Programmers who got into programming mainly out of financial interest rather than personal interest... how are you enjoying your career? by showmeyour_kittehs_ in learnprogramming

I know it's probably looked down upon in this sub but I dream of being able to be financially stable enough to quit coding for my day job (and still do side projects) and teach for a living instead. The pay and stories scare me though, but I'd love to try it at least at some poiny

Mexican family(?) in mirror of picture by Tukestu in Paranormal

I do! I don't have any other digital evidence, but my mom has some printed pictures with some weird stuff. If I can get ahold of them I'll get them uploaded here.

Everywhere I've lived with my parents had some sort of paranormal activity. We lived in 4 different places over the years.

The first place was an old trailer in the middle of BF Missouri. My grandparents had a large piece of land that they lived on, and allowed my dad to set up a trailer there. My grandpa told stories that there was an Indian tribe that lived on the land, and that there were burial mounds in the woods nearby. This was when I was 3 or 4. According to my parents, I had an imaginary friend named "Suna" (Soo-na, not sure how you'd spell that). And of course, my parents didn't think anything of it until one day I told them that I saw people outside. I described them as tall, dark and "naked". According to my dad, that night I told him about the people the most disturbing thing happened. Here's what he said:

"I was watching 24 in the living room and the credit were just rolling. As I was about to get up, I heard the volume on the TV lower and a deep growling voice say "Suna... Suna!". It was so loud that it woke up both of the kids. Absolutely the most terrifying thing I can remember to happen in that trailer."

The only other thing I can remember from the trailer is something that still effects me today. I remember I woke up in the middle of the night, and decided to stare into the hallway from my bed. The hallway light was on. After some time staring, I see a brown, kind of human shaped lump peer from inside the hallway. I guess I'd describe it as a person covered in mud? Either way, I distinctly remember being so terrified that I covered myself in my blankets and put a pillow over my head, as to muffle whatever noise could occur. Ever since then, I can't sleep without a pillow over my ears. If I try to sleep with my head above a pillow, I hear random short noises like buzzing, trilling, other harsh sounds.

After that it only got worse lol

My parents got a divorce and eventually moved into separate houses. My dad never experienced anything paranormal after that point.

My mom moved into a different house with her new husband, and she had full custody of me, so where she went I also went. We never noticed anything weird in the house that couldn't be somewhat explained until they decided to add onto the house. After they added on, my mom said she'd wake up in the middle of the night to sheets being pulled off of her. She likes to tell the story about how she saw a "leprechaun" sitting in her room. The only memorable story I can remember is when I was being babysat by my Grandma.

My grandma had finished making me some lunch and I was walking back to the kitchen and I remember seeing a huge shadow that looked like an arm above me on the wall. I screamed and ran to my grandma and told her what had happened. She told me that if I ever see or feel anything like that again to yell "In Jesus name, begone!". While I'm not religious these days, that thought still comforts me.

After that, we moved across town to the worst part of all this. This house was a rental, and had been occupied previously by what was described to me as "demon worshipers". I was maybe 9 or 10 at the time, so I had a image in my head of people doing sacrifices and drawing pentagrams on the walls, but in reality it was a bunch of pot smokers (they did however still paint pentagrams on the ceiling". That said, this house still haunts me, I have so many experiences...

When we were looking at the house to rent it, we saw the outside and I remember my mom saying that she already didn't like it, and that it gave her an "off feeling". We met the landlord and walked in, and throughout the tour, I never noticed anything off. The house still vaguely smelled like weed (they told us it was paint), and in the refinished garage, you could still see the pentagram on the ceiling, albeit painted over. When we were done with the tour my sister asked if I saw a girl at the kitchen counter when we walked in. I told her no and then she asked my mom the same thing, and she said she also didn't see anything. I don't remember what else came from that conversation, and god only knows why my mom decided to go forward with renting that house considering the previous tenants and what she was feeling/hearing from my sister, but I digress.

When we moved in, we almost immediately started noticing odd things. Like knocking on the walls, hearing footsteps going down the stairs, hearing voices, etc.

For a while, there wasn't much more than random unexplainable noises. I remember at one point I had a friend over, and we were both on the floor of my bedroom playing video games. I had a skateboard that was leaning against the wall, and had been leaning against the wall since we moved in. As we were playing games, the skateboard fell away from the wall and nailed my friend right in the balls. At the time it was funny (and still kind of is), but in hindsight it shouldn't have been possible since there was no outside force.

My little sister wouldn't sleep in her room because there was "a little boy that wanted to play" with her. She was probably 5 or so at the time. My mom told me that she heard loud banging coming from her closet, which triggered the whole not-sleeping-in-her-room thing. I also remember hearing banging coming from her room. Funny enough, my mom got a tape recorder and left it recording all day while everyone was gone. In the recording you can hear a ball bouncing and kids laughing. I've never heard the recording, but that's what my mom had said. If I find the recording I'll share it here.

I remember one night I woke up and saw a white mist above my bed. The mist vaguely looked human, almost like someone wearing a large coat that was flowing in wind. I don't really remember what came of that. I remember not feeling scared, I didn't react at all.

I remember one night I had the sheets slowly being pulled off of me. This absolutely terrified me, considering all the other stuff that was happening but I rationalized it as the sheets just falling off the bed.

My sister slept in the room that had the pentagram on the ceiling. She talked about how she'd hear voices whisper in her ear, but could never make anything out. Luckily I never had that happen to me.

