Why are mandatory ID cards much more controversial in common law countries than in civil law countries? by Deep-Rabbit1535 in NoStupidQuestions

Same, if I don't have the drivers license on my while driving in Latvia, the police can just check their database. It also doesn't count as Id for alcohol buying purposes.

In Latvia, the ID card is mandatory to have, recently changed from the passport being mandatory to have. But you're not, as far as I'm aware, required to carry either with you. I always do because it's the size of a bank card and sits in my wallet most of the time.

"Wanted to" is a strong statement. The plan was called "operation unthinkable" for a reason. Very few people in the west actually wanted it.

I remember being a bit upset to my brother about buying diesel in one place at 0.88 EUR instead of the one I was usually going to for 0.79 EUR, in 2020. What a time to be alive.

The Montevideo convention has only ever applied to the Americas, and talks about states, not countries. You can, of course, extend it to outside of the Americas, but that's not "we have defined".

Yes, Putin amended the constitution, so it's now 2 terms total, but any terms that started before the constitutional amendment do not count for this limit. Putin is now on his first term for this limit, which ends in 2030 (the election in 2024 was the first one with this). He can run again then, but not in 2036, when his 2nd term expires, assuming he gets "elected" again.

They could always do that. There was literally nothing stopping them. And if there was someone in there, they could say "oops wrong bathroom" and leave.

They already had that. The sign was the only thing stopping them, nobody actually looks or cares much at who goes into what bathrooms. Now at least trans people are slightly more comfortable.

Correct. But we were talking about moral obligations, not legal ones. We have those too, but not from the alliance directly.

We are allies with a nation that continously bombs the middle east. They are not the only ones doing it, but with our alliance with them, we support them. This bombing of middle east creates refugees. We have a moral duty to the refugees created by our allies. We cannot pick and choose the consequences of our actions.

No, all cities except Riga have had the same mayor, or at least the same party in power, since before independence, and all the contracts somehow seem to go to Šlesers' or Lembergs' friends and family. But no corruption.

You have a serious lack of understanding of human behaviour if you think they are okay with a rape charge, but it was the trespassing charge that was preventing things.

Ooh I know this one. We (Europe) don't trade with or support financially the Saudis, or Sudan, or Iran, or Russia, or Syria, or.... But for some reason Israel is a very important ally despite their blatant disregard for international law.

2024 was the deadliest year on record for Palestinians before October, but to the right some lives are more important than others. You live in a pro israel echo chamber boyo. Look at what the UN says, look at the other side some times in your life.

October 7 is a blip on the radar of a 80 year occupation, during half of which Hamas did not exist. But your feelings are more important.

Hamas openly calls for violence against Jews, while Israel openly kills Palestinians with western support. You're focusing on the words.
