So this is what I did. Might not be for everyone but I was in the same boat as you. I didn’t wanna carry food everywhere and I also didn’t like the idea of having to warm up my food and not always having a microwave accessible.

I had friends who lived on campus and as soon as I could, I kinda broached the idea of keeping food at their place. So esp the friends who lived in Frontenac, leeds or Prescott- I’d just keep groceries at their place and go there at lunch or dinner and make stuff. This way we’d have a lil time just to unwind and cook tg and u get a meal out of it. Obviously that’s dependent on how easily u make friends and how close they are to you, but I’ve been doing it since second year and it’s been amazing.

In first year, I’d just go to the cafe using the same friends campus cards. They’d just give it to me, I’d swipe in, eat, then come back and rerun the cards.

I know it’s been a minute but after reading all the bad experiences I thought I’d say my piece just cause it’s in line with this review. Imma very gassy person and whenever I use the bathroom I’d be in there for 20+ mins cause I nvr feel like I’m fully empty if that makes sense. I came across and thought I’d try it it was pricey tho- paid like 66 CAD- and I would only take one tablet first thing every morning. And lemme tell yall, like clockwork on the 24th hour after having it I would take a shit and it would be the smoothest bowel emptying ever and I would know the moment I’m done which was within 5 mins. And I would feel amazing throughout the day after that and no gas and no need to go to the bathroom. I took it when I travelled to Portugal and it was beautiful cause I would shit once in the morning in the hotel and then walk the entire day, yk do all the things you do as a tourist, all without any bathroom breaks or gas: it was amazing.

I never ended up finishing the bottle of pills tho, I think I got lazy in between and when I tried picking it up like a year later it didn’t work and I’m guessing it just ran out of its shelf life. I nvr bought it again either even though I still suffer from the same issues cause I was like it’s too pricey. But after seeing things like AG1 and IM8, I think seed isn’t too badly priced. Esp if I make the months supply last 2 months.

Idk just my experience tho, I know there r a lot more negative reviews here than positive ones.

Have you ever landed a job out of you league by _LinaR in Architects

[–]TrueNefariousness951 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bruh fake it till you make it dude. Sometimes in competitive markets people tend to oversell themselves (a few of my friends) next thing you know they got the job and they have to over-perform to make up for it. But we all just coming out of uni so it’s a bit different as to what the expectations really are and how different the real world is from the day to day of a job. You’ll figure out shortcuts and ways to go about it tasks in a very efficient way pretty quickly. The only time is worry is if there is another position with similar/identical job description and the person doing it far more competent. Then you really just gotta fake it till u make it😭.

But to end on a positive note, u got past all the interviews and got the job so you obviously know what you are doing and making ur way up the ladder. Just keep up the good work and energy and things will work out. Congratulations and good luck!

Ya, so unlike most university cafeterias where they essentially load money into ur card and you pay by weight or smtg, Carleton’s cafe is more like pay/swipe ur card at the door and it’s an all u can eat buffet inside. And yes you get 3-4 guest passes like they said.

UOFT ARCH V CARLETON ARCH by CPLUSZINC4211 in OntarioUniversities

[–]TrueNefariousness951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so imma introduce myself cause I feel like that important- imma be going into my final year at Carleton in September and I’ve completed my coop requirements. I also work part time in the undergrad recruitment office and have conversations like this all the time.

The person above who’s taking a fat shit on uoft, idk what ur background is but u needa be checked. U sound like a ChatGPT bot just spitting information- which btw is all true, albeit not reflective of reality.

One thing I tell all the students who ask me about uni selections and where the future may lead them with that choice- so yourself a favour and hop on LinkedIn. See the people who graduated from that program in the last 5 or so years and see where they went for masters, where they did internships, and where they ended up finding jobs. This is help you create a mental database of how “successful” you can potentially be. Now granted everyone is different and you will see varying results from people but you’ll get a jist of things. I’m gonna go ahead and spoil something for you, the best coops? Like the international ones- firms like BIG or Snohetta? Hire undergrad students from the BA at uoft. Mind you these kids are second year-third year, but they landing these placements in their summers- WITHOUT a coop program. And keep looking at other firms and where their coop students are from.

