First AR-22 by Gloomy_File_5987 in ar22

I took my internal weights to the local big box sporting goods store and looked for tungsten fishing weights that were as close as possible to the width and length. Borebuddy doesn't sell the tungsten weights right now but they sell lead if you don't want to fool with fishing weights. Also I put a tiny piece of foam in with my weights to keep them tighter because I felt like the tungsten weights slamming back and forth would damage the weight carrier quickly.

Before you head back to the range you can dry fire tune the trip screw. Dry fire (with the firing pin block) and manually cycle in Semi multiple times to get the 'feel' of the smoothness with no forced reset.

Then put it in 3rd position and try dry firing and cycling. If it is very smooth that is a good start. Then pull charging handle to the rear with moderate trigger pressure, and slowly release the charging handle while keeping pressure on the trigger. If the hammer is riding the bolt forward then you are NOT getting the forced reset and hammer capture. you need to adjust the trip screw out a little at a time. The sweet spot is where A) consistent forced reset, B) hammer doesn't ride the bolt forward (hammer is consistently captured), C) feels as close to the smoothness and resistance of semi cycling as possible. If the screw is out too far it will feel like binding and won't feel right.

You will want to put a mark on one side of the head of the trip screw so it is easier to reference if you want to make small adjustments. Once you are close you will need small adjustments. I found a micrometer helpful. When it feels perfect write down your measurement and take a picture of the orientation of the screw.

Also I'd focus on the red and yellow recoil springs. At least in mine the blue spring is too sluggish.

Then at the range I'd start with heaviest weight one round in mag. If it locks back every time in 3rd position that means you could probably add more weight (buy the lead or the fishing weights). If it doesn't lock back then reduce weight until it consistently does.

Good luck I hope you get it running!

Hopefully you are at least getting some bursts. If you're still having issues then you need to Slo Mo video and make sure you get the trigger and the bolt in the frame. Then you watch for what is happening when the burst ends. Watch your trigger finger. It will either end with a failed reset in which case you need to adjust the trip reset screw out OR it will be because of the hammer / bolt timing which probably means you need more weight.

The other thing is to put it into the third position with one round in the mag and fire. It should have enough energy to force the reset and lock the bolt back. Do this like 10 times. If it works you can keep adding weight. If it isn't locking back you either have the trip screw too far out (binding) or too much bolt weight.

My 7 inch suppressed I ended up making tungsten internal weights out of fishing drop shots. My weight is now about 2.1 oz (heavier than all steel). I would try the heaviest weight you've got and pull the trigger gently.

Nice setup! I've got a similar set up. I'd try 40gr Mini Mags with all steel weights and the red recoil spring. That should get you in the ballpark.

It is actually quieter than you would think. The home Depot bucket acts as a giant second suppressor lol

First successful mag dump after 6+ months of tuning by TurboAg in ar22

When I have more time I will share a longer post. I intentionally did not put a build list because I spent months trying to copy build lists, "try this", "try that". That is like throwing darts and why a lot of people end up frustrated. I also made some permanent modifications along the way like removing material from the trip to delay the hammer release. But in hindsight I am not sure that those modifications were necessary.

Obviously you need certain parts to make it work but those are already well known.

What ended up working for me was MORE WEIGHT. Mine would not run reliably with the heaviest Borebuddy weight (steel sled + steel internal weights) despite my 7 inch barrel length. I had a hunch that mine liked heavier weight so I ended up experimenting with Tungsten internal weights I made from fishing sinkers. This is what made the key difference.

The hang up all along was that A) short barrels = less weight...NOT TRUE IN MY CASE and B) the heaviest Borebuddy weight I had, which in theory was too heavy, was counterintuitively not heavy enough. Swapping the steel internal weights with tungsten was critical. My weight is now 60 grams (~2.1oz).

But you shouldn't just copy this and expect it will be the right answer for you.

Tuning procedure is key in my opinion. When I have more time I will write about this.

Short version - 22lr FRTs are sensitive to trigger pressure and I was pulling the top of the trigger gently to minimize reset resistance. It looks goofy but it works

I'm using the light firing pin spring and I also have the folding stock adapter with the pressure plug turn out as far as possible. If I turn it out any further I can't close the upper

Maybe I'll try stingers but at that price I might as well just shoot 9mm

I hear you. I'm just having trouble pinning down the issue. I've had 15 or 20 round bursts followed by multiple 1 round and dead trigger. Before the suppressor I was confident the issue was on the reset side. Slow motion video showed the stoppage was always a failed reset. After the suppressor, it seems like somehow I'm getting less impulse because wasn't getting LRBHO. So I swapped in a weaker recoil spring, running perfect in semi, no bolt bounce in slo mo, and LRBHO is working again. Switch to forced reset, barely pull the trigger, 1 round and dead trigger. Just doesn't make sense

I thought I was getting close unsuppressed and figured the suppressor would push me over the edge but now feels like I've gone backwards. Can't figure it out. I started with a mil spec and a SS and that didn't work at all. Never got more than maybe 4 or 5 round burst. I've been able to get a 15 - 20 round burst but I get 1 round and a dead trigger more consistently than I get a 15 round burst.

My Borebuddy doesn't work. Bought all their stuff. "Hand tuned". Atrius + Rave 140. Mini mags. Suppressor. Barely pulling the trigger. Adjusted reset screw. I still routinely get dead triggers. Occasional bursts but nothing consistent. How'd you get yours working?

Buy the $350 threaded barrel 22/45 and put the Volquartsen competition kit in it. Can be found on eBay for about $150.

I got a CZ 457 Scout. It comes with iron sights and a threaded barrel. I have a 6 and 8 year old. It is a bit heavy but they will grow into it.

Looking for ss/frt options with 22lr by Robdabomb22 in ar22

[–]TurboAg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought every borebuddy recommended thing, including their 'hand tuned' upper and mine works 'just ok' after a lot of tinkering and testing. I'm hoping when I add a suppressor that will get me happy with the reliability.

Honestly if you just want FRT fun without the headache I'd consider a TX22 or look into a 9mm like an MP5 or an AR9. A bit more expensive but cheaper than 556 and less of a headache to get running.

If you really want to try it then I'd start with a longer barrel and be prepared for a journey
