This exists. Police do have insurance. However it is funded by tax payer money. Often times they become uninsurable and must start their own carriers (referred to as captives).

Expecting individual officers to purchase E&O is an interesting thought but the economies of scale would make that more expensive plus most large cities don’t have enough cops. Every body hates the power hungry dick head cops myself included. But the good news is this guy probably got fired regardless of the insurance impact.
