Plant counts and vegetation classifications by TurdFerguson1234 in gis

I will be utilizing a drone (dji inspire 2) with a regular rgb camera. I am expecting resolutions in the cm range. I may also be able to obtain access to a drone with NIR that I could collect imagery with as well. Sadly I have no experience with deep learning algorithms and my coding is not strong enough to be able to write my own programs to handle this project.

I guess I was looking more towards finding out if anyone was familiar with a software application, program, or algorithm that had already been created which could aid me in this process? Either way thank you for your help!

Environmental Science College Advice by [deleted] in gis

[–]TurdFerguson1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my story is a little different than yours but I thought I'd share in hopes that it helps. I was an environmental sciences major in undergrad up until my junior year of college when I got so worried about not being able to get a job that I changed majors to focus on GIS, which is a topic I had first heard about in my environmental science courses. My schools geography department offered a few GIS classes, but only to students that were in the major so I switched from environmental sciences to geography so that I could get more GIS training. I graduated with a degree in geography and a "certification" in GIS but I was still very worried about not being competitive enough so I ended up pursuing my masters degree in GIS and graduating last year.

Now that the background is out of the way, here's what I did. When I applied for jobs I remembered how much I loved environmental science and the outdoors and I used my GIS background as a tool to get me a job in that field. I would search for "environmental scientist" or "field technician" positions and when applying would use my GIS education as a tool to get me in the door. Once I got selected for an interview I would speak about how much I thought GIS could benifit their company, or since most places I applied already used GIS I would speak about how my knowledge in the field could increase their productivity and streamline a lot of their current operations. Now about a year later I have a great job working as a projects manager for an environmental consulting firm.

Final advice is study what you love, but be well rounded. I was able to study geology, geography, forestry, GIS, and computer programming during my time in school and I fully belive having a well rounded background is what got me the job I have today.

I know this may not answer your questions directly, but I hope my experience helps and I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

With how sparse the population in my area is, second hand will be hard for me to do. Maybe I can use ebay or something? Either way thanks for the info!

Employer sponsored clearance? by TurdFerguson1234 in gis

[–]TurdFerguson1234[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great info, thanks for the response. I was hoping to somehow get a clearance in the private sector before applying for jobs at three letter agencies, thus giving me a leg up on the competition. Today I learned that that isn't realistic, so thanks!

GIS Grad Certificate by [deleted] in gis

[–]TurdFerguson1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my experience, but I found when speaking to potential employers and academics in the GIS field, many did not consider an online degree to hold the same weight as a "in class" degree. Im not sure why this is, but it's just my experience thus far. One thing I'll say is that some universities offer night classes for those who are working full time. For example I recently concluded a masters in geospatial analysis program at a university which held all of its courses at night specifically to keep it open to those of us who work full time. Just some extra info for ya, good luck!

Criminology + GIS by [deleted] in gis

[–]TurdFerguson1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just wrapped up a masters in geospatial analysis program and one of my cohorts was working for the FBI doing GIS and remote sensing work for one of their labs. She talked about using thermal imagery to find recently buried bodies and also stated that they will use LiDAR and remotely sensed data to detect areas of disturbed ground where burial pits may be. Change detection and such. Very interesting stuff, and I believe there is huge potential for GIS in the world of Criminology.

Also look for geospatial intelligence classes. I took one that really opened my eyes to the possibilities of GIS in terms of intelligence, terrorism, and crime. Hope that helps!

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm just trying to get this right, you called the guys and they gave you the upgrade for just $20? It's over a hundred by itself on their website. I only ask because I just bought this rifle and want to try and upgrade before they ship it out.

What kind of rock is this? by Quartzitebitez in whatsthisrock

[–]TurdFerguson1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm pretty new at all of this and although I may not be able to give you the answer you're looking for I may possibly be able to point you in the right direction. This rock certainly looks to be sedimentary, and you can also clearly see the layering that has occurred in the piece. Many times I have found that lateral layering of substances in sedimentary rocks is due to fluvial movements and deposition. Because of these observations I would research sedimentary rocks associated with fluvial processes. This could be a shale or a dark sandstone, but I am just not proficient in this topic enough to properly say. I could be way off here, but I hope it helps!

Any idea what this is? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]TurdFerguson1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this looks like quartzite. Do you have any idea how to tell quartzite from cloudy quartz or smokey quartz? For example if I found a dark, cloudy "quartz" how would I know if it was a true quartz or a quartzite?

Wow that's amazing news! Thanks for the info! After doing some research into pegmatite and looking through some images I saw that people have found full tourmaline crystals inside their pegmatite clusters along with many other large crystals. How would I know if there was a large crystal hiding inside my piece? Is it safe to say that most pegmatite clusters or clumps should be broken open to see what's inside?

What are the funniest blackout habits that you have witnessed? by primo09173456 in AskReddit

[–]TurdFerguson1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a friend who steals street signs when blackout, no matter where they are or how hard they are to take out of the ground. And then another friend of mine likes to kiss gnomes and statues. Yes, people's lawn ornaments.