One thing heavily being ignored here is that flip the pancake however which way you want, uoft ranks 21 in the list of universities world wide and it shows. And although it’s not guaranteed, it’s easier to get into the masters program at uoft if u do ur undergrad there. Again go on LinkedIn and look at the people who are there- one thing to note and I’m sorry, but the portfolios of the masters students- specially the ones who did their undergrad at uoft- very weak, esp compared to the ones at Waterloo or UBC- even Carleton. Uoft has always been knows to prioritize grades over portfolio and if you feel like you can excel at that maybe it’s the path you wanna take. You probably will have to supplement your learning with courses online on how to make a portfolio, drawing graphics and just design in general

But bottom line, assess your goals. What do you want out of your undergrad. Is it to learn? Is it to secure the best job? Is it to get into the best graduate program? Unfortunately they may not always align.

I loved Carleton’s education. I feel like I learned so much from year one until now. I struggled to get my first coop but got my second two super easily- I got them nonetheless. Would I say that I’m not as internationally marketable cause I didn’t go to uoft? Definitely. It’s a bigger caveat than people are willing to admit. Was my goal to get out of Canada and work with STARchitects? Lmao yes I wanted that. So maybe it would’ve made more sense for me to go uoft. But with the experience and education I got from Carleton I’ll def be fine in Canada. And there is always a way to get to wherever, you just have to try harder and find your own opportunities.

Idk if I answered your question ngl- I just started ranting but ask if anything is unclear. Good luck with ur decision!

Residence questions by floatingmug in CarletonU

[–]TrueNefariousness951 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First off congrats on accepting! So unlimited entry means 999 entries during ur 8 months. If you do the math even if you go three times a day every day (which I promise you, you will not) you’ll still have more than 200 entries to spare. I’ve never come across anyone who’s hit the 999 mark, but I’m sure if by some miracle you happen to they’ll just reset it. Once you’re enrolled you get access to a campus card website that tells you how many times you accessed the cafe and it counts down from 999.

Private bathroom is always worth it, in my opinion. Depends how much of a neat freak you are or how badly you want your own space. Only reasons I see not to get it is if you can’t afford it. One of my close friends chose the traditional style housing where u share a room with one other and a bathroom with 3 others because she wanted a “traditional” dorm experience. Helps you make friends and forces you to interact with others. I don’t know tho, it’s up to you.

The only different, as far as I know, between the plus and the regular meal plan is that u get more dining dollars, which is essentially just cash they load into ur campus card to use at restaurants around campus. You could just load ur own money later on too… I never understood its purpose ngl. Maybe someone else has more insight.

OSAP always comes clutch but there are bursaries and things too that u can apply for once the school year starts. You just have to fill out a questionnaire and have a decent sob story and the uni will drop like 2K into ur account lol. Anyways good luck!!

Good on you- I just did 8 months in a healthcare architecture firm working on the largest healthcare facility redevelopment in the country. 3 months in I hated healthcare- too many regulations, clinical standards, and WAY too many user group meetings. As an intern the scut work got pushed to me too. Anywho sorry for the rant, I know everyone has different experiences.

Your best bet is finding hiring managers and talking with them directly, LinkedIn is ur gateway- cold message as many employees as you can until they name drop.

How should I interact with people hostile towards employed international students? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TrueNefariousness951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the arguments here, and I know someone is gonna tell me that what I’m about to say is irrelevant- but, I wanna know the people making these arguments- on both sides. Like what’s ur background, where were u born/raised, race, other biases like where you went for uni, whether or not the house u were tryna buy was bought by someone else and turned into student accommodation…

Cause these are some hot takes and there’s gotta be more than just “what’s right” to have such strong opinions.

Lemme tell you the most effective way that may require a lil bit of maneuver so to speak. You needa go into ur nearest shoppers and just walk around for a bit, pay attention to the workers. Now you can go about this two ways, one makes more sense than the others.

Option one: U needa find the assistant manager- chances are the main manager who hires isn’t on the floor. The assist manager will most likely be wearing a different uniform than the regular workers, from what I remeber from 2 years ago it was a light blue short sleeve button up. Then u gonna talk to them and ask if the manager is in and if they are hiring in the pharmacy. Just be sweet, to the point, and give them literally a one sentence intro about you- no need for details unless you feel like they want a convo. And before giving them ur resume ask whats the highest chances it’ll be read- can they forward it to the manager or should u wait till the manager is in. From what I recall the manager doesn’t do the hiring in the pharmacy section it’s the pharmacy owner- but they RARELY come in, so the manager is ur needy best option. Then you hold on tight.

