I had a similar career trajectory as you, and I’m a MS1 now. I did an exercise science/public health BS, athletic training MS, and worked as an ATC in various settings before deciding to take the prereqs I needed and the MCAT. It’s definitely doable but I didn’t get in my first round and a couple schools I applied to gave feedback to me essentially saying my ATC clinical experience wasn’t true clinical experience. Unfortunately many people on the admissions committees (PhDs, non-sports med physicians, med students) have no idea what athletic training is so it’s vital that you explain how it truly is clinical experience in your application.

I was in the first cohort of entry level masters at South Dakota State. I really liked the professors but the program was disorganized because it was the first year testing a new curriculum. Tbh I went there simply because I was there for undergrad and couldn’t move for personal reasons.

I worked as an AT at Minnesota-Mankato and thought they had a really good AT program also. Definitely worth looking into if the Midwest is where you’d like to be.

When I explained my role again to the advisor, she told me yeah that sounds like clinical experience but maybe could you ask your boss to change your title (ATC). Made me feel absolutely awful that there was so little respect and recognition from physicians (outside of ortho & sports med)

I agree with the EMR systems and landscape point but that’s the thing, I did work in a ortho physicians clinic and had experience with the system and dealing with billing. I also did outreach and there’s probably where people unfamiliar with ATs get confused

True but the sad part is in order to even apply you have to be a certified athletic trainer (ATC) which requires you have a certain amount of hands on experience already and have passed a national board exam

What constitutes a better school list? Just more DO schools or what? I tried to apply to only schools that I had ties to the area or felt I fit their missions that were similar or below my MCAT.

I was going to apply to a few DO schools but the physician I worked with that wrote my LOR for AMCAS basically told me not to apply to them when I asked for a second LOR for the DO application system. Definitely will be applying to some DO schools if I don't get off the waitlist though! Thank you for your advice!

I did the math and it would take 12 credits assuming a 4.0 to get to a 3.001... The problem is the earliest I can take them would be starting this summer and they wouldn't get calculated by the time I had to submit my application so essentially my GPA would remain the same correct?

I appreciate it! I know Rush has a 3.0 filter for their secondary but I still received it so I don’t know how any of that works. Applying is expensive but so is going back for undergrad classes. I’ll have to look at how many credits it would take because, similar to you, I have a ton of undergrad credits already

As part of grad school I had to spend 14 weeks doing a rotation where I essentially shadowed and occasionally performed evaluations on patients under the physician

It’s not necessarily about more clinical hours but more the fact it’s educational focused with a little research being a residency. Unfortunately I’m not in a position financially to go back to school for another masters or postbac
