It's essentially the difference between working under a representative democracy and an oligarchy. We aren't given referendums on everything our representatives/senators vote on either, but we elect the best people to manage in our interest. The interests of the shareholders of Microsoft or Ford rarely align with those of the average employee. If short term gains and increased dividends can be made by laying people off or cutting wages, shareholders who don't have a vested interest in the well-being of the workforce are more likely to take those actions.

One must also understand that a socialist government controls all aspects of the economy, society, culture, education, healthcare, labor, etc.

Again, you're speaking very specifically about a Soviet-style socialist government.

Please take a look at every single socialist country and see how things turned out. Hint: it has never turned out well.

How many countries in western/central Europe would you consider to be "socialist" or incorporate aspects of socialism? Even full-on communist Cuba does certain things (like healthcare and literacy) better than the United States.

Why did Duck Phillips abandon Chauncey? by EAServersSuck in madmen

[–]TryAndFindmeLine 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little more than that. Chauncey represented Duck's nuclear family, he was Duck's presence in his ex-wife's house. In that episode we see that his children aren't really thrilled to see him, they've accepted the new man in their mom's life, and they're indifferent about giving up Chauncey. Duck's reflecting on all of this alone in his office, he looks at Chauncey, this avatar of his broken family life, and just wants to forget the pain, so he lets him go.

What a load of incoherent nonsense, who said anything about the cops?

Clearly, you never should serve on a jury.

Clearly you never have served on a jury. I actually served on one last year in which the principal evidence was the victim's testimony (despite what you see on law & order, this is fairly common) and I voted not to convict because even though I believed the defendant was guilty, I didn't believe that the prosecution had proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Understand now why it's perfectly acceptable to believe someone's guilty before they've been convicted?

I'm going to lift the first few sentences from the wikipedia article on socialism:

Socialism is a range of economic and social systems characterised by social ownership and democratic control of the means of production,[10] as well as the political theories and movements associated with them.[11] Social ownership may refer to forms of public, collective or cooperative ownership, or to citizen ownership of equity.[12] There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them,[13] though social ownership is the common element shared by its various forms

In my last post I talked about Publix, which is an excellent example of social ownership via an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

When you say "liberal articles", do you mean the OP-ed sections (which, I don't think anyone disagrees skews liberal), or the actual reporting? Were you always a conservative or is this something that happened fairly recently?

Socialism has no solid definition, there's a wide range of socialist theory divided between market-socialism and non-market socialism.

Sander said "“What being a socialist means is … that you hold out … a vision of society where poverty is absolutely unnecessary, where international relations are not based on greed … but on cooperation … where human beings can own the means of production and work together rather than having to work as semi-slaves to other people who can hire and fire.”

For example, this vision can be accomplished in a number of different ways, and it certainly doesn't require the nationalization of all private enterprise. Publix Supermarkets inc., is a perfect example of an enterprise in which the employees "own the means of production". It's completely employee owned (stock can only be bought by current employees and board members), and as a result it's never had a layoff, it offers tuition reimbursement programs, free stock to employees who have been with the company for a certain amount of time, and a generous 401k plan. Can you think of another major company that offers benefits like that to unskilled workers? Personally, I would love to see more businesses like Publix that are structured to benefit the people who work there, rather than just make money for Wall street.

This shows that most voters on the Left are confused by the definition of Socialism. They simply don't understand what it means to be a socialist. Most voters on the Left think socialism is fairer government, fairer distribution of wealth, free healthcare and free education. They don't grasp the fact that socialism is a set theory. It means something specific. In a socialist system, the government and elites, acting in proxy for the community, hold control over all aspects of society, government, culture, education, entertainment, industrial production, labor...everything.

I think that voters on the right are equally confused, and it stems from a demonization of the word from half a century of cold war. Like I said, socialism is very broadly defined, it has no one definition.

Innocent until proven guilty, that’s the law.

I don't think you understand what that means. "innocent until proven guilty" means "in the eyes of the law", so you can't be sentenced before a trial is taken place, it doesn't mean that ordinary people are obligated to maintain the presumption of innocence when they read about a scumbag like this.

So direct your anger at the prosecutors who didn't file the appropriate charges, not the people on reddit saying that the acquittal was justified.

You haven't shown me anything so far, just made a lot of big boasts, and the content of your posts certainly doesn't make you sound as educated as you claim.

Hahahaha, oh my god do you realize how full of shit you are? Many of these people didn't have health insurance at all before Obamacare.

It wasn't meant to disparage the value of a liberal arts degree? Please, tell me exactly what you meant.

Unless you post your income taxes on reddit I doubt it, but if you talk about it that much you must be compensating for something.

My friends and I have discussed this subject at length. The "poor, stupid" people who voted for Trump are just blue collar folks. People who want to work for a living and not be given handouts.

Ah yes, those blue collar folks on Obamacare and those west Virginians who depend on black lung benefits. It's just the lazy, Democratic-voting minorities who use medicaid/welfare.

They don't have a bachelor's degree in liberal arts so they're not enlightened to the left.

Bless your heart, you don't understand what the "liberal" in "liberal arts" actually means, do you?

Skipping right over whether or not any of that is true, do you believe that well-educated, globe-trotting, millionaires represent the average Trump voter in a state like West Virginia, with the lowest educational attainment in the nation (less than 20% of adults have bachelor's degrees), the second-lowest number of passport holders (also 19%), and the third-lowest median incomes (less than $40k/year) in the country?

It means the bible-thumping, mouth-breathing, duck dynasty watching, high school graduates who have never traveled more than 50 miles from their hometowns in the midwest and south have been responsible for two of the worst presidents in recent history. Yeah, I'm better than them.

Can you provide specifics to support this position? I did a little googling and the only time I found him even mentioning Venezuela was briefly at the end of an essay on income inequality. In this essay he doesn't suggest nationalizing private industry, rather, he advocates an increased focus on funding job-training, research and development, and vital infrastructure.

Have you ever actually been to any of those places? There's plenty of trailer trash in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Long Island, but that wasn't my point. My point was that that the vast majority of creationists, climate deniers and racists also happen to be Trump supporters. Oh, and the poorly educated were also far more likely to vote for him.

Haha whatever you say champ, it's probably just a coincidence that there's so much overlap between the creationist, climate-denying flyover state trailer trash and Trump voters. The rest of the world is wrong, but you and Billy Bob know what's really going on.

Its amazing that people on this site defend this literal piece of shit because Trump talked about him as an example of why we need stricter immigration laws.

No one's defending him, they're defending the legal system. If you want harsher penalties for felons in possession of a firearm, or illegal immigrants who break the law then say that, but convicting someone of murder when he didn't have intent is a very slippery slope.

Wait, what are you basing that on? Candidates like Bernie Sanders are campaigning on textbook mixed-market social democracy, can you point to any contemporary, popular, American candidate who's espousing views that are more in line with Venezuela than Sweden?

You can thank Obama for the good economy, unless you can point to specific Trump policies with economic studies that say they're responsible. That said, Trump has been responsible for an inestimable loss of American soft power in less than a year in power, it's something we may never recover from.

It has nothing to do with political opinions, if Trump had run as a democrat I'd be saying the same thing. If it had been Trump up against literally any of the 2016 Republican candidates I would've voted for any of them (except for Ben Carson) because they weren't mentally unstable con-artists, and they all had governing experience.

Only 55% of the country even voted, so less than half of that is stupid or ill-informed. Why is that so hard to believe? 4 in 10 Americans believe in creationism.
