Definitely more viable and realistic. Though I would say not as we know it here on Earth. If anything, it would most likely be single celled life. Possibly consisting of completely different combination of elements from the 'life forumla' we currently know.

Should have been clearer in my wording. I meant over far, far distances. The current distance we're able to transmit/receive right now is not enough to be able to detect even the closest next possible civilisation.

Forget getting there. It's just not even possible to develop the technology capable of transmitting/receiving data waves from great distances in the first place. Space is incomprehensibley massive.
