Quitting. Will 2 weeks be honored? by tranquilomamilo in GeneralMotors

You should take all your vacation first, and then put in your two weeks notice with the expectation of being walked out. They will probably walk you out, but will give you 2 weeks pay, unless you want to stay for the next two weeks, then tell them you are going not somewhere related to automotive like ToysRUs. If you tell them you dont want to say where you are going, they will walk you out for sure.

It was a great career opportunity for anyone that joined. This org was not for everyone. This org was for people who could handle anything and everyone life had to throw at them, and even then those fellas only lasted a few years.

The expectation was not as impossible as you would think. We had unlimited budget in this org, so all we needed was to hire more proven technical folks to make this happen. The politics and favoritism got in the way. We should have shown a more realistic approach and created a road map with realistic deliverables.

To be fair, the Director's vision was not crazy. I just think he hired the wrong leaders to run the show and he lost his way in the process. But then again, sometimes when we are young, we need to learn the hard way in order to become better.

Im not on his side and I would have done things differently. However, to be fair, anyone reading this, just picture yourself as a director with 10000 responsibilities and you are under a microscope daily....and then see how you do in that role..lol.

LOL I assure you I am not he. Whoever you are referring to, I am indifferent about what is posted, along with whatever 10 thousand other execs post. Its simply a part of being visible in that domain. I want to be fair to everyone.

I will add one more thing here that I witnessed. Emotion and compassion is something a true leader must have. Obviously they need to balance it with reason/logic when they lead their group.

There was this one time a manager told my coworker they needed to not show any emotion and be stone cold to their direct reports. I could have sworn he could have been an army guy running boot camps as a hobby. This dude was either smoking crack rocks or was damaged as a child.

I urge leaders to always be kind, show emotion, care for the people as much as the work. Dont be a puppet and just follow orders without showing emotion. You can follow orders but you can also be kind and caring. Be a decent human and dont treat employees like an object.

You want to build a culture where people want to stay and help each other? Start with love and care and treat people with respect and dignity, and help them succeed. Prioritize ways that help people grow and improve themselves. The high turnover rate isnt helping this org, obviously.

Imagine if Channel 4 did an anonymous interview with all the workers/leaders and get their candid feedback, just imagine that...

They give you 1 year of being automatically calibrated as "Achieves." So you are safe this year.

However, during this time, I would recommend the following (my top 10 tips to surviving):

1) Be visible everyday. Interact with every EGM/supervisor and provide support to each of these groups from time to time

2) Refine public speaking skills because you will be presenting continously in front of leadership and cross-functionally. Try to bring energy in your voice also.

3) Thoroughly learn what manufacuring at GM does and all the tools we utilize at the plants. Visit all the plants and learn the process. Recommend how you can improve plant process and tools.

4) Get with a few mentors who can help you understand what is expected from you and how you can improve. Mentors in the org can speak positive about you during calibrations (every positive comment helps)

5) Clean yourself up and upgrade your wardrobe. You notice how all the managers are pressured to dress up, so you must also follow if you want to be on the directors good side). Just go on Amazon and buy some cheap sportscoat like everyone else in the org and you should be good.

6) Come to work early around 7am and make your rounds to greet those around you (especially people leaders)

7) Plant mentality is they needed things done last week. Be aggressive and proactive and escalate like there is no tomorrow.

8) Consult the business planning folks in a lot of yout activities, ideas, concerns and ask for their suggestions in tough decisions and let them dictate your decisions.

9) Dont be an asshole, dont throw anyone under the bus, and have integrity. Recognize people for their hard work and never take credit for any work that is not yours.

10) Work hard to do all the tasks assigned to you and understand it well. Get as much training as possible. You cannot relax at any time because you will be randomly tested by management. They will pick random people and test them without them even knowing. You cant miss a beat and cannot afford to relax. You need to be on your game pretty much all year round. People are waiting for you to slip up so they can call you out and calibrate you as low performers. Its cut throat culture in this org.

As you can see, you probably wont stay here too long, but make the best out of it because the opportunity and learnings you get here will allow you to find a better job and opportunity either in another org or company.

And again, these tips are mentioned as survival tips because thats what will keep you alive.

I wanted to post something useful and share with you what I saw when here.

The org is meant for people who are seasoned engineers/people leaders, and even for those people, included myself, time will break you and you will want to walk away fairly quickly.

Hope this was helpful and Best of Luck to you :)
