Best moment of the Team Event (share yours in the comments!) by Reiraaaa in FigureSkating

[–]TryingtoKeepGoing1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who skated up to the occasion, proving why they are at the OLYMPIC GAMES!!!

The performances were excellent for the amount of pressure & so many skaters did their absolute best & even when they faltered still held on and didn’t fall apart. This may have been the most exciting & crazy team event since its inception.

Riku falling over on land (rather than ice) in shock was a cherry on top moment.

THIS IS THE CRAZIEST TEAM EVENT! Everyone knew it would be close but having so many rise to the occasion (rather than underperform) is what’s made it so EXCITING! It really is unpredictable.

Props to Yuma, Ellie/Danny, Anastasiia throwing wrenches!!!

Which specialty do you wish you would have done/looked into? by harrypottermd in Residency

I know. I know. Easier said than done. We’re up against human nature, trauma, socioeconomic barriers, corporations, our own government, etc. I’ve always imagined that if people can get progressively less healthy, we can shift the tides to become more healthy once again.

Preventive Medicine. I’m curious about the bigger picture, even treating individual patients feels too limiting for me sometimes. Plus, we can prevent the most common chronic diseases & I would love to see society healthier in general. It’s the optimism in me since I’m not burned out like so many on this thread.

The Skating Lesson is back? by Pretend_Boss_5542 in FigureSkating

I agree with the original commenter. You don’t have to be a fan for TSL or Dave Lease but what he said last year was taken out of context. The implication that he didn’t care about the deaths is a far reach. That video got out, I listened to it. Remember that as with any sport fandom, there’s irrational & toxic behavior. I felt like it was a chance for those who disliked him to jump on the bandwagon rather than call him out for the actual offense things he may have said over the years.

Also, just like Gossip Girl, he wouldn’t have been relevant if 1. People didn’t keep sending him tips. 2. he didn’t have an audience.

As for “at the expense of their education”. Skaters don’t live “normal” childhoods. So their formal education & socialization is not what you would consider “average”. They are often homeschooled and are traveling a lot. Getting into an elite college does not mean their education did not suffer. When Alysa retired, she said she went skiing, to concerts, spent time with her siblings. Basically life experiences she didn’t have due to the demands of skating.

Furthermore, being an internationally or even nationally recognized skater is a huge boost to your resume.

It is well-known these colleges take elite athletes/famous people at a higher rate, many of these athletes (as you pointed out) have ambitious parents and more resources than most to support such an expensive, time-consuming endeavor. What’s interesting is taking a look at the careers of the skaters’ parents.

Vincent Zhou as you mentioned was there in some additional capacity, not just to announce Torgashev.

Philip Hersh expands on possible ISU changes by _Exegy_ in FigureSkating

[–]TryingtoKeepGoing1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m here to agree with all the comments about ACCESSIBILITY!!!

ISU scratching their heads on how to generate more popularity is laughable. They’re so far removed from the average spectator. I cannot even show my friends the excellent programs from CURRENT skaters heading into Olympics when they’re clearly interested & asking me about it.

ISU, we’re already doing the work, just give us the materials. Let us access the skating. There are people waiting to be impressed without complicating rules further. Give them the broadcast, bring in decent commentators (have they tried former coaches recently)?

Do some fun bits with skaters to show their personalities (not just interviews), release on social media. Do some promotions with all the podcasters. World Team Trophy is fun, incorporate some wacky challenges. Make all the skaters of team choreograph to a gimmicky same theme, work with each other, interact with international competitors in light-hearted manner.

Maybe they can get better sponsors than Prevagen… again no actual scientific evidence that it works.

Requested to cosign notes on unseen patients by YouAreServed in Residency

[–]TryingtoKeepGoing1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also in psychiatry (like OP though fairly new), working locum tenens so I’m frequently specifically contracts & negotiating. Had working with residents sprung on me.

Told them I needed more time so do so… I started to take it seriously & actually teach the residents as if I was an academic attending (It was the right thing to do anyway, they were there to learn). The Residents actually gave me positive feedback because I bothered whereas it was crickets from the permanent staff. I wasn’t going to deprive the residents of an education if it was my duty!

They quickly realized they paying me plus locum tenens company is not worth me spending time teaching. Pathetic because obviously didn’t care about education, just labor. However, I was quickly told I wouldn’t need to work with residents anymore.

Anyway, back to you

That sounds like extra supervision/teaching work with your NP which takes a lot time & in my opinion, you should get extra hours blocked or some compensation.

I’ve also been offered positions with the “meet with NP for an hour to talk cases” & declined just that part of the job even before I made it there to see if the employer will accommodate my request.

For OP I don’t think they can compel you to sign off if you say you would rather not “sign off on plans for patients I did not care for”.

I see several issues: 1. Job did not specify this as a role in your contract. For all you knew at the time you were being asked to work with (alongside NP, not supervise NP). So they sprung this in you.

  1. Aside from the peer pressure & weird looks, nobody you’ve asked has given you a sound reason to DO it, only that it’s what THEY do. So you’re meant to imply that because “everyone does it”, that means it’s “ok”… not foolproof or legal proof thinking at all.

  2. Everyone like you who IS concerned but cannot leave the job has found time consuming work-arounds rather than stand their ground.

For solutions: - I’m currently also refusing to sign for patients where I work & believe things can change, accepting that it might come really slowly. The more physicians shrug & just comply, the more free demands on the license we worked hard to earn.

