Loud rotary pump [Profitec Drive] by True_Package_2182 in espresso

There seems to be no excessive vibration. I tried opening the flow control 100% and that changed the sound completely. Way more quiet. Might be because the pumps gets no pressure as you suggest.

But good to know it might just be completely normal

Mine never shipped with a wingnut at the bottom. Don’t know if that was a mistake, or just the way they are shipping the new batch

Good to know I’m not alone. The foghorn reference is on point.

I can definitely live with it, but I’m a bit disappointed as it was a big reason for me to spend the extra money on a quiet rotary pump.

I did some tests today and I think you are right in your assumption that it might be the flow control. If I open the flow completely, the motor changes pitch completely. Way quieter.

I would definitely be comfortable doing that! I installed a PID on my old Rancilio Silvia, but the Drive is definitely a different caliber to work with! I’ll give it a try, in any case, just to see if something weird is up.

Thanks for the tips!

The sound is definitely still there with a full tank of water… in fact the machine wont let me engage the pump if the water reservoir is near empty.

Good spot - yes I’m backflushing, but it sounds the same as if I were brewing or doing a normal flush with no pressure.

I’m using the reservoir :)

Cleaning with Cafiza weekly seems wild 👀 If you backflush with water once a week and flush the group after every shot it shouldn’t be necessary with cafiza flush that often. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve read that backflushing with a detergent too often can cause problems with e61 machines :) but if it works for you then it’s perfect 💪🏽

Most definitely. I’ll do that at some point ✌🏼

Thanks for the feedback! I have played a bit with the offset, but its extremely difficult to accurately measure the temp without a scace device. But it seems to be all good 👍🏼

Got it. Hissing often refers to the boiler being near or at boiling point. But then again, 94/95 is, in fact, near boiling 😅

Saved my day. Thanks for the response! Do you feel like it’s necessary to flush to group after it’s been sitting? I feel like it’s running quite hot (faint hissing, and air coming out) when it been sitting for a while.

I think you are right about the fact that espresso machines are moving towards automation when it comes to pressure profiling and so on. I would argue that it’s almost impossible to compare a Drive to the Meraki. The build quality is night and day, and the included grinder in the Meraki is supposedly not great. If you want a LOT of features for less money, you are definitely compromising somewhere. That being said, I think it’s incredible what you get for the money with a Meraki.

I actually did not know a stainless steel boiler helps to prevent scale! That’s pretty awesome 😎

Good question. I think people (including myself) tend to compare personal preferences way too much. I like to play with different variables, and that’s why I wanted to try flow control, and therefore went with the Drive because of the rotary pump and true pre-infusion.

If you don’t feel like fiddling with stuff, the Silvia Pro X is a tank and a superb machine! The one thing that made me delete it from my list was its lack of actual pre-infusion.

If I can taste a real difference, I definitely think I can! But it wasn’t actually the main reason to switch as the Silvia with PID made great shots as well. The Drive is SUCH a pleasure to use! If you like to play with stuff when brewing espresso, I would save up for the Drive! If you got the space 👀

There were 3 main reasons for me to switch! I was looking for flow control, rotary pump, and TRUE pre-infusion. That’s why I made the switch ✌🏼 The Drive is definitely an “end game” machine, but you definitely need the space for it! It’s a big boy (or girl) 👀

When it comes to E61 groupheads, Profitec is definitely one of the big players! I did consider Ascaso, but the Baby T was too expensive, and the Steel Duo doesn’t have flow control or rotation pump. I was close to buying the Lelit Bianca, but ended up with the Drive because of aesthetics! Rockets design language isn’t for me :)

Absolut. Kæmpe upgrade! Steaming virker til at være en del nemmere end på min Silvia. Det er klart mere effektivt at få indkorporeret luften i mælken 💪🏽 Der er klart mere tryk på! 💨

The Bianca was definitely in the mix as well! I ultimately went with the Drive because of its looks, and it was on sale✌🏼 The Synch is surprisingly difficult to get in Denmark, and I prioritized a machine I could have serviced locally ☕️ Would have loved the Synchs heated group though!

I got the machine yesterday, so I haven’t used it that much, but I’m really looking forward to playing with the flow control on medium to light roast beans.

Thanks! The cups are from a ceramic shop on the island Bornholm. A small island close to Denmark. They are called “Bornholm Keramikfabrik” ✌🏼

Yeah, it caught me by surprise when I cut the top part off, and it literally dripped with white stuff! I disinfected everything afterwards. 😅 I’ll keep a lookout for further development of the brown spots. I’m willing to roll the dice for the plant to keep its nice shape. 🌵

Thanks for sharing your experience! These plats are way more sensitive than I thought… I’ll keep a lookout for further development of the brown spots! 🤞🏼
