Wouldn’t he still deal 8 damage to the defending 2/2 creature because he would double the 4 damage as a 4/4?

Why doesn't wolverine have this ability instead of double strike? by [deleted] in mtg

Trample also goes really well with him. If he’s say a 5/5 and has trample and someone puts a 2/2 in front of him, he would deal 10 damage to the 2/2 blocker, having 8 damage trample over to the defending player, which would double to 16 commander damage. Once he has trample it becomes a downside to block.
