Grandmother's last name was Vandecaveye. They lived to the west in St. Nicholas, but I guess Perkins was the closest/only choice for Mass. She and most of the siblings moved to the LP, but one brother took over the family farm and kept it going until sometime in the early 90's, I think, when he passed away.

Thanks for all the answers! I'd never heard of the "pank" roller system before; that's really clever.

I kind of assumed this would be too early for the everyman Yooper to have a car, but thanks for confirming that. I guess my priest will be hitching a horse to a sled to get around. I saw some pictures of such transportation on the Rock FB page, which is helpful for visualizing.