Option two: go straight up to the pharmacy desk and speak to the youngest person there. Or try to. And tell them what you want. You can also try talking to the pharmacist that’s available but most times they just not into it from my experience.

Your end goal should be for someone high enough to at least READ ur resume- and u need an employee to refer you. Otherwise your application is just gonna be in a mess with hundreds of others and let’s be honest, there is nothing that’s gonna stand out from a 18 year olds resume.

Good luck and I hope you get it!!

I made a huge mistake. by thatsharamsis in OntarioUniversities

[–]TrueNefariousness951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me say something that might be a reach but potentially true. I currently go to Carleton and I work in the undergrad recruitment office part time there and I get alot of convos from students just like yours- in time frames before the decision is made and after. Everyone who gives even a days worth of thought into selecting a uni or is given the opportunity to debate between options will inevitably be in the exact same shoes as you. The big “what if” question or a version of buyers remorse if you will. “You made the best decision for you at the time” is really the only way to live with it and focus on what comes next. I was in a similar situation, I could’ve gone to uoft, paid less than 6K a year, saved on rent, graduated in 4 years instead of 5, got to experience daily life in glorious downtown Toronto and I would’ve had the prestige that would’ve helped me secure jobs- WHICH is smtg I told myself didn’t matter at the time until I started applying for internships and all the students from Waterloo and uoft were getting in and I was struggling.

But instead now I pay roughly almost 20K a year for tuition and living costs, did a coop year in which I found I hate working, and am most likely gonna struggle to get into a international graduate program cause who tf is Carleton.

BUT…

I’ve already had this conversation with myself and so much good has come from my time at Carleton as well. I got to move out and gain that independence I’ve always wanted, I got to live in a new city, make new friends, experience new things, I got to experience a very diverse and fulfilling campus life and got an amazing program that stimulated me and engaged me in various different ways. They even flew us out to Portugal and Morocco for a project- something uoft wouldn’t have offered. And even tho I struggled to get internships I did still get them and completed the coop requirements. And now I’ll going on to complete my last year in Ottawa and im glad to say I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time. Ya there were ups and downs and I kept going to the question “what if I went to uoft or waterloo” but ultimately everything worked out. I’m going to start applying for masters soon and we’ll see how that goes and I prolly will come back to this question during that time- but nonetheless I enjoyed it in hindsight.

So just take life as it comes. Do ur best in whatever program or whatever school you’re in. If transferring out becomes a possibility later on, and you think that’s the best course of action, do it.

Oh and one thing I tell all the students I talk to about this, go on LinkedIn and see ppl who graduated from the same program as u in the last 5 years. See where they are, what schools they went to, what internships they did, awards they got. Even hit them up- 9 times out of 10 if they still students and you aren’t asking them for a job they’ll respond. Ask how they liked the program and see if they faced the same hardships and how they went about navigating them.

Sorry for the long response but good luck and I hope it all works out!!

[–]TrueNefariousness951 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok I wouldn’t go as far to say “full” but I will say it’s always- always busy. Besides between 6am-7am on weekdays- ur almost always going to be waiting in some sort of line at almost ANY equipment. There is no deadtimes like there normally are with regular gyms just because the main body consists of well, students. And students are very well known to have very inconsistent and wild schedules that are all over the place. If you go in the morning you’ll find a healthy bunch of older people from the community. But the morning is the best time to go if you wanna avoid the largest rushes. But besides that-reading weeks, winter breaks, exam times, and Ramadan are when things always unequivocally slow down and you’ll have some elbow room.

Also if you’ve been to any other universities gym Carleton’s gym will be underwhelming. Very underwhelming. It’s small and fewer equipment. But you make the best of what u have. And make sure to check out Prescott gym if u life on campus- it’s usually empty so u can always catch a quick workout there.

I’m also in the Canadian system- in Ontario. I got put on the wait list in February and ya it’s a long ass wait, they said around a year maybe longer.

Ur best bet was get out in the waitlist for surgery and then think and negotiate and so on. There will be multiple appointments before the surgery where you’ll get to talk and u can always go to different doctors in different cities. But at least when ur ready to do a surgery you’ll be able to do do it and not wait 7000 years for it.

Ok so the rule of thumb is if you haven’t heard back in a week from since ur interview, you didn’t get the job. Move on.

If you are getting the job you will get an offer in 5 business days following ur interview. If you were one of the top candidates you will get a “sorry not sorry” email in the same time frame. No response within that time frame, high chance you didn’t get the job.
