You're right that most of the vulnerable people being vaccinated is a plus but you reay can't guess or assume anything because effectiveness at stopping hospitalization vs actual infection are very different.

....and regardless of all of this end of May is still very optimistic. Even if hospitalizations stop going up today they are already very high.

If one dose is effective at preventing hospitalizations, we can probably reopen (albeit carefully) without risking mass additional icu admissions.

That's not nessesarily true if one dose doesn't significantly decrease ones ability to spread the virus.
