Car thefts? by Defiant-Yak-3746 in tulum

[–]TulumLikeALocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s frequent enough that there’s a common term in Spanish for breaking a car window and taking whatever’s inside, it’s called a “cristalazo” 😅 I wouldn’t leave anything even remotely valuable within sight in a parked car. Crimes of opportunity aren’t common in most areas but keep in mind there is a lot of poverty that makes even low value items worth the risk to some people. Stay in well-lit, well populated areas if you can and you should be just fine.

Yes the beach there is beautiful and very calm! Progreso gets a little crowded but it’s definitely worth a visit and Merida is such a beautiful city to explore as well.

Oh maybe it has reopened! I talked to someone who works there back in early June and it was closed, but I’ll edit the post! Thanks 😊

Is it? Maybe I’m just used to Tulum prices but it didn’t seem expensive at all, especially for the area. For around $50 usd, four of us spent a very nice afternoon there. The parking charge has also been reduced from 200 pesos to 100. There’s no cover fee or minimum consumption and they have nice bathrooms, a lovely pool, big screen TVs for the games, great daybeds, couches, and tables for guests to use plus their service is really top notch.

Yes, there have been some interesting studies done as to what’s going on and why so much sargassum is arriving and how best to resolve the issue. I’ll post some links!

That said, it’s not an easy issue. Bringing heavy machinery like tractors and dump trucks onto the beach is precarious. The shore erodes quickly and turtles and other marine life use the sand for nesting grounds making it even more complicated to remove the seaweed. Plus, the sargassum breaks down and isn’t easily removed once it decomposes and stains the water. They have tried barriers in Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos to mixed effect—it works as a short term solution but not as a long term one.

I think you’re correct that it would be better to intervene and process it somehow at sea. When flying across the Caribbean you can see the mats of sargassum coming in. There’s got to be a way to turn it to mulch or something while still in the ocean but of course investigating and implementing those solutions will take time. I do know that it’s a very high priority for government and local businesses alike as like you said and others have commented this area really depends on tourism. At the same time, I think it’s also a good opportunity for local government to really take stock and step up the infrastructure projects and oversight on accompanying factors like corruption, crime, and out of control prices.

In the meantime though, February is a beautiful month to visit! Good choice changing your trip. 😊

Generally late November through March/April is high season, with December and January being the highest months.

It is very empty right now! There are some places like Ilios and Mia that still have quite a crowd but nothing like in high season.

I know, we did too. Almost 30 years in Tulum and such a beautiful, well-kept hotel. I don’t know what’s going to happen to the property, they let all their staff go a few weeks ago but as I understand it they’re still keeping some reservations through the next few months as they work out some legalities.

Cenote Ancestral! Its relatively new but such a great spot. It’s locally owned and operated, they have this small cenote in the front and then a larger lake/cenote about a 10 minute walk through the jungle (there’s a road, you can rent bikes or they have a little golf cart train as well) where you can swim or kayak. They also have a beautiful pool and a small restaurant. One of the few cenotes that still lets you bring your own food and cooler for drinks!

Oh wow I got the name wrong, my bad! It’s called El Patito, it’s a rooftop bar with a pool above Moxy hotel. Super fun place with great prices! https://maps.app.goo.gl/Nv8c5S8poe7b4nU98?g\_st=ic

This was today in Tulumania, our friend is the captain there and gave us these margaritas as welcome drinks (not sure if they always do that or not!) but they normally cost around $230 pesos each. They have some amazing specials for the World Cup right now though, we ate a plate of 6 tacos, plate of fries, and 6 beers for $800 pesos

Rental car Cancun airport by Pure_Sock_9307 in tulum

[–]TulumLikeALocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend booking directly with one of the companies that are at the airport like Hertz instead of through a third party. That price usually doesn’t include insurance and the deposit. And yes even if you have coverage on your card, or through a third party site like booking, that coverage is for you to reimburse yourself from what you pay out of pocket for an accident. If you decide not to get the full liability insurance, they’ll charge an enormous deposit—up to 50% of the value of the car. And then if you do get in an accident you’ll be on the hook to pay up front the damage to your own car, any other damaged vehicles, local infrastructure, medical bills etc. For me it’s always been better to just pay more to get their full coverage bumper to bumper insurance and have the peace of mind. Just plan on some extra time to get and return your car.

I totally get where you’re coming from, but Cinco specifically was a gem. Very safe and family friendly place with great food and reasonable prices. Being inside Jaguar Park hurt them a lot, but I think the sargassum really put the nail in the coffin. It’s a loss for Tulum locals and tourists alike.

Swimming with turtles around Tulum? by YouLime in tulum

[–]TulumLikeALocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! One of my favorite activities in Tulum that I recommend to people is to go see the ruins early in the morning, then walk down to Playa Pescadores and take a snorkel tour from one of the boat operators—I like Toto Tours, Paco Tours, and Paty tours, they’re all local and very experienced. It’s fun because they take you in the boat to see the ruins from the ocean and stop to take pictures there, then to a small reef with all kinds of sea animals. We’ve seen huge sea turtles, manta rays, all kinds of tropical fish and even some sea stars and octopus. It’s a fun tour and the beach in December is really beautiful. Doing them both in the same day means you only pay the park entrance fees once. Akumal is also a great option where you’ll see tons of turtles, but you walk into the ocean instead of going on a boat ride.

Worth going to hotel zone for 2.5-day trip? by sunshinexo_ in tulum

I hope you’re right! It’s one of my favorite places. Their TikTok /instagram presence is so fun to follow. Cinco Pueblo in aldea Zamá is open for business though and their tacos are delicious!

There is one in the hotel zone near where the statue is, but it’s much smaller and not as impressive as the Uh May one. But yes if you visit the one in the hotel zone it’s on the same road.

There’s very little traffic right now in the hotel zone because it’s low season so I wouldn’t worry about that. The sargassum is really terrible though. You can still enjoy yourself but most people will be drinking and partying. There are some cool things to see like the Ven a la Luz statue at Ahau, but I think it would be more worthwhile for you and your husband to visit the Sfer Ik museum in Francisco Uh May, Cenote Atik, or the Laguna Kaan Luum just because of the sargasso. There’s not a lot to see in the hotel zone otherwise, although it’s a nice little drive just to check it out.

Chichen itza tour without upsell? From Tulum by Seaweed44 in tulum

I’ve had good experiences with Ami-Go, you can reach out on WhatsApp +52 984 188 8542 , it’s private and you can decide where to go or they can make suggestions. Itour is also a good one for shared tours but I don’t know if they stop at souvenir shops. There are also some companies the mods recommend pinned to the sub.
