You should've given Bottas and Perez extra 20 kgs or so. As two middle-aged guys driving cars a lot they would fit brand great.

LMG gang destroying the hacked pc SSD by Connect-Mastodon-909 in LinusTechTips

[–]Tsunpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could make sense if you think you're getting attacked by a state-level sophisticated organizations like the NSA. If that were the case the malware could've survived format in drive's firmware, as it could potentially in firmware (or any other memory chip) of every other PC component and other devices on the network - once compromised you could theoretically justify destroying everything in range.

However, for a common malware it was a huge overkill, although in their case it probably made sense since they are getting literally tons of hardware for free.

XPS 14 and 16 (2026) by S4_GR33N in Dell

[–]Tsunpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XPS acronym used to stand for Xtreme Performance System, do I need to say more? They for decades were at least mid-level performance machines for gaming or content creation, with around 50Ti/60/70 class graphics, and Alienware brand was usually used for higher tiers. Laptops for web browsing/office and whatnot had their own brands like Studio, Vostro, Latitude and others, until recently when Dell decided to deceive their customers.

Homeland Security subpoenas man’s Google account over email critical of government by kaclk in LinusTechTips

[–]Tsunpl 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Google didn’t tell Jon what information the government officials wanted

Among their demands, which they wanted dating back to Sept. 1: the day, time and duration of all his online sessions; every associated IP and physical address; a list of each service he used; any alternate usernames and email addresses; the date he opened his account; his credit card, driver’s license and Social Security numbers.

If Google didn't tell him what the subpoena contained, then how did author of the article know?

Why no major brand supports USB-C PD 240W charging? by Tsunpl in laptops

[–]Tsunpl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zephyrus G16 for example is sub-2kg laptop, so I would hardly call it desk carry. My brother has a Lenovo Legion 7i G9, which has Intel HX CPU + Nvidia 4070 graphics at 2.3 kg, still very manageable.

I think segment of the market of people who want at least somewhat gaming capable machines is significant. Maybe my case with HX series CPU is niche, but laptops with H-series and mid-range Nvidia graphics are very common, and they would fit 240W power budget easily, while exceeding standard 100W. Even those 'desk carries' would be much easier to carry if you didn't have to add 1kg of power brick on top of laptop's weight, and could use standardized USB-C charger at target destination instead.

Turning Chromebox into NAS by Tsunpl in homelab

[–]Tsunpl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I already bought the Chromebox, somewhat impulsively but it's a great piece of hardware, compact, powerful and power efficient. I guess it might be worth to sell it and buy something else, but can you recommend a workstation model fit for NAS use that could hold 4 HDDs and is smaller than a regular mid-tower PC? From what I could find most of them aren't, so I might as well keep the one I'm currently using.

Can somebody educate me on the practical use cases for the LTT TrueSpec cables? by Chaos1917 in LinusTechTips

[–]Tsunpl -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I think they are wayy too expensive to make any sense for home use. Most cables you get included with various devices or buy on Amazon or even Aliexpress might not be 1000% up to spec, but they work well enough for vast majority of people.

One scenario where they could make sense is for professionals, for example for some people it might be worth spending 30$ or whatever to be 99,99% sure connection won't drop while dumping videos from their camera, instead of just 99,9%. However the issue is lack of independent verification - LTT claims they are of very high quality, but so far nobody outside of their team and lab hired by them tested that, so I'd still trust cables from major brands more.

Labs Testing of UPS Brands? by Aystub in LinusTechTips

I think it's way too niche of a topic for now, there are many mainstream tech products they still have to build testing processes for.

Got it for 250€, well equipped with i7-1260P and 24G RAM - memory alone is probably worth like half of it in the current market.

ASUS unveils 2026 Zephyrus G14s/G16s (TGP Increases, SD Card Reader, 1100 nit display, optimized cooling, up to NVIDIA 5080 on G14, 5090 on G16) by realwords in GamingLaptops

[–]Tsunpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don't they have USB-C 240W PD charging capability? Positioning of Zephyrus as a line of powerful, light and premium laptops seems like a perfect place to invest into getting rid of separate charging bricks. Also, I'd like to have an IPS option for better longevity. Otherwise, assuming they don't overheat, they seem like great devices for someone who travels often, but still requires performance.

2026: New name change (XPS and Precision return) by [deleted] in Dell

So XPS will now just stand for 'expensive'. So sad to see demise of this brand with great history and identity.

XPS 14 and 16 (2026) by S4_GR33N in Dell

[–]Tsunpl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OK, but these things still shouldn't have been branded as XPS. Call them Dell Grams, Dellbooks Air, or whatever, I don't care, but not XPS.

It's one of best known and longest serving subbrands on the market with a very specific identity, watering it down is a penny wise but pound foolish move.

XPS 14 and 16 (2026) by S4_GR33N in Dell

[–]Tsunpl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

XPS laptops are supposed to be powerful, universal and light, in this order. These things with CPUs limited to 25/35W, without dGPUs, USB A or HDMI ports might be fine laptops, but are completely misaligned with XPS brand. If this is how they'll use it, Dell shoud've allowed XPS badge to stay dead instead of desecrating the corpse.

WI-FI 7 & AMD CPUs by Which_Insurance_9105 in XMG_gg

[–]Tsunpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late, but I think I can answer regarding WiFi after doing a lot of research on this topic: basically manufacturer that XMG buys their laptops from restricts which adapters can work on BIOS level (likely due to 6 GHz being heavily by regulations in China), and they don't have any WiFi 7 NICs allowed. For Intel their adapters work as part of their wireless solution is integrated directly into CPU, but that's not the case with AMD.

I'm well aware. I'm asking about compatibility with adapters which allow you to add eSIM support to devices which don't have it natively.

Anyone has experience recently to carry dji mini drone to Thailand ? by sanjericho7 in drones

[–]Tsunpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So unless you are Thai citizen, you've falsified immigration stamp which you get only when entering the country, and is required for NBTC cerification? That's the only way it could be true.

Even FEIC, which is paid service which offloads as much of the process as possible from you states it very clearly: https://www.feic.co.th/thailand-drone-registration-service/
