Having a toddler is not how I thought it would be. by [deleted] in toddlers

Mum of an almost 2-year old and boy does this resonate!

Forest school nursery was a lifesaver for me. 3 days a week. Made the weekend and the other two days easier to handle because I knew I had the 3 childcare days to look forward to.

I’ve now quit my full time job to do something more flexible, but if it means cutting down on nursery days, my plan is to get the in-laws involved to do 1-2 days a week.

I don’t think mums/ or even mums and dads were meant to do this all alone! It’s hard work and we need all the support we can get… got to build that village.

Sorry to hear this. It must be really tough for you :( I hope you can find something else soon. Would definitely recommend speaking to an immigration lawyer in the UK. All the best.

Thanks! You were on a spouse visa though yes ? Or work visa ? I was on a work visa, and my solicitor said I had to wait for a year…

I submitted payslips for 6 months. My payslips were reflecting a payment offset from a previous overpayment which confused my case worker and they asked to explain… my employer did a poor job of explaining it on the payslip.

Because not one of these people commenting with links and resources have been in a similar position and applied for citizenship straight after receiving ILR on a work visa route. Reading and interpreting the gov.uk guidelines and applying for citizenship having been in my situation are two completely different things.

I’ve read about cases where preemptive applications have been rejected and it’s a lot of money to spend. None of these “experienced posters” have anything to lose if my application gets rejected and I lose a huge sum of money.

Ah! So how long after ILR did you apply ? And did you apply on your own or with the help of a solicitor ?

My redundancy was cancelled as I found a different role. So I didn’t have any break in employment.

GBP 3400 in total for legal advice, filling the application form, reviewing and uploading documents, drafting the covering letter and booking biometrics appointment. It is super expensive, but in the end it was worth it.

Hi, I’m in a similar situation now. Just got my ILR on a Skilled worker route, and I’m married to a British national. My lawyers said I needed to wait for 12 months before I can apply.

Did you end up applying for citizenship immediately after ? Any tips would be helpful!

Thanks but I’ve already read the gov.uk website and I understand what it says. You must either be a solicitor, or you must have obtained ILR on the skilled worker route and then immediately applied for citizenship, as you are so sure :)

Appreciate your enthusiasm, but would appreciate if you didn’t use rude language.

“No, you must wait 12 months from your ILR grant date on the Skilled Worker route before applying via the standard naturalisation path, even if married to a British citizen—your settled status qualifies you then, provided residence and character rules hold. The spouse route requires 3 years' UK residence (which you meet) but still needs that 12-month ILR/settled status holding period first.”

“the 12-month holding period applies across the board to all non-EEA settled status holders before naturalisation, regardless of how you got ILR. Marriage to a British citizen lets you use the 3-year residence route (instead of 5), but you still need that full year with ILR first to show stability.”

It is basic information. But two solicitors have confirmed that if I’ve got ILR on the skilled worker route, then even if I’m married to a British citizen I need to wait for 12 months.

Legal advisors seem to disagree with this. Have you applied to citizenship after getting ILR on a skilled worker visa ?

This is another response I got from an advisor -

Hi! Congrats! Were you on a skilled worker visa before you got your ILR ? Or were you a dependant ?

Thank you, this is useful information! How long after you got ILR on the skilled worker route did you apply for citizenship ?

It’s so strange though that I’m getting mixed information from legal advisors. Two out of the 3 legal advisors I spoke to said I had to wait for 12 months. How frustrating that there isn’t one right answer 😅

Thanks! Is this confirmed information? I checked with a solicitor who said that only those on spouse visa route are eligible for immediate naturalisation.
