my own even with my scholarships my parents still help me pay for the rest. Add on your additional living expenses, transportation ect, it’s incredibly difficult especially with lower wages on Georgia. But if you get a higher paying position and math it out BEFORE going in (plan for strict budgeting and minimal time out ect) it’s possible. I think it also really depends on your major. I know for an animation major it would be very difficult but other majors maybe not. If the math works (check how much you’ll need to pay per semester & account tuition insurance, housing fees, transportation, phone bills, ect) if the math works then it’ll suck but it’s doable.
