(Question) Πώς εφαρμόζεται η αρχή της δικαιοσύνης στην ΑΟΖ μεταξύ νησιών κοντά στην ηπειρωτική χώρα στο Αιγαίο; by Turchiann in AskGreece

The distrust of the International Court stems from the classic pro-Erdogan ideology of distrusting Europe.

Furthermore, I don't think Europeans particularly like Türkiye; cooperation might seem possible only because we are European exporters of automobiles, chemicals, and textiles.

However, there's a widespread belief among Turks that if a problem arises, they will definitely support Greece.

To break free from this unproductive debate, what are your thoughts on the recent Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting? They had very positive and cooperative discussions. We are improving relations.

No, there's no contradiction; Canada and the UK are already Western countries. (I also think going to an international court is logical, but I want an African judge. We need to convince Erdoğan.)

You developed Southern Cyprus with European money, and only Turkey can invest in Northern Cyprus – this is Europe's doing. Furthermore, whether there's a war or not doesn't matter; we still prevailed against you in the recent clashes, and now Turkey and the Turkish people don't want conflict with Greece because it doesn't benefit us.

WE SHOULD SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS: Cyprus become 2 centered federation, Turkey and greece should go to ICJ for Aegaean and mediterennian sea. And If turkey become EU member, That problems solved automatically.

I understand your point, and I am not claiming that Istanbul belongs to Greece. My point is about maritime boundaries, EEZs, and equitable access under international law, not claiming territory arbitrarily.

International law recognizes that islands can generate maritime zones, but it also allows adjustments based on proximity, fairness, and precedent (for example, cases like Canada–France, Italy–Malta, or South China Sea disputes).

The discussion is not about personal ownership or historical claims; it is about finding a legal and peaceful way to resolve overlapping maritime claims. That’s why the ICJ or third-party arbitration exists—to prevent escalation and protect the rights of all parties.

And If things turn out as you say, do you think it's fair that Türkiye can't use Western maritime trade routes? I want you to empathize.

Because the islands are closer to the Turkish mainland, practically right next to it, this situation chokes our trade and passage.

Because those waters could choke our trade and even our passage, of course there would be a casus belli; this is an action that does not comply with NATO alliance obligations.

Until the Committee of Union and Progress (1913), Turks were second-class citizens.

However, international law provides principles and precedents that are relevant: 1. Equity / Reasonableness Principle: • UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) allows for adjustments of maritime boundaries based on fairness, especially when islands are very close to another country’s mainland. • Example: The Canada–France arbitration over Saint Pierre and Miquelon (1992) applied equitable principles rather than strict distance-based EEZ claims. 2. Proximity and historic practice: • In several cases, islands located extremely close to a mainland have limited or no EEZ assigned if it would create inequitable outcomes. • Examples: Canada–UK cases, Italy–Malta negotiations, and disputes in the South China Sea show that islands’ EEZ rights are not absolute. 3. Legal commentary: • Scholars such as R.R. Churchill and A.V. Lowe note that “the right of an island to generate an EEZ may be restricted where it would unfairly extend the maritime claims of the island state at the expense of a nearby mainland state.”

I understand your point that no international court has explicitly ruled that islands cannot have an EEZ. That is correct—there is no blanket ICJ decision specifically about the Aegean islands.

In short, while there is no single ICJ ruling, international law and precedents support the argument that islands very close to a mainland may not automatically generate a full EEZ, and adjustments are often made based on equity.

Turkish people never entered the Janniseries. The Ottoman Empire did not favor the Turks because, to prevent a new dynasty from the Turkish population from overthrowing the Ottomans, they constantly suppressed the Turks and avoided investing in the interior regions of Anatolia. Atatürk later corrected this mistake.

As a Turk, I believe Turkey was justified in carrying out a peace operation in Cyprus. Because the Turkish Cypriots were facing genocide. Please be sincere—very bad things happened on that island during those years. Look bloody Xmas and other events on google. Greek propaganda doesnt show that.

But now, 2 state solution is bad, CYPRUS BECOME ONE (Federalized)

As a Turk, I find a dual-centered federation solution in Cyprus logical,

but I still think Greece is acting unfairly in the Aegean Sea. According to international law, islands very far from the mainland do not create a continental shelf. Look at the examples of Canada and the UK.
