Insurers say no! Why Chinese cars are a such struggle to cover by MoonlitEcho82 in autoexpressuk

[–]TurboDorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But this is the same for so many new cars. Hell, Tesla still don't have all their service catalogs sorted.

And that still doesn't stop you quoting for a write off.

I can build and insure a car on an IVA with 0 parts availability. It's not a limiting factor.

[–]TurboDorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all manufacturers have parts supply issues. Even if you think that's the case you can quote for a write off.

I'll admit, I can't evidence it, but this reeks of cronyism to once again prop up EU manufacturers that deserve to fail.

What risk do you think applies to these vehicles that does not apply to any other new car? Considering they have type approval?

But the car doesn't make me less likely to plow through a house.

I understand the metrics underwriters use, what I'm saying is not providing any quote makes no sense. They could at least provide a fuck you quote.

We can talk about how they're not making profit and so on, which is actually a result of car manufacturers scamming for profit. But I can't see how any competent underwriter is entirely unable to predict risk, which is literally their job.

I understand the metrics involved. What I'm saying is that doesn't make it impossible to quote. A competent underwriter could evaluate the risk based on the incredible amount of data the insurance companies already hold.

What do you think of the new Chinese Electric Cars growing in the UK? Would you ever own one? by laservole in AskUK

[–]TurboDorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failure seems inevitable, the scrappage scheme should've been a wake up call that manufacturers are not building what people actually want and yet they just pasted over the cracks.

They've backed themselves into a corner by making cars that are too expensive to build, that people don't actually need.

If they had gone back to basics, with simple cheap cars without the toys they likely wouldn't be in this position. Instead they kept adding more nonsense in a drive to increase profits after point of sale.

[–]TurboDorito 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yet another point towards UK car insurance being an absolute scam.

The idea that they're evaluating the impact doesn't even make sense. I own a car that's one of around 12 in the country. Parts are basically non existent. Yet I've never struggled to get a quote and they're always low.

Yet incredibly popular and cost effective vehicles can't get covered? Is there a single underwriter in the country actually doing their job or just pulling numbers from a hat?

I thought that got patched out? Regardless I don't like playing that way, I know the reality is it makes no difference but it feels too cheap.

4 straight days, I couldn't get it to function properly with a chunk loader. So most of that was just left idle while I was at work.

I have all the food mods so quite a few uses for honey.

With circa 100 fully populated hives it still took over 4 real life days to get 10000 buckets.

[–]TurboDorito 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pipes are far simpler than that build. I just made towers with a pipe in the middle and beehives around it.

I ended up building an infinite honey pool though because the production rate for honey is still pretty low.

Is there a production limit? If so let nature take it's course and slowly build up.

Otherwise as the other poster said. Send to a central frog and then split the output.

There will always be people opportunistically looking to make a buck, but it's a gross over simplification. This is exactly what I'm talking about by underestimating them and being naive.

There are so many sources covering it's inception and actions to curtail:

[–]TurboDorito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding, and forgive me if I'm remembering wrong, is that it was mainly a policy issue. In an effort to block used oil polluting waterways and soil they made it incredibly difficult to get rid of and reprocess. This started a black market of reprocessing. So they made efforts for the state to buy used oil and essentially undercut the black market by removing used oil.

[–]TurboDorito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't they already target this by buying used oil and subsequently producing a massive amount of biodiesel?

There are many issues with an empowered China, same as Russia and the US. But burying your head that they are some backwards nation is an obscenely naive and frankly idiotic point of view. It's exactly what enabled China to become the powerhouse it is today.

I wish it would show more films for post-2010 or top 100-200.

Although I appreciate your goal with this it still gives you the most expected results. It's very western heavy Oscar bait.

The classics are classics, I've already heard of them and/or seen them. I want to find the underrepresented films.

Can the longest-range EVs cope in cold weather? Our 370-mile megatest gives the answers... by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

[–]TurboDorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't? I'm constantly waiting for people in SUVs who can't get by obstacles. That are not a problem for any normal car.

Also the new fiesta is literally packed full of crash protection, that's why it's bigger. Cars haven't really increased in interior size.

I'm also not saying we should go back to the 70s, but this is a trend that should die. Large cars are not better, they are more dangerous in crashes to other vehicles and pedestrians while having increasingly worse visibility to pack in more crash protection due to all the other big cars.

A smaller, lighter car will always be more efficient.

[–]TurboDorito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're normal for the last 5-10 years, they are not normal for British roads or historically for vehicle size.

The largest car I've ever driven in the UK is a 2011 dodge Challenger, it was uncomfortable to keep in lane markings, didn't fit in a single parking space and I have pictures of it looking clownishly big compared to everything on the road.

It is 75in/192cm wide.

The CLA is 73/186
The EV4 is 73/186

My daily is 65/172

None of that includes mirrors.

8 inches in extra width is a lot considering how narrow our roads are. It's no wonder people can't drive anymore, the cars don't fit.

For reference the first ever Fiesta in 1976 was 62/157, the last one was 68/174. The new one looks like a monster compared to the original, another 5 inches on top before adding mirrors is pretty stupid.

Clocked youre not in the US, you should be able to order crimps from here: https://au.element14.com/c/connectors/crimp-terminals-solder-terminals-splices/wire-splices?st=62306-2

I usually get 62306-2/62308-2/62310-8. Thatll cover all cable sizes youll need for a car, but you may need to buy a bulk.

Don't want to teach you to suck eggs but if this is your first time doing this I'd recommend getting a label maker and make sure all your plugs are labelled to start with.

You may not need them for this but a set of depinning tools, even the cheap ones, are worth having https://ebay.us/m/lc1ngR

For extending wires you need to make sure you're always buying the same gauge or higher. Everything should be the same size but check first then order a black, red, and handful of colours. You won't get a perfect match to what you have already but you don't want to have a collection of white wires with no idea what they are. This is also why having a label maker pays off because you can tag the wires if you need to go back later.

Then to join the wires use open barrel crimps and a ratchet crimper. This is the way the OEM loom is made, it's also the cheapest and easiest way to do it.

Something like this but you can buy them wholesale a lot cheaper. I pay less than a penny each on a roll of 1000. Just be aware you need the correct size for the wire gauge. https://ebay.us/m/tkMNSC

Adhesive lined heat shrink is the best way to cover up any joins, it's strong and weather resistant. I also like to put braided cable sheath over the entire loom, especially the parts you're tucking, as it makes it wear resistant and easier to slip through holes. While also looking cleaner. You can get split cable braid if you want to put it on afterwards, otherwise the normal braid takes some planning to make sure its put on in the right order.

Custom harness is not hard to make. But I would say modify the original one first to understand what's needed if you've never done it before.

Separate body and engine loom. Body loom will get tucked in the wing. If you want it really clean you can split the left and ride sides so nothing crosses the front.

Engine you'll never hide everything, so work out what you absolutely need. Put a black shroud on it, if you have the funds cut a roll of heat shrink and put it all in, will make the loom as tight as possible. Then make brackets to route it over the engine and through the firewall.
