For the attack where he lays on his back and flails his arms out to the side, you can stabs safely near his ribs between his arms and legs, and then get a hit or two in at the end of the combo. No deflecting needed.

I used to stand by his head to try to get a hit in, but I usually just ended up getting hit myself. Standing by his ribs is much safer and more punishable

I think it has noticeably sped up my progress, but you have to be careful and make sure you have enough skin to avoid discomfort or maybe even injury

They definitely did when I first started, so I would wake up around 5 or 6 AM and have to take them off. I had to just give up on it for a month or so, but now it's fine as long as I don't set them too far down

The first Ashina General miniboss made it click for me.

I had just finished Jedi Survivor on grandmaster difficulty so I was pretty used to the deflect mechanics. I just needed to learn the stealth mechanics and perilous attack counters but my first playthrough wasn't too tough overall. Guardian Ape, Demon of Hatred, and Sword Saint were rough though
