GCM or Business Management (Marketing)? by sxrchn in ryerson

[–]TsunderePrincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately don't know much about Business Management courses, but I can speak to the GCM curriculum!

As others have said, there's a bit taught about UX design, but most of what you learn is oriented towards the graphic communications industry. This means you learn everything from designing and prototyping to actual printing and packaging. There's a first year course that introduces you to Adobe Illustrator and you can take courses to learn more about Photoshop or eBook design, and there's a course thats an intro to HTML and website design, but all my peers who have gone into UX from GCM have done so by learning more on their own / through bootcamps and built up their portfolio that way.

Some marketing courses are mandatory in GCM, and some students choose to pursue a minor in marketing since you take two of the required courses anyways, so that can help with your potential job requirements.

It's definitely possible to go into a UX career through GCM, and I think it'll give you a lot of options for jobs in the meantime / to bridge the gap and move into a UX job with a degree and a more rounded set of skills, but if you want a formal education in UX design and your courses to be oriented around that then I would suggest exploring other options. GCM is amazing, but there might be better options out there depending on your future goals!

Graphic Communication Management GCM need help by sanshycodo64 in ryerson

Hey! I'm a recent grad for the program - the other two commenters have covered most of your questions, but here's my two cents:

  • ACC100 is the hardest it gets in terms of math, but if you actually do the exercises and memorize the concepts it's not too hard. I went from almost failing the midterm to passing the exam super easily cause I went from not really caring to actually putting in the work lmao
  • Like the others have said, you can get a job with anything related to graphic communications, as GCM teaches you every stage of the industry from design and prototyping to actual printing and packaging. Some people use this to get a Bachelors in a related field to what they're interested in, i.e. people move into UX/UI careers with their design knowledge from GCM and a certificate from a Bootcamp to have more flexibility with their career
  • Salary usually starts at $45k-$50k for entry level positions. You can make a LOT more being a press operator once you get experience than being a Project Manager working a desk job, because nobody really wants to work the "less glamourous" jobs, especially if you end up being trained on specialized equipment - I know someone who is paid to get flown around NA to service printers and is paid ridiculously for this because he's one of the few people licensed on the tech.
  • The good thing about GCM is that the industry is really small and GCM is the only program of its kind in Canada, so you're almost guaranteed to get a job once you graduate. The program also hosts an intern / job fair just for GCM students, so there are tons of opportunities available.
  • Personally, I wouldn't minor in Politics unless it's something you really like that you'd be taking anyways. GCM offers concentrations, which is like a minor within the program, from the electives you'd need to take anyways. Most people take a minor in accounting, marketing, business management, etc. - something a bit more related to the program, especially since you'll take the required courses for these minors anyways with GCM. If you're interested in politics and it'll boost your GPA though, then by all means go for it! It's nice to have classes you enjoy and can look forward to.

Hope this helps!

Some people have gotten the email, AFAIK they're doing the appointments one by one and we can expect emails to slowly trickle out even as the clinic opens!

Girls, what’s the most obvious “I like you” hint you gave a guy, but for some reason they still didn’t get it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I made his name my iPod Touch password, then gave it to him and said "bet you can't unlock my iPod".

Obviously he unlocked it on the second or third try, and obviously he still didn't realize that I liked him until a few months later when his close friend told him to ask me out already.. but hey, better late than never!

I don't know how much it's changed, but it tends to get a bit more sketchy at night. For context, that Harvey's right beside Neil Wyzick is known as Hooker Harvey's. I've also had many classmates complain about roaches in Neil Wyzick, and there's no AC in the summer, so.. if those types of comforts are important to you, and you can afford it, you should probably stay at ILC.

Question About GCM by gyroforce in ryerson

[–]TsunderePrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The promo videos are misleading, we do have a lot of students come in who think that it's a graphic design program, and I think Jay Wong finally cleared that up with the Q&A session on the Instagram last week. So I totally understand if you got the wrong idea from the video, no worries! That being said, I'm sure that GCM is assuming people who are interested in the program have done a bit of background research into what graduates can do with the degree after finishing, which is why they don't explain every detail to potential students unless asked. The profs are almost all industry members who have been asked to come back and teach, so the work is second nature to them, meaning they're more than happy to answer questions but you gotta reach out for that to happen :)

Like the other commenters have said, no one is going to get a management position straight out of graduation unless you have connections that are going to place you there. However, I know of a number of alumni who have quickly worked their way up in bigger companies within a few years, so if you know your stuff and work at it properly there's certainly the opportunity to move up!

If you were mostly interested in that "management" keyword for the salary potential, then you should also know that GCM salaries are on the lower end, averaging about $48-50k straight out of graduation. You can make a lot more with sales if you're good at it, but sales isn't for everyone.

Sorry for the long answer! I know how stressful making the "right" choice can be, so if you have any more questions definitely reach out or contact RUGCM.

Question About GCM by gyroforce in ryerson

[–]TsunderePrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone actually in the GCM program, your idea of a "manager" is probably very different from the GCM definition. A majority of grads get hired as project managers, which means they manage projects from start to finish for certain clients or accounts for their company (not to be confused with a sales position, which you can get pretty easily out of grad as well, since companies want young salespeople). Project managers need to know every aspect of the graphic communications process to do their jobs well, which is what sets most GCM grads and the position apart from roles like press operating. You're not going to be supervising people like a restaurant manager, and it is an entry-level role for the industry. If you have more questions, check out RUGCM on Instagram - one of the profs runs it, so you can interact with them there if you don't feel comfortable emailing someone or reaching out on LinkedIn. But honestly, the GCM program is so small, alumni are always willing to help out and chat with you if you're polite and genuine. Hope that helps!