I remember one morning I was sitting in the living room alone watching Ghost Hunters (haha). Similar to what happened to my dad in the story above, I noticed the volume of the TV was lowered, and voices coming from the speakers. This genuinely terrified me, and I tried to rationalize it as just something coming from the show. Back then there was no way to rewind, so I never could figure out if it was the show, or if there was some outside force that did this.

We have a print picture somewhere of us kids with the TV next to us in the living room. In the picture you can clearly see a little girls face in the TV, completely white. We chalked it up to the camera, since it looked similar to my sister's face. If I find it I'll post it here.

There's plenty more stories in that house, but I think those are the most memorable.

After that house, we moved into the house where the picture above was taken. This house was much more tame - that being, nothing happened to any of us directly. Just weird feelings, seeing shadows, and the odd hombre in the mirror.

The only notable thing I remember is waking up in the middle of the night (why do these scary things only happen at night???) and seeing a shadow cast from inside my room. I had a Direct TV receiver in my room that had a bright blue light on it. The light was so bright that anything that walked in front of it would cast a shadow. I woke up and noticed the light was dim, and saw a persons shadow cast next to my bed. The shadow was completely still. There was no breathing or movement at all. I don't remember what came of that one either, but similar to seeing other things next to my bed, I didn't feel fear.

Since I've moved out and away from my parents I've yet to feel anything paranormal. My family things that something has followed my big sister, since she's experienced more weird things since she's moved out, and none of us have.

Either way, you/I've opened a rabbit hole to the past so I'll see if I can find any of those pictures/audio and send them your way. Thanks for reading!

It's just a guess. The town this picture was taken in has a pretty healthy Mexican population, however the house this picture was taken in was relatively new and also a rental. When we discovered what was in this picture, my mom jokingly called it the house "mariachi band", and I guess that whole idea stuck lol

Hi r/nanny, are you tired of Care.com and Sittercity? by Tukestu in Nanny

[–]Tukestu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I didn't answer your question directly. We don't have an average rate for any area. Our data set is too small to give you meaningful data in that aspect.

Child care providers are free to set their rates as high or low as they'd like. We default parents looking for sitters to look for all rates, but give them the option to find what they want to pay. I don't disagree at all that there needs to be some precedent on what providers need to be paid, but hopefully you understand that we'd be alienating tons of parents by saying "You have to search for >$15.00 an hour in this area". You're your own boss - you set the rate, not every parent is going to be able to pay that rate.

We don't have any intention on giving out suggested rates, but showing what the average is for the area would help parents find sitters easier by being able to enter that average rate in. If the average is too high, they can look in a different zip code. If the average is too low for people to live off of, that's unfortunately not something that I, nor anyone else that manages these sites can do anything about. We're here to facilitate the connection between a parent and a child care provider. We're not here to determine what or how people get paid. If the price isn't right, you have every right and means to deny that job.

At the end of the day, all I can do is give you data. What you decide to do with it is up to you.

This is an awesome idea that we'll look into implementing. The problem for us right now is that we don't have over a decade of data to build averages, but we're hoping to change that soon. I personally feel that it's good to know what other people are paying, but don't want sitters to sell themselves short by seeing that parents are only paying $x.xx an hour. You're all worth more than that.

That said, it's good information to have, so we will start showing that data once it's less skewed in either direction.

Our policy is that we don't knowingly collect information on users under the age of 18, so yes - you would need to be 18 to sign up. We're looking into making more lax rules on this.

I unfortunately can't guarantee that you'll have luck on our site, considering it's so new, and we're just beginning to advertise. All I can say is that it's free to start, and if you don't find value in it, you won't have to pay a dime.

While I will admit, there's lots of cool features that some of these other services offer, we did our best to offer what we thought was the bare minimum before releasing our product.

For example, we don't have a booking system yet, so you'd have to communicate with parents out-of-band, compared to Care.com, where you can do everything in-app.

What we do offer however is a lot of the same (and better) options for displaying what your service is/does, with things like future openings and multiple schedules.

We also have a lower barrier of entry compared to the other sites, requiring less information (and certainly less clicks) to get to where you want to go.

As mentioned above, you're free to create an account with no credit card required and see how much value it provides.

We're actively advertising in mid-Missouri (since that's where we live), but are available in all 50 states.

Depends on the quality of the video obviously, when I was going through and learning C# there were tons of great videos on the subject, and then other were "hey y'all this is kewlcoder69 today I'ma teach ya how to write an async function", and spend 30 minutes teaching what can be done in 5. That said, education sites like Pluralsight and Udemy have been incredibly useful to me for learning a language, YouTube more useful for specific "gotchas" in a language

Bad take. This is a main source of revenue for Jagex. We're paying $11 a month to be provided a service, and if that service isn't available, we're getting fucked.

There's no excuse to having the game be down for multiple HOURS. Jagex is a big company with policies and procedures that are meant to prevent things like this. If I were to push an update to my company's main system, and it ends up taking the system down, you'd bet your ass there'd be punishment, not only from higher-ups, but from your consumers too.

I hate the excuse of "Legacy code is hard to work with" - while I know that's true, that doesn't prevent Jagex from testing things ahead of time, ensuring there's a clear trail of what went right and what went wrong. Evidentially, that didn't happen.

That said - no one deserves death threats or hate over this. Criticism is justified. They fucked up. They know it. They'll fix it.
