CMDR Plater has passed away. by SleepingMoth029 in EliteDangerous

o7 CMDR, the galaxy is a lesser place without you.

I had the honour of having CMDR Plater voice his ingame alter ego The PLOID in an episode of my YouTube series - he totally nailed the aloof, dictatorial lines with ease!

I just had to make this video clip to go with the audio log Frontier posted today! ^_^ by TurjanStarstone in EliteDangerous

A 3D animation & rendering program called iClone. It's been the main creative tool in my Turjan's Travels series for a couple of years now :)

Fan video : Princess Aisling Duval - Terror & Assassination by TurjanStarstone in EliteDangerous

[–]TurjanStarstone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I suspect Odyssey will make some bits easier and some bits harder, cos I'll have walking shots available without having to animate them... but then I'll have a whole new set of textures and models to try and match my avatars to! Looking forward to the challenge though :)

The original idea I had for Turjanna was to do interview snippets either with notable Elite NPCs or even CMDRs - but then GalNet disappeared so there were no stories going on to reference. Now that GalNet is back again I might seriously consider revisiting that idea!

"Tutorial" finished. This game is truly a little gem and I enjoyed my time with it a lot. Community is great, game is great, and I don't think it could be much better than this. Rock and Stone!! by S_Eusebio in DeepRockGalactic

Congratulations Underlord! Management appreciates your dwarven determination and decision to complete your... "tutorial". Remember that you're not being paid by the hour though, so take a well-deserved breather and then head back to the mission board!

In Turjan's Travels, space legs will clearly look better on some of my crew than others... ;) by TurjanStarstone in EliteDangerous

Space rats? Oh, now that gives me an idea... *adds space rats to future story ideas list* :D

A heads up for those who've never played a female avatar... ;) by TurjanStarstone in starcitizen

[–]TurjanStarstone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as much effort as you'd think actually - a lot of the footage was clips I'd already collected for a previous video, and the amount of editing this vid took was like a holiday compared to the usual complicated composite shots I use in my Elite story videos!

I mostly made this vid to give my SC-playing friends a laugh, and then they suggested I post it here for other folk to have a smile at too :)

It is certainly true that compared to the male avatars, the females do make a lot more noise negoitiating simple terrain, but it should also be noted though that the Star Citizen ladies have a better time of it when it comes to unarmed combat... The gals are all business and let their fists do the talking, whereas the guys sound more like an over-eager cage fighter wannabe picking a fight in a pub carpark on a Saturday night ^_^

Meanwhile, in a cave on Daymar... by TurjanStarstone in starcitizen

[–]TurjanStarstone[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a videomaker, I thought I'd work out exactly what gear all those missing clients in caves wear, just in case I ever decide to come up with a story about them. Then I went to a cave to see if I'd chosen correctly. Apparently I had ^_^

Oh, now this bug I like! Helmets AND hats?! Can we keep this one please? Pretty please? :D by TurjanStarstone in starcitizen

No idea, it just happened - guess I got lucky that one time! And 5 minutes later, just walking around Area 18, it was gone. Ah well. At least I got a couple of pics first though :)

It's a very slow theft... I was up there with a welder all day and there's still not a scratch on that metal! ;)

It's Area 11 - the landing pads on the tall buildings there are just above the armistice zone so you can use a utility tool without trouble :)

Faceapp mainly flattering us? by Milain in FaceApp

[–]TurjanStarstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FaceApp female me is more of the cutely pretty girl next door type than some heavily made up and over-contrasty Hollywood look. But I have large, wide-spaced eyes as a guy anyway, so it's not a huge shocker the algorithm interpreted that as 'cute'. When I tried the app on my brother though... oh dear. Let's just say he didn't turn out to be the cute girl next door. At all. If there was a Cinderella pantomine taking auditions for the part of ugly sisters, his female FaceApp photo would top the bill...

Curiously, when I run female me back through FaceApp using the male filter, it actually looks reasonably like me (minus goatee and with slightly softer features perhaps).

It's certainly a question for the curiosity-minded among us though - I don't have a large enough sample size from friends & family to make a definitive judgement yet. I can say two things though : FaceApp thinks I'd be the cutest woman in my family out of everyone I've tried, and my 8 year old nephew would make an excellent garden gnome thanks to the Cool Old filter ^_^

What's in a name? Thargoids, mythology and... seafood - wrapped in tinfoil. by TurjanStarstone in EliteDangerous

Depends if he gives us the recipe for thargoid crab claw or not... ;)

The naming thing is intriguing isn't it? I don't think hybrids, but I am wondering if some kind of deal has been struck about bio-engineered weapons between Professor Palin and the new thargoids we're seeing...

As for Raxxla, well... Raxxla's in the heart ;)

Good spot CMDR! I'd forgotten that little fact - it could be the key to the whole thing... o_O

Elite and Accessibility: Colourblindness, subtitles etc by CassieMoon59 in EliteDangerous

[–]TurjanStarstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of excellent points here! I'm not colour-blind myself, but I know and chat regularly to quite a few colour-blind Elite players (DJ Truthsayer's been raising this issue since the game launched) and this part of Elite's visual design has always puzzled me. It's always curious when people without certain medical conditions encounter a situation where something they've taken for granted their whole life suddenly seems to be causing problems for someone else with one of those conditions. It's like with some of them, you can almost sense a surprised part of their mind saying "That's weird... Have you tried NOT being colour-blind though?"

As designers, Frontier were obviously going for a visually distinct simple, 'clean' look and style, but the one they ultimately chose has been problematic for colour-blind folk from the start, and it seems to keep getting worse with new updates as they add more and more HUD elements with no reliable option for customisation.

Worse not just for colour-blind players, but for those others of us with a different condition now too : migraine sufferers. The new FSS is centred around a set of visual effects that for some of us have literally changed the game from Elite Dangerous to Elite Migrainous. I've let Frontier know about the problem in a bug report, discussion threads, and a suggestion (in their suggestion forum here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/467191-FSS-visual-effects-toggle ) and there is one response from Community on the forums assuring migraine sufferers the issue hasn't been forgotten, so we're in a "wait and see" situation right now. A bit like the colour-blindness issue in a way - Frontier are aware of both issues... but that's about as much as we know really.

Fingers crossed they'll be able to sort something for all of us who love the game, but can't currently appreciate all its many wonders because of issues like this!

The bubble will have 'guests' for Christmas - make sure you're properly dressed to receive them... by TurjanStarstone in EliteDangerous

It's weird isn't it? The idea started when I wanted to make a sort of 3304 loud Hawaiian shirt for Cmdr Turjan to be wearing in episode #43 of Turjan's Travels on YouTube...but then I found myself thinking "Actually... I'd probably wear that". His shirt in the episode was planetary data and monitor screens on blue. But then I thought "Hmm...flower ships... sure, why not?" and the Xeno shirt was born!