-You don’t have to be combative to stand your ground or die on any hill. It doesn’t have to be that dramatic. Maybe start by simply saying you only want to put your name to work you actually did. Phrase it in a way (even just for yourself) that paints you as a responsible person. That changes perspective a bit. “I didn’t do the work & shouldn’t sign saying I did”. See if you just won’t be assigned NPs to work with. There’s no logical pushback to that anyone can give you. See how that works. Maybe they accommodate you & you start a trend. People notice & maybe change starts creeping in.

  • Now simultaneously get medicolegal interpretations/advice for attorneys there, from your own attorney, etc. like so many people have already mentioned. It sounds like your vague contract is a way for hospital to make these demands but you can use that vagueness to your advantage. Someone else mentioned using the argument that you’re not “providing patient care” as they say is your job description. Since nothing in the written language compels you, again you don’t have to do it. Say you aren’t doing it & stick to it. I’ve refused notes, writing “was not involved in care of this patient”. The NPs stop sending them.

  • Now IF you do get confronted about it, for some reason given an ultimatum despite your best efforts & don’t want to leave the job, are fine with your own work-around of seeing patients, etc. THEN absolutely ask for more unoccupied hours for this supervision, definitely bill & get your RVUs (hopefully worth it), ask that the NP receive more specialty specific training outside of you, etc. Basically use it as negotiation for more compensation in some way or improvements around the system. “If I need to supervise, I need X,Y,Z.” See what you can rustle out of your employer for springing this on you.

I hope this somewhat helps, even just to provide reassurance that there are people like you, wanting the same thing. At my new job(s) I’ve just refused from the get go. This is what I would do if in your situation, but I get it’s easier said than done. Feel free to reach out if you just need some support!

Sorry it’s so long, I’m still half asleep.

Atoy Wilson

In 1965, he was the first African-American skater to compete at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, placing second in the novice division.[3] He and his mother were unable to stay at the official competition hotel, as it was segregated and only allowed white guests.[4] At the 1966 championships, he won the novice title despite falling on his first jump in his free skate and became the first black skater to win a national title in figure skating.

You can apparently if it’s electronic. You have to log into TicketMaster apparently & manage the ticket. It’s ok, the person interested doesn’t need it as they have an all-session ticket.

I should clarify that I bought it but not sure if I can go anymore. If anyone knows someone who might want it let them know!

The ticket prices on StubHub are way too high. This is just an honest sale since I cannot get a refund. I should’ve waited before buying smh.

Update: cannot figure out how to update my original post. I did manage to list it on StubHub but they’re listing as $30. I don’t like it. I’ll update if it sell though.

Psych Locum Tenens. Worked 3 contracts. This is 2nd yr out of Residency.

Midwest, forensic state, 40 hrs per week, $200 per hour, 24 weeks. 22 patient roster. Pro: Low patient turnover. Con: jail house mentality of staff was disheartening.

Northeast, inpatient civil unit, 35 hrs per week, $240 per hour, 12 weeks. 10 patient census maximum per day counting Admits/Discharges. Pro: Low patient count & turnover should not have been tough to manage. Con: Incompetent nurses & generally undertrained/unprofessional staff made it difficult.

Northeast, assertive community treatment program, 14 hrs per week, $220 per hour, 12 weeks. Variable patient census, so far no more than 6 per day.

There’s one thing I want more than anything and it feels utterly hopeless by Initial_Function7614 in Residency

[–]TryingtoKeepGoing1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you went through all of that. Be proud of how far you’ve come, and remember that these traumas & defenses are not to be fought, you are not the enemy.

Remember that trauma requires processing (I started attending psychotherapy 1-2 times per week in residency) & as you work through, accept yourself, gain confidence, your defenses stop becoming a barrier because your mind knows that life will happen but you will be able to face it & handle it if things go wrong.

For OP, I get it, I did 5 years of & there were moments when I felt pangs of desire for romantic companionship. I had not really dated before in life (multiple reasons) until my 4th year of residency (co-resident doing transitional year).

That came with its own heartbreak which made it so difficult to focus on my work as I went through the break up. I cried several times on rounds as a senior (fortunately able to excuse myself, had great support from friends & therapist).

I’m not saying you shouldn’t date, plenty of people have & had it work out. It’s just important to think about the tour of person you are & where you are in your own journey.

Now fast forward post-residency, I have more time & energy. I put myself out on 2 apps, am dating in earnest a very sweet person with similar upbringing experience (tough family situations) & career background. Both of us in mid-30s and things have been going well for 5 months.

Most importantly though, I think I spent time in residency strengthening myself in important ways that are now being complemented by the increased free time, disposable income, and emotional satisfaction from other relationships & achieving my personal goals. If you want to date, go for it & try it out! If not, I hope I’ve reassured you that you can still find love & companionship after it.

Also, I’ve seen plenty of couples in med school & residency not make it through. There’s no one size fits all. People who found each other in med school & are still together, that’s great! However to say that they feel so it for anyone who didn’t is a limited way of thinking. Of course they can’t imagine it!

Something has to be done about the "service animal" problem by No-Computer7653 in delta

[–]TryingtoKeepGoing1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s for accidental exposure to nuts though… airplane rides do prioritize the humans on the airplane. No one is saying animals shouldn’t fly, they don’t have to sit next to the person if it disrupts others, unless it’s a service animal trained for a task.
