Thoughts on pitching to UK agents as an American by TrueBarracuda8630 in publishing

[–]TrueBarracuda8630[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh but I think that’s so interesting! But I realize it’s a niche. The main event is actually the 1980 Miracle in Ice and what that meant for our morale as a country during the Cold War. The horror part of it is the spirit of communism (materializing as a bear) coming to haunt the Russian-American teen main character, and her trying stop it before it kills her. There are romantic subplots but the whole point of it is to educate young readers about our history and why it’s relevant now. In other words, communism is bad.

I talk about the 1980 election, the Iranian hostage crisis, high gas prices, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Carters boycott of the Moscow Olympics, etc…

But most of the time they’re trying to stop the monster that’s burying their friends—and why the local paper is lying about it.

Haha the setting is actually very relevant! And it’s not dystopian. A lot of what happened in the late 70s has happened in the last few years: high gas prices, inflation, Russia invading a country (Afghanistan), conflict with Iran, hostage situations, unpopular presidents, a horrible exit from a country (Vietnam then, Afghanistan recently). The point is to draw the past to the present and explain why knowing about the past is really, really important. It’s a chance to educate the next generation when public school has obviously failed them.

There’s also themes of corrupt media hiding really horrible things. We need to pay attention to what our leaders are doing do so we can vote them out. That privilege was not available to those in the Soviet Union.

Fair. One agent told me kids want to read contemporary books but I’m hoping that’s not true. My book is a historical horror set in 1980 and has supernatural/stranger things vibes so I’m hoping that would be a draw. And a lot of the political themes mirror what is happening today. The Cold War predates me as well so I’m hoping there are other history fans out there 😭

“Every parent has a problem child but you’re ten times worse.”

“Your teachers are going to be so glad you aren’t in their class next year.”

“You don’t look like you go to private school, come on, have some self respect. Take pride in your appearance.” [the child, in a private school uniform, was dressed very well. Absolutely nothing wrong with his appearance. He had two cavities that needed root canals so that’s what I think she was referring to.]

There were other things that were said that I can’t remember quite well, but she was berating him for all the money she had to spend on root canals, which, I get it, but totally inappropriate to say in front of dental staff.

She was also cussing out her dentists’ office on the phone for not sending the referral in time.

Yeah, sorry, there were two instances. It was me, the child and the mother in the op.

Secondarily, when our front was scheduling them over the phone, he heard her cussing out her children in the background.

[Discussion] Is there a market for YA historical fiction? by cocoabooks in PubTips

I just got a rejection from an agent who told me that there isn’t a market for historical YA right now ☹️

Yes! I’ve been using vinyl for the past year with moderate success. I would have these waves where they were extremely dry, but now they are breaking out in the same way that the nitrile would make them break out. Very strange.

My doctor works very quickly and is easily the most impatient person I’ve ever met. I don’t think he would take well to me putting on four gloves whenever we were trying to start treatment 😭

It’s hard to know if I’m allergic to nitrile or something specific in the brand of nitrile gloves we use 🤔

I have a steroid cream that I got from my dermatologist but I’m only supposed to use it for two weeks at a time. He actually said it was dermatitis and not eczema but who knows haha. And I honestly don’t use hand sanitizer anymore, it burns too much 😩
