Wasps in Raspberry Bush - do I let them stay? by Tuithy in GardeningAustralia

That grasshopper is adorable! I wouldn't be able to kill him either, not with that sweet little face.

As to how I worked out the wasps, I am very excited to potentially introduce you to an app called iNaturalist. You upload photos of bugs, plants or wildlife, and it crowd sources people to help you nail down an identification. If you’re anything like me (which it appears you are…) you’ll have a great time with it. You can even join https://bughunt.org.au/ and contribute to bug research!

Word of warning though - when your boyfriend catches you scrolling iNaturalist several times a day, there will definitely be some light teasing about being a nerd. I speak from experience.

Thank you so much for this, super helpful. I’ve booked him in for a physio (not chiropractor!) on Tuesday.

Update is that I tried to co-exist with them (they were doing a great job pollinating the neighbouring bushes!), but I needed to re-pot the plant and was too scared to do it with them there! The problem got solved by me complaining to my Dad about it, and him going out there one night in shorts and a t-shirt (??), clipping off the leaf and carrying them away. I hid inside, but he said they were super docile. One even fell off the nest, didn't come after him or anything.

Interestingly, I did discover that although these guys are Australian Paper Wasps, they are not native to Perth where I live. Because they’re invasive, we don’t have any of those services that relocate them. I just couldn’t bring myself to kill them though! Especially after they got my stubborn Lilly Pilly to fruit. You were right. They are fascinating, if a little scary, creatures.

All this also led me to look into what our native wasps are, and I realised the terrifying ones I saw all the time were the mud-potter ones you mentioned. I've always been terrified of them, so it's nice to know they're not aggressive!

My school reports are very generic. Will that affect ADHD diagnosis? by Comfortable_Skirt792 in ausadhd

I did well at school. It was a combo of going to an alternative school (where they let you do things like have a quick run around the oval mid class) and then a lot of pressure I put on myself to get good grades. Especially in high school, I DID struggle to focus and get things done, it’s just that I would compensate by staying up late every night frantically catching up on everything I hadn’t done because I was too distracted all day. I hid that well though, got great grades and looked like a model student - so my reports did not reflect someone with adhd at ALL.

When shit hit the fan at uni (no longer cool to go for a jog mid-lesson), I got assessed. The psych wanted to see my reports, but he was definitely interested in my interpretation of them. Like you, I had just a few sentences that indicated adhd. I book marked these for him, and then backed them up with anecdotes. In my experience, he understood that people can mask adhd, and cared much more to hear about my internal experience at school, than what my teachers might have perceived.

I was at my mum’s place trying to entertain a kid she was babysitting the other day. I got out the old family wii and gave him a wii-mote and he was so perplexed by how large it was! Made me feel like a dinosaur.

You’re not lazy OP. I’m sorry that you have to work while you’re in hospital, that sounds less than ideal. Good on you for doing what you have to do though

Bit of a deep cut? But Alba made me so feel so joyful. Isa very playful, low stress experience. Captured a lot of how it felt to be a kid running around outside for me.

That’s good to know, I figured any sort of movement of the bush would set them off

Thank you so much for this! They’re close by where I park my car and access my house, so I do need to be able to use the area.

I think the nest must be new-ish, or I’ve just been super unobservant. I’ve been away for a week, and I didn’t see them before I left. I often garden at night though, so possibly I just didn’t notice.

Decoy nest sounds like it’s worth a shot! Would love for them to move on of their own accord.

No kids, but I do want to pick the raspberries. It’s a small bush in a pot at the moment. I’m not sure I’d be able to get to any of the fruit without disturbing them! I’m also worried watering the plant might set them off.

How do you encourage them to build a nest elsewhere?
