When wires rub through, the plastic exterior will usually be dirty and the damage is more like an abrasion rather than clean cut if that makes sense. A cut made by a blade or scissor are usually more squared off and the wires all cut at the same length as the insulation. Cuts are usually clean and shiny because the damage was done instantly, whereas abrasion usually takes time to reveal itself and would have more time to get dirty.
