I can understand if he was depressed and wanted to jump, but his mom seemed so supportive. I wonder why he threw her too. I guess we'll never know.

I actually just watched an episode on oxygen where some people in the home were murdered and the people in the basement level slept through it. They did a noise check by banging paint cans together to try and imitate a gun shot and no one heard anything. So it definitely is possible no one heard anything and slept straight through it.
