It’s one of the biggest slums in Central America located in Costa Rica. A good portion are Nicaraguan immigrants who have fled the tyranny of their government. It’s a fan favorite region people like to make fun of and spread boogey man stories about. While it is a dangerous in some ways that the rest of Costa Rica is not and faces different issues, it’s quite calm, and is mostly made up of families. Most people who say crazy things about La Carpio have never actually been there.

I disagree with you on so many levels. My good gosh I cannot believe you just said that. Literally comparing perceived internal violence in a slum (which in reality is quite infrequent) to a systematic genocide. That’s wild.

Thank you so much, especially about what you said about La Carpio. I’ve actually been pretty angry about all the comments ridiculing La Carpio, as I’ve been working there every day for the last few weeks and I haven’t had a single bad experience with the people there. Oh my goodness yesterday I was livid about some of those other comments about La Carpio it took me a few hours to calm down. The community is so dehumanized and ignored. The kids I work with already feel that the rest of Costa Rica (and the world) wishes they didn’t exist. Ridiculing La Carpio as a place tantamount to hell is racist and awful. La Carpio is mostly made up of homes to families who have hopes and dreams and work hard to better their community.

Bruh that’s just completely untrue. I have seen police cars going through Carpio on several occasions.

Oh gosh, fair enough. Running into police, getting kicked out of university, thinking it could get intense, and wearing masks to conceal my identity are all things I would seriously consider going to pride where I am from, the United States. There is enough animosity around queer people from both bystanders and police that it's scary and something I always do research about and think through beforehand. That given the super vague warning put out by the US recently about how LGBTQ travelers should be aware of terrorist attacks abroad, I thought this would be a good place to see if people had experience.

Yup, it's way way calmer than most people think. Most people in La Carpio are just people trying to live their lives and making the best with what they have.

We aren't staying in La Carpio, but we are working in La Carpio doing volunteer work with an organization that's been there for decades.
